Sheriff believes NG is alive because there's no proof of death. Who is going to send a photo of a deceased person to LE? And, why would they?
I’m keeping the faith. I think she’s alive too.

Yes. I may be wrong but it doesn't seem to match.
Idk i can't tell someone's ethnicity from a web page but i assumed a form from inmates shows accurate info. Maybe i'm wrong, also idk if it really matters at this point unless it's DNA specific and comes back as some sort of ethnicity 😅

There has been a lot of back and forth about a single image of the masked man which I'll call the No-Backpack Image
Note that the backpack straps and gun are not visible:

So far I've seen people claim:
  • "The FBI used AI to manipulate the image"
  • "Media used AI to manipulate the image"
  • "This is proof that the FBI actually have more videos"
  • "It's a different person altogether"
I don't know if any of those are true, but what I've done to check is downloaded each of the images and videos released by Cash Patel (Director of the FBI) from this source to compare them, and I've discovered a few interesting clues:
  • The No-Backpack image is not a single frame from any of the three videos released to the public (altered or not) - The man has a completely different pose.
  • There is no meta data showing the original date created (if there was, it was lost when the image was uploaded to X)
  • The "Nest" logo is not shown (is it cropped?)
  • The image size is tiny - resolution is 367 x 546 pixels - this is basically just a thumbnail
  • No-Backpack man is not casting a shadow from the moonlight before he steps under the cover of the the porch (in the other videos, his shadow is obvious)

FIrstly, I have overlaid the No-Backpack image (367x546) over one of the FBI's other full resolution images (1536x2048) to compare the size. This makes the size / resolution disparity quite obvious:

Next I have grabbed a capture from one of the videos that shows the man, roughly in the same position, before he enters the porch (right).
No-Backpack man (left) casts no shadow. Backpack man (right) casts an obvious shadow from the Moonlight
(Note I have cropped/resized images to match each other)

For reference Moonrise on that night was around 4:54 p.m. local time, and moonset was about 6:44 a.m. the next morning.
At around 2am the moon (almost full, 98% brightness) was in the west (to the left looking out of the porch)
The weather in Tuscon at the time was clear. So there should have been bright moonlight all night.

So what does this tell us ?
1. No-Backpack image was taken at a different time
  • Without meta data we don't know the date/time
  • We can probably assume that it was before the other videos (since it looks like he eventually ripped the doorbell camera off its mount and took it with him)
  • It could have been the same evening, but a random cloud was obscuring the moon at that moment
  • It could be days before (a reconnaissance mission perhaps?)

2. The properties of No-Backpack image is significantly different to the other images/videos
  • It's cropped (not full frame - refer to the image with the hand/glove - way more of the brick archway is visible)
  • It is very low resolution - meaning it might be a thumbnail or a still image from a notification
Thumbnails are a graphic representation of one or multiple files, like when you're looking through a photo gallery with 18 images shown on your screen, each of those small images are a single, low resolution thumbnail file.
Without them, you would only see a list of filenames.

Notification images are like a snapshot of an event that might be shown in the Nest App. Again, low resolution.
With Thumbnails and Notification images, the metadata does not necessarily reflect the time that the original image was captured. So Google/FBI may not know what time/date the No-Backpack event actually happened.

3. Was the image manipulated/altered to remove the backpack/gun?
- We can't tell for sure, but I think it's very unlikely.

4. Is No-Backpack image from another video that hasn't been released?
- Probably not. If the FBI had a full resolution video, it would not make any sense to crop and resize a single frame to release to the public in such low resolution).

That's all I have. I hope it clears things up a little, and I apologise for the essay.
We use nest and have their doorbell camera. On the app there is a “familiar faces” option that tracks people with a thumbnail image that’s reviewable. The images don’t have the nest icon on the top. I wonder if this was a separate occurrence (maybe Jan 11?)?

The jacket looks totally different, too!
I never caught the shadow! Good find.

Nancy Guthrie disappearance: Sheriff pleads with suspect to ‘just let her go,’ insists case not cold

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos has made a plea to the suspect in Nancy Guthrie's disappearance, urging the individual to "just let her go."

JMO

Ugh. It's so devastating to know that Nancy IS out there somewhere, even if she's no longer alive. Whatever state she's in right now, I hope she's not suffering and she feels the prayers and support pouring in from all over. What evil people to do this to an elderly woman and her family, seemingly with no end in sight.

This case seems too crazy to sleuth these days. Hope the PCSD and FBI (and SG's PI) have lots of coffee.

I mean I guess that is his way of saying that, absent definitive proof he will keep pursuing this with the ultimate objective of finding her alive vs no longer keeping that as a consideration. I don't like either groups of LE and I think he has not done a great job here, but I will say if I were NG's family I'd be relieved that they are still considering that direction, on the off chance she is still alive and can be rescued. The silence is deafening, but not necessarily a bad thing. Sure, it can be frustrating for us and sometimes it means a case is growing cold, but I feel like LE's recent end to regular pressers and decreasing lack of public appeals, coupled with SG's general silence and measured (occasional) communications, speak volumes here. I think it might just mean they probably know who did this, or have a really good idea, and are just putting the pieces together.

