It’s probably not illegal for a media outlet to pay a ransom.
But what do you do the next kidnapping? How do you explain to their family why you’re not doing it for them?
Would it encourage potential kidnappers to go ahead with it because they figure the media outlet will pay it?
A bad precedent I think.
Stuff like this goes on with companies and reporters more often than most know--cause it's behind the scenes.

Ransom insurance is a thing w. these companies especially those that operate in foreign countries (600 kidnapping of US citizens in Mexico over the years).

The difference here is it's a high profile US case that's being played out in the public
(and that's what the "kidnappers" chose to do). If the goal was money and the kidnappers were sophisticated this would not go to the media and be quick and smooth, and already handled quietly.

They are being very intentional not to really use the word "cleared" in regards to anyone really. In many cases when there are no suspects at all, they will list off like a list of folks they have cleared. Im just not hearing that language. Its like they are avoiding it, which is distinct.

But the media announced the Rio Rico guy and the man in the backpack video were supposedly cleared (and quickly). It could be an FBI vs. local LE thing, but I swear we've heard about those two being explicitly cleared in the last few days

I thought the sheriff said he wouldn’t be giving any more interviews?
If only.. This sheriff talks too much. When he gives an interview of 15 mins answering questions about the case he could easily answer the same questions in 5 mins - JMO

Can some one post scanner link here?

Many tradesmen use them - even those who make jewelry. Interesting, no? I have never known anything like that exsisted. Still, anyone at a store may have seen and thought it was a good idea for their evil doing.
It doesn't necessarily have to be some specialized mouth-operated flashlight. Many lights today are small and can just be lit and popped into the mouth and held there like a cigar for hands-free illumination. Here's a Walmart one for less than $2.00

I missed the context of this, the original post is making a connection between jewelry making, bite light, and someone in NG's family?
I honestly doubt if there is a connection. Just saying I never heard of a bite light until now.

nnie Guthrie Jewelry Designs bite lights are often used by jewelers.

Of particular note:

DNA other than Nancy Guthrie’s and those in close contact to her has been collected from the property.

The latest from PCSD on the Guthrie case:

"Good afternoon, media partners -
Investigation: The Pima County Sheriff’s Department and the FBI continue to work jointly on this case. Our strong partnership is critical, and we remain fully committed to this collaborative investigation. To ensure consistency and streamline testing, evidence requiring forensic analysis is being sent to the same out-of-state lab that has been utilized since the beginning of this case. This decision was discussed with and agreed upon by local FBI leadership.

Evidence: Several gloves have been located during the investigation. The closest gloves were found approximately two miles from the home. Reports that a glove was found inside the residence or on the property are inaccurate. All collected evidence has been submitted for laboratory analysis. DNA other than Nancy Guthrie’s and those in close contact to her has been collected from the property. Investigators are working to identify who it belongs to. We are not disclosing where that DNA was located.

Leads: Investigators continue to follow up on all leads. The suspect description released by the FBI this week remains a key focus; however, investigators are not ruling out any individuals or possibilities. No suspect vehicles have been identified. We ask the public to continue submitting actionable tips. All submitted videos are being reviewed.

Video Requests: PCSD will send an additional message to surveillance camera users in the Guthrie neighborhood via the Neighbors App this afternoon. Investigators are requesting video from January 1, 2026, through February 2, 2026, including any suspicious activity involving people or vehicles.

Pool Service: At the request of the Guthrie family, routine pool maintenance was conducted at the residence today.

Media Briefings: There are currently no press briefings scheduled. The sheriff has granted a limited number of one-on-one interviews today and will not schedule additional interviews through the weekend.
We understand media interest is high; however, due to time constraints, not all requests can be accommodated. We encourage outlets to coordinate with their local affiliates when possible."

If there's no match from persons of interest or in CODIS(assuming it's the DNA of the kidnapper) they could always use genetic genealogy, but of course that takes much longer.

  • #27,152
Fingers crossed they have a match on dna now and command center vehicle is headed towards that dna source. 🤞
To dispatch the Mobile Command Unit, LE likely either has a match on DNA or a suspect that has checked a lot of boxes (DNA, cell phone, vehicle, a tip or multiple tips about a person etc). MO

I see the connection you're trying to make, but I'm struggling to understand why anyone would need a bite light when making jewelry. Is this a known thing, or just rumor? It seems like making jewelry is a task best done whilst sitting at a desk with a strong light and magnifying lens, like one might use when soldering electronics.

Agreed. I know hundreds of home based crafts people due to managing markets for years. They all use jeweler's lights. There is literally no reason to sit for hours upon hours biting a mouth light. JMO

Hi. Newbie here. Please be gentle. This site is fascinating and have been following here, news etc. Background in Admin law and behavioral clinician.

Separate from the horrific crime that occurred - the information/facts publicly available seems to point to several possibilities and observations and questions (most my summations and opinions):

1. This does not appear to be a robbery or robbery gone wrong (or for primary sexual assault purposes b/c Lantana guy (gait appears more stocky male) seemed behaviorally methodical, even paced, low energy although I keep it as a low probability option). There’s also been no report/discussion of valuables taken or wording to robbery AND kidnapping from reliable sources.

2. If that is true then the other probable options for this kidnapping are:

it’s primarily a kidnapping for ransom or a kidnapping to cover intended murder.

3. If kidnapping for ransom the ransom note sent 2x for money to be deposited in bitcoin wallet came and went with no seeming proof of life. It does seem possible the 2nd note sent may have eluded to her no longer being alive. Listen to language from SG’s presser “return our mother to us…so we can celebrate with her” etc.

4. If that’s true and no proof of life then they either had no intention of showing proof of life and it is staged to cover intended murder and the bitcoin acct is not what they’re counting on OR she died during/shortly after kidnapping and it was intended for ransom. But if intended for ransom there have been no more messages to leave body for ransom. If true than more likely a cover for murder. Why would they not continue to seek ransom if family wants body and if ransom was primary goal)?

5. If cover for murder then who benefits?

Probably not SG. Well off. Then we have brother from VT or AG and SIL (I put them together b/c my feeling is if 1 is involved then both are involved due to living together and presuming 1 would know if 1 was absent for up to 1 hour middle of that night).

Kidnappings without body has to wait 5 years before closing case and disbursing estate funds according to earlier post on AZ law. But if body is found (in desert decomposed etc) estate can be settled and funds disbursed thereafter.

Open to thoughts.

Don’t people usually (always?) get detained, questioned, or arrested, before being cleared? I might be completely wrong but I can’t think off the top of my head of any time I’ve heard of someone being “cleared” pre-emptively without them having first been taken in for questioning/made a POI or something along those lines, where the wording is usually something like “detained for questioning but later cleared of wrongdoing”, “questioned as a person of interest but later cleared”, words to that effect.

JMO
You can be cleared without being arrested if you have an airtight alibi proving you couldnt have been there.

IIRC that happened for JonBenet's older siblings.

I agree...and a potential reason why there's no huge payout is because the kidnappers don't have the ability to provide proof of life (read into that however you wish).

I don't think SG has anything to lose by paying the new information request. They have the author's email address so she could respond with "I'll pay you $20,000 now, another $80,000 when the kidnapper is charged and a further $500,000 if Nancy returns alive"
Is it possible there were three involved and this person doesn’t know where they took Nancy? He just knows he was part of the crime and who the main person is? If that is the case, he cannot provide proof of life and the planner may have made a pact with the others not to speak or contact one another until money was received and things had settled down. I understand the FBI’s concern about not paying these people, as there are so many crazies out there. But I would pay it if I was SG and maybe she will consider it. I hurt for her.
