HICKORY, N.C. (WBTV/AP) - Officials in Catawba County are trying to identify a body that was discovered by two men in canoes on the South Fork River this weekend.

As of Tuesday morning, Catawba County Sheriff Coy Reid said investigators were still waiting for a positive identification before contacting family members.

Elliott Teague and Justin Collins said they were in separate canoes on Sunday when Teague spotted the body dressed in pants and work boots floating near a log on an isolated stretch of the river in Catawba County near Lincoln County.

Deputies said the body may have been in the river for as long as two weeks.

He was identified as Absalon Gomez, or Absolon, the articles spell it differently.

The man found dead in the South Fork River on Sunday was murdered.

Catawba County Sheriff Coy Reid said 23-year-old Absalon Gomez was shot to death before his body was located earlier this week in the river near Maiden.