Hope so anyway.

JMO.

I guess I can't hold it against LE for still offering/conducting them, but polygraphs (personally) mean nothing to me, more or less. I know LE swears they use them to "help weed everyone out", but also it's pretty well-established that they're borderline meaningless, which is why they're not allowed as evidence in anything that counts for anything.

So. If they're giving people polygraphs, good for them, I guess. I hope it gives them data they can use. To me this just means they don't know for sure who did this and are hoping to stress someone out enough to make a mistake (totally reasonable and fair; also has NOTHING to do with whether or not polygraphs work as claimed).
Are they asking people to submit to a polygraph as a test to see if they will? Even if someone were innocent yet were extremely distraught which is understandable it could impact the results. IMO this could potentially derail an investigation moving in the right direction. I’m curious if this is a Pima county request only or FBI as well.

Yeah, I think the Sheriff's in a bit of a no-win here. Realistically, Nancy probably isn't alive. He knows that, the FBI knows that and the bulk of the people following the case know that. However if he says so, he looks like an insensitive jerk who's giving up. Better to be positive and ensure the family and public they're still investigating full steam.

My trust in the Daily Mail has tanked over the duration of this case, but "Exclusive":
She's spent the last two weeks filling in for close pal Savannah Guthrie after making an emotional return to the Today Show sofa and now the Daily Mail has learned that Hoda Kotb is hoping to make it permanent.

Kotb, 61, returned to the breakfast TV juggernaut after 54-year-old Guthrie's mom Nancy mysteriously vanished from her Tucson home two weeks ago.

Since then, Guthrie has been holed up in a desert mega-mansion with her siblings waiting out the investigation while the veteran anchor has taken her place on the hotseat.

Now Kotb has made it clear to Today Show bosses that she wants to return full time, despite quitting the show last year to spend more time with her two adopted daughters.

'This isn't just about feelings - it's about protecting the franchise,' an NBC insider exclusively told the Daily Mail.

'Morning TV is a multimillion-dollar machine, and they need stability. Right now, that stability is Hoda.'

Hmmm. Interesting. Is that why SG's hubby flew to AZ yesterday?
Perhaps the FBI has asked each child and their spouses to submit to a polygraph. Dang!

They’re just stirring the pot. Daily mail is like nails on a chalkboard atm

Why would the sheriff publicly clear them and then do a lie detector test?

Ok. I took a copy of the photo and played with the light levels sharpness contrast and definition. There is a pattern on the jacket! I'm confident that's a different jacket than lantana guy. It looks like swirls or the way light plays off of rip stop nylon. View attachment 646386
It's pitch black in the background. I think there is a chance this is from a different time or date or it's heavily altered before release. It was suppose to be a full moon, where is that moonlight?

So first, like you said it's the Daily Mail.

HK is not going to come back and replace SG if SG wants to return. No way no how. NBC would not allow that to happen and there is no way HK would do that to SG. Loyal Today show fans like me as well as a lot of other people would have a fit! If this whole situation with NG wasn't so sad I would laugh at the DM's "Exclusive".

HK and SG were a great team at Today and I was sad to see HK go. Maybe she will come back but believe me, it won't be to replace SG unless she asks to be replaced. Plenty of other roles HK could take on the show.

I have the same doorbell camera and they have a backup battery inside just in case power goes out.

Leaving with her out the front door makes the most sense, as it’s the easiest route, especially with potentially carrying someone. What’s questionable is why access and remove the front door camera from outside the home? If you already subdued her and accessed the home from the back; why not just open the front door from inside her house and put something over the camera to break it off? It would’ve completely prevented him from being seen at all from that camera.

What you said about simply removing the door camera from inside the home is one reason of many that I had pause when people were adamant of family involvement.
The other was the man looking at the side of Nancy's porch for something to help obscure and/or remove the camera.
Another thing is Nancy's door, her neighbor said the man appeared to her to not be familiar with that type of secure screen door.
Family and friends would already know about those things.

Sorry for the tangent...
I don't think the man initially planned on removing that door camera because I don't think he thought it would be working.
Now this is working on the data that the camera was disconnected at 1:47 a.m. and he is seen at 2:12 a.m.
I think he might have already been inside and he was coming around to the front door to have someone open the front door for him to bring Nancy out.
Was he a lone wolf and was Nancy still conscious and alert albeit bleeding and he told her to come to the front door so he could bring her out to a waiting vehicle?
Or was it an acomplice of his who was already inside ready to help bring Nancy out?

The point being - he knew he had to remove that door camera the moment he walked up to her door and noticed it was still active. Active more than likely due to it being battery operated if disconnected or the power being cut - like yours.

Split between the sheriff and the FBI? I have no idea...
