Finance Firm Founder Gets 6 Months in College Bribery Scam

The founder of a Silicon Valley venture capital firm was sentenced to six months behind bars for paying about $450,000 in bribes to boost his two daughters’ entrance exam scores and get one of them into Georgetown University as a bogus tennis recruit.

Manuel Henriquez, the 57-year-old founder and ex-CEO of Hercules Capital based in Palo Alto, California, cried and dabbed his eyes with a tissue as he prayed for forgiveness from his children and other families he hurt, and asked the judge for mercy.

“There is no perfect way to express how broken I feel in my heart and soul,” said Henriquez, who sat next to his lawyer and wore a face mask for much of the hearing held via videoconference because of the coronavirus pandemic.

His wife, Elizabeth Henriquez, was sentenced in March to seven months behind bars. She is currently locked up at a prison in California and is expected to be released in January, according to online records.

U.S. District Judge Nathaniel Gorton called Henriquez a hypocrite who donated money to aid children, while at the same time using his wealth and privilege to put his kids ahead of other less fortunate students in the college admissions process.

“It’s a sad day,” the judge said.

Mastermind in college admissions scam recently enrolled in doctorate program: court records

William “Rick” Singer was enrolled in an online doctorate program at Arizona’s Grand Canyon University, according to a July 16 motion filed by his attorneys. Just days later, however, the California resident apparently dropped out of the program, the Arizona Republic reported.

Singer, who completed five classes in his psychology program at Grand Canyon University, had sought permission to travel to the Phoenix-based school to attend a required residency meeting, court documents show.

A federal judge in Boston, where the case is being prosecuted, granted his request, but it was not immediately clear why he left the university days later.

One of his attorneys had described him as a dedicated student who was getting good grades.

“Mr. Singer has maintained a B average for his first four classes and has received an A in his fifth class,” attorney Donald Heller wrote in the motion.

Ex-UCLA Soccer Coach Pleads Guilty in College Admissions Case

The former men's soccer coach at UCLA pleaded guilty Monday to conspiring with Newport Beach businessman William "Rick" Singer and others to help get students whose parents paid bribes admitted to the university as soccer recruits.

Jorge Salcedo, 47, of Los Angeles, entered a guilty plea in Boston federal court to one count of conspiracy to commit racketeering. U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani will not formally accept the plea until sentencing on Nov. 24, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office in Boston.

According to the terms of the plea agreement, the government will recommend a sentence at the low end of the guidelines -- one year of supervised release, a fine, forfeiture in the amount of $200,000 and restitution.

Former test administrator to plead guilty in college scam

Niki Williams, 46, a former employee of the Houston Independent School District, will plead guilty to accepting bribes to help rig students’ test scores.

Prosecutors say Williams, who administered the college entrance exams at the public high school where she worked, took bribes from admissions consultant Rick Singer in exchange for allowing someone to take exams in place of the children of Singer’s clients or correct their answers.

Williams will plead guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and mail fraud and honest services wire fraud and mail fraud.

L.A. father whose tip exposed Singer's college admissions scandal gets one year in prison

Morrie Tobin, the Los Angeles financier who tipped federal authorities in Boston to William “Rick” Singer’s college admissions scam, was sentenced Wednesday to a year and a day in prison for selling stock at fraudulently inflated prices to unwitting investors, robbing them of millions.

U.S. District Judge Nathaniel M. Gorton acknowledged Tobin’s “extraordinary” cooperation in helping unravel both his own securities fraud and “the infamous college admissions case,” but he said he could not allow a felon who has admitted trying to fleece investors of $15 million to avoid prison.

“Your motive was pure and simple greed,” Gorton told him.

He ordered Tobin, 57, to report to prison by Sept. 23.

Last month, Variety reported, Tobin listed his eight-bedroom, 10-bathroom Hancock Park mansion for $13.5 million.

Feds urge judge to OK prison deals for Loughlin, Giannulli

Boston — Federal prosecutors urged a judge Monday to accept deals that call for “Full House” actor Lori Loughlin to spend two months in prison and her fashion designer husband, Mossimo Giannulli, to serve five months for paying half a million dollars to bribe their daughters’ way into college.

Ahead of the famous couple's scheduled sentencing hearings Friday, prosecutors said in court filings that the proposed prison terms are comparable to the sentences other prominent parents charged in the case have received, while accounting for Loughlin and Giannulli's “repeated and deliberate conduct” and their "decision to allow their children to become complicit in crime."

Prosecutors called Giannulli “the more active participant in the scheme,” while they said Loughlin “took a less active role, but was nonetheless fully complicit.”...

