Can you explain what exclusion means? I mean, I see that Bethany has the tattoo and scar you mentioned, but I don’t see anywhere to see an exclusion?
Seeing NamUs exclusions (unidentified bodies that have been proven not to be a missing person, or missing people proven not to be an unidentified body) requires you to make a NamUs account. If you do this, the "Exclusions" tab will show up in between "Images & Documents" and "Contacts".
Exclusions can be made after comparing dental records, fingerprints, DNA, biometric data like height/weight/scars/marks/tattoos, or by having somebody who knew an MP look at a UID's morgue photo to visually confirm they are not the same person. Sometimes, exclusions are made improperly, and there have been several cases where a reported missing person was excluded from being themselves in NamUs. Here are Websleuths threads for 5 examples of this happening:
Robert Stuewe was excluded from being himself after dental records from a relative were obtained by authorities instead of his own:
Identified! - MI - Jackson Co., WhtMale UP8183, 23-35, blonde, tie-dye TShirt, Aug'86 - Robert Lee Stuewe
Robby Peay was excluded from being himself after his dental records as an MP were entered in crime databases upside down:
Identified! - UT - Moab, Three Gossips area of Arches Nat Park, WhtMale 18-25, UP8196, Camel cigs, clothes, Feb'83 Robby Peay
Hector Garcia was excluded from being himself after incorrect DNA analysis:
Identified! - TX - Harris-Waller County Line, HispMale 17-32, woven leather belt, March 20, 2002 - Hector Jose Garcia
Kenneth Gridiron Jr. was excluded from being himself after incorrect DNA analysis:
Resolved - Ca - Inglewood, UnkMale 2-5, UP3708, K-Mart sweatshirt, in storage facility, Feb'94 - NamUs removed
Sharon Gallegos was excluded from being herself after her baby footprints were compared to post-mortem footprints as a toddler (we know now that footprints change shape as humans age, but this was not known during the 1960s when she was recovered):
Identified! - AZ - Yavapai Co, 'Little Miss Nobody', WhtFem 6-7, UP10741, Jul'60 - Sharon Lee Gallegos
In this specific instance, this missing woman was proven not to be an unidentified human skeleton recovered in Knox Co TN on 8/16/2022 (if you read further upthread, you'll see that authorities made this exclusion through discrepancies in dental records after a tip from a user on this forum).
The 1 case Bethany Buckles was excluded from being has also already been resolved; she was identified in early 2025 as 47yo Erin C. Callahan from Knoxville through dental records.
Erin Callahan was identified as the body discovered near Fourth and Gill in Knoxville back in 2022.
