Woman reportedly kidnapped near Mecklenburg County hotel found safe, police say

A woman who was reportedly kidnapped near a Mecklenburg County hotel on Monday was found safe, authorities said.

Witnesses allegedly told police that the woman was forced into a BMW near the Extended Stay hotel on Matthews-Mint Hill Road just before 11:30 a.m. on June 2.

Matthews police said that after she was reportedly forced into the car, the car sped away.

Police said that she and the suspect -- 23-year-old Logan William Calaway -- know each other, but did not say how.

Police said that anyone who sees Calaway should not approach him as he could be dangerous

The only prior court records I could find for him was paperwork from a 2013 adoption when he was about 10 years old (was he in the foster system I wonder?) a minor marijuana possession (less than 1/2 oz.), misdemeaner larceny (several involving stolen goods), carrying a concealed weapon, and probation violation (2020/2022)

They are showing an arrest day of today and I've attached a "Conditions of Release" but RELEASE WAS NOT AUTHORIZED but he was to provide fingerprints and DNA.

Good find @GraceG. They’ve caught him. Anybody know why stalking is a misdemeanor in this case? And if the kidnapping and strangulation are felonies?
The kidnapping is indeed a felony. There shall be two degrees of kidnapping as defined by subsection (a) of Statute 14.39 (North Carolina) - If the person kidnapped either was not released by the defendant in a safe place or had been seriously injured or sexually assaulted, the offense is kidnapping in the first degree and is punishable as a Class C felony. If the person kidnapped was released in a safe place by the defendant and had not been seriously injured or sexually assaulted, the offense is kidnapping in the second degree and is punishable as a Class E felony. The court records currently show this as a Class E, but it might be something that can change pending further investigation and examination of the victim.

The Strangulation was listed under North Carolina General Statute 14-32.4(b) which defines felony assault by strangulation, specifically stating that any person who assaults another and inflicts physical injury by strangulation is guilty of a Class H felony.

Here is a link to the state's enacted legislation which offers a detailed legal explanation of stalking, it's a misdemeaner, but in this case, it was the behavior that led up to the felony behavior (kidnapping strangulation) so even if the outcome is a felony and charged as such, the act of stalking is still, under State Statute, a misdemeaner. Just my opinion - I'm not an attorney.