Lori Loughlin May Get Prison Time - Variety

I don't like the "deal". Basically, the judge has to accept their plea deal, with the entire package, including the penalty. The judge cannot set a different time for prison sentence. This, or trial.

That smacks of privilege. Poor folks don't get an iron clad deal like this when they make a plea. There is no "guarantee" that the judge will stay with the recommendations. The level of disgust with this entire situation is beyond. And the entitlement mentality continues. Probably LL and Giannulli moved to their new pad, so they can stay in some lush, private cell. Wouldn't surprise me a bit.

How Lori Loughlin involved daughters in USC fraud: feds (timeline)

For more than a year, Loughlin, 56, and Giannulli, 57, insisted on their innocence in court filings and in leaks to the media, saying they believed their payments to Singer were legitimate donations. Prosecutors say that Giannulli deserves a longer sentence because he was “the more active participant in the scheme.” While Loughlin “took a less active role,” prosecutors say she was “nonetheless fully complicit”, the memo show.

In 2016, Loughlin and Giannulli first began talking to Singer about creating a fake “coxswain” profile for their older daughter Isabella. Singer told the couple, “it would probably help to get a picture with her on an ERG in workout clothes like a real athlete too.” While Isabella did not row crew, Giannulli, copying his wife in on an email to Singer, wrote: “Fantastic. Will get all.”

When Giannulli sent Singer a photo of Isabella rowing, he copied Isabella in on the email. Several days after Singer told Giannulli that the fake profile was in the works, Giannulli rebuffed a USC development official’s offer to “flag” his daughter’s application. “Thanks so much, I think we are squared away,” Giannulli wrote. He forwarded it to Loughlin with the note, “the nicest I’ve been at blowing off somebody.”

After alleged co-conspirator Donna Heinel, USC’s senior associate athletic director, secured Isabella’s conditional admission to the university, Singer told Giannulli to mail Heinel a $50,000 check, payable to “USC Athletics.” Giannulli asked Singer, “For accounting purposes would I categorize this as a donation?”

In March 2017, Giannulli paid Singer by making a purported $200,000 donation to Singer’s nonprofit. Giannulli forwarded the invoice to his financial adviser, writing, “Good news my (older) daughter (got) into USC … bad (news) is I had to work the system.”

After Giannulli thanked Singer for his “great work” and the “end result” he had achieved for Isabella, he and Loughlin asked Singer to secure a second spot for Olivia Jade at USC. Singer and the couple began the process of falsifying Olivia Jade’s athletic profile by having her pose for a photo on a rowing machine.

In August 2017, convicted co-conspirator Laura Janke, a former USC soccer coach, told Singer she needed additional information about Olivia Jade to “finish her resume and add a rowing club based off where she lives." Singer forwarded the request to Giannulli, who in turn forwarded it to Loughlin, who in turn forwarded it to Olivia Jade, who provided additional information.

After Heinel secured Olivia Jade’s conditional admission to USC, Singer forwarded her parents a letter from USC indicating that the decision was based on her “potential to make a significant contribution to the intercollegiate athletic program." Loughlin responded with a high-five emoji and a note that read, “This is wonderful news!”

In January 2018, Loughlin, Giannulli and Olivia Jade discussed how to avoid the possibility that a high school counselor would disrupt their scheme. When Olivia Jade asked whether she should list USC as her top choice school, Loughlin replied: “Yes . . . But it might be a flag for the weasel to meddle.” Giannulli added: “(Expletive) him,” and called the counselor a “nosy 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬.”

Loughlin thereafter instructed her daughter: “Don’t say too much to that man.”

In March 2018, the counselor advised a USC admissions official that he had “no knowledge of (Olivia Jade’s) involvement in crew and based on what I knew of her video blogging schedule, I highly doubted she was involved in crew.”

That’s when Giannulli headed to the high school and confronted the counselor. Contemporaneous notes of the meeting show that Giannulli “aggressively asked what (the counselor) was telling USC about his daughters and why (the counselor) was trying to ruin or get in the way of their opportunities.” Giannulli “bluntly stated that (Olivia Jade) was a coxswain.”

Lori Loughlin’s Daughter Olivia Jade Planning ‘Mommy Going To Jail Party': 'Lots Of Goodbye Speeches'

...with the sentencing set for this Friday, August 21, daughter Olivia Jade is planning a “going away party” for mommy and daddy.

“The family are facing this head on. They are not pretending that it isn’t happening and not burying their heads in the sand. Rather, close friends and family are set to gather on Thursday evening at the family’s home to say goodbye. It is like a ‘mommy going to jail’ party, along with drinks and a cake (presumably without a file in it!).”

