A 70-year old woman possibly suffering from dementia has been missing since Sunday.

Brenda Hoover Velazquez was last seen Sunday afternoon at Sunny Lane, a short road that intersects with Poplar Branch Road near U.S. 158, according to an alert issued by the N.C. Center for Missing Persons.

Velaquez is white, 5-feet-3 and 135 pounds, with short red hair. She wears black-rimmed glasses, and was wearing a red long-sleeve sweatshirt, gray pants and black sneakers, according to the alert.

Anyone with information about her whereabouts was asked to call 911 or the Currituck County Sheriff's Office at 252-232-2216.

A woman believed to be suffering from dementia who had been missing since Sunday, has been found alive and being transported to an area hospital for treatment.

Currituck Sheriff Susan Johnson said in an email today that Brenda Hoover Velazquez was found by a volunteer searcher.

A woman believed to be suffering from dementia who had been missing since Sunday afternoon, was in stable condition at an area hospital Tuesday afternoon after she was rescued from a swampy area in Grandy.

Brenda Hoover Velazquez was discovered in the area of Mimosa Lane, behind the Grandy McDonald’s, by a volunteer who had been assisting with the search for her, Currituck County Fire-EMS Chief Chip Melton said.

Authorities were alerted at 2:26 p.m., and Currituck sheriff's deputies, Lower Currituck volunteer firefighters, Currituck Fire-EMS and state wildlife authorities responded, Melton said.

According to Melton, Velazquez was knee-deep in boggy terrain when authorities arrived to assist her.

"She was in an area that was hard to get to her and was hard to get out of," Melton said.

After Velazquez was removed from the swampy area, she was treated at the scene and then transported to Outer Banks Hospital, Melton said.
