Abhijit Mahato, engineering student at Duke University in Durham, NC, a 29-year-old native of Tatangar, India, was found shot dead at close range in his Durham, NC, apartment on January 18, 2008.

Laurence Lovette, already serving a life sentence for the murder of Eve Carson, UNC Student Body President, will go on trial on July 14, 2014, in Durham, NC.

This link is from WRAL, Raleigh, NC, and it also has links within it which gives additional information.

Re testimony transcripts. Sometimes it takes weeks for the court stenographer to type up the transcripts.

In response to Boodles post I haven't seen a Judge yet allow a jury to see prior testimony. I think they are always told to rely on their memory and notes.

Now do I always agree, not necessarily but that has seemed to be the case in all the trials I have watched! In this case there was so much I don't know or I don't remember. Did some of the juror's not pay attention? IDK

IIRC Philip was a mumbler and hard to understand---transcript would have been nice! But basically all he did say was "he lied"--and TiTi--wall she said was I don't recall--nothing really with either of them.

So that makes sense if they are going to review any testimony they would have review all of the testimony. That is what the trial was for, and they have to rely on their notes and their memory.

I hope I stated that correctly.

If it warrants and this court allows victim impact statements I wonder who will speak on behalf of the dead young man?

I don't understand why all the evidence would have to be reviewed. If a juror is fuzzy about recalling something why not allow them to review what evidence they ask for to clear up the confusion.

How did this jury get to understand about TT and Philip's testimonies resulting in a mistrial? WOW

Jewels I thought that is what this judge said when he disallowed the transcripts?

I'm trying to find a link to what was just said in court. Maybe the judge said if he allowed this it would result in a mistrial? IDK but I remember hearing about a mistrial connected with this defendant. I thought it was the other murder but I'm not sure.