The event will not be catered “by an outside company” because “they want it to be a very private affair,” the insider reveals. “I’m sure there will be lots of tears and laughter and lots of goodbye speeches.”

The YouTube star, 20 — who is organizing the festivities — “is glad to finally get this thing behind her,” the insider adds. “Although, there are going to be a few advantages of having mommy and daddy locked up. There will be no one around telling her what time she needs to be in bed. With her parents away, I’m assuming this won’t be the last house party that Olivia will plan!”

However, Jade, who is an influencer, is “mortified” over the recent purchase, OK! previously reported. “She is a Bel-Air type of girl; this new house in Hidden Hills is the equivalent of living in the valley. Olivia is a social media star with over one million followers and has a certain lifestyle she needs to keep up for her fans. Needless to say, she won’t be recording any new videos from this house.”

“This tiny shed that is now her family home is embarrassing,” the insider added. “No one who is anyone in L.A. lives in a home that is worth less than 10 million.”

The new property is not prominently featured, either, which Jade is not happy about. “You try going from calling Mediterranean villa that was built in 1929 and sits along the fairways of Bel-Air Country Club, to living at the end of a cul-de-sac no one has ever heard of and tell me you wouldn’t be mortified,” the source explained.

Luckily, Jade’s pals are “standing by her during this painful time,” but don’t expect to see them “visiting any time soon.”

My hear breaks for them. I can attest that "shed living" can be hard on one's spirit. As a shed dweller, I have worked hard to find meaning in my living conditions by getting a job and working more that 60 hours a week--less shed time and more real world experiences. They might want to try this type of therapy as I think it can work out well. Prison will help them to jump start on this new chapter. It will be so difficult but I do hope they have basic amenities like running water and a few servants....

"So now that they’ve landed in Hidden Hills, what did they get for their multimillions?

A brand-new build. No renovations required! A huge plus in our book.

The six-bedroom, nine-bathroom abode spans 11,748 square feet. The modern farmhouse-style residence is sparkling and features high ceilings, maple floors, and offers “luxury country living.”

The open floor plan includes glass sliding doors opening to the outside living area. The custom chef’s kitchen, described as a “dream” in the listing, has white oak cabinets, marble counters, and high-end appliances. The master suite boasts a fireplace, two baths, and views.

Luxe amenities include a temperature-controlled, walk-in wine cellar, gym, office, and movie theater.

Set on 1.57 acres, the sprawling grounds feature pool and spa, fire pit, barbecue, and views of the hills.

“This Hidden Hills home is on a much larger lot and is much more private,” says Cara Ameer, a bicoastal agent with Coldwell Banker licensed in California and Florida." https://www.orlandosentinel.com/bus...0200814-rlx5klprsrbzhagrpeu6r4laji-story.html

@kaen I am so sorry that you have to suffer the humiliation of living in a "shed". Compared to the "shed", I live in a shoebox.

It's a shame that Olivia can't buy her own house, one that would be up to her standards.

Thank you for feeling my pain. I can't believe that I overstated my living conditions. I am also closer to life between a shoebox and match box. Nevertheless, I am sure this family will survive the downsize.

Giannulli is scheduled to be sentenced Friday at 11 a.m., and Loughlin is expected to be sentenced later that afternoon.

Prosecutors request Lori Loughlin get 2 months in prison and Mossimo Giannulli get 5 months

"Unlike most plea agreements, in which the judge remains free to decide the sentence, Loughlin and Giannulli’s were built into their deals so if the judge accepts the agreements, he cannot change the prison term."

So, it doesn't sound like the prosecution is "requesting" anything. They are presenting the deal, already signed and sealed. The judge literally zero judicial discretion in this case. The judge accepts it, or not.

I wish SO much, that the judge would NOT accept this.

Lori Loughlin KNOWINGLY involved daughters in college admissions scandal | Daily Mail Online

A new memo from federal prosecutors claims that actress Lori Loughlin and husband Mossimo Gianulli knowingly involved their daughters in the scheme to bribe their way into college.

The memo, sent on Monday to the judge who will issue the couple's sentence this week, revealed a previously unreported exchange with daughter Olivia Jade, 20, in which they encouraged her to lie to her high school's college counselor.

It alleges Loughlin, 56, referred to the counselor as a 'weasel' who may try to 'meddle' and further cautioned her daughter 'don't say too much to that man'.

It adds the celebrity couple allowed their children to become 'complicit in crime' as they pushed Olivia Jade and her older sister Isabella Rose, 21, to pose in staged photographs that falsely made it appear like they were rowers to gain college admission.
