It's a shame her mother died without knowing the truth. Something horrible happened here-why was she wearing clothes that didn't fit. That crime scene was messy as hell.

One thing I don't get-Debbie lived alone in a small cabin way back from the road-how far away were neighbors? If I were a woman alone, I wouldn't live there. Too many things could happen.

The police botched this and I wonder if it was done on purpose.

The Debbie Wolfe murder is horrific. It's 100% obvious that this was a murder, not a suicide. This case has a lot of strange elements:

-DW's body being found in a burn barrel which later disappeared; it's very possible/probable this was the one the mother remembers seeing on DW's property (that they used for target shooting). Strange that the authorities said that there wasn't a burn barrel, when the initial searcher(s) were 100% she was in one (when she was first found in the water). Sounds like a classic case of incompetence/sloppiness, or possibly an intentional cover-up.

-Debbie being dressed in clothes that obviously weren't hers.

-Her house being a mess (including a nurse uniform on the floor in the kitchen) which apparently wasn't normal for her.

-Empty beer cans in the yard near the car, which weren't the brand that Debbie drank. Also, even if Debbie did drink them - why would she have kept them strewn all over the yard, if she had been as neat/meticulous as her family claimed?!

-The mysterious phone message from someone saying that they missed her at work, and that she had missed a lot of days (when her mother knew that wasn't true). They never said who this phone message was from, but it almost sounded like a concerned supervisor. However, it wasn't mentioned that the call was from someone legitimate. So, given that the call was treated with suspicion in the segment & the mother saying that Debbie rarely missed work, it sounds like the call was from someone either 'checking in' on Debbie, or possibly someone covering his tracks?!

It sounds like Debbie was single & lived alone (no room-mates were mentioned). And, she lived in an isolated cabin near a lake. So - unfortunately, whatever happened to her probably wasn't seen or heard by anyone - since it didn't seem that anyone lived nearby.

As far as who possibly committed the murder & the ransacking/trashing of the house, etc:

It's possible that either of the two suspects the family suspected (the two volunteers at the hospital who were bugging her for a date, but that she wasn't into) could have done this, but it also sounds like they were both cleared by the authorities.

Another possibility is that this was a completely random crime. I.e., I wonder if some psycho/junkie/criminal just wandered into the area & decided to kill her & trash the cabin, possibly looking for valuables?! Or, maybe someone she didn't know knew about the cabin & wanted to see if she had anything of value they could steal?! Given the isolation of the cabin, I don't see this even being that unlikely. The parents & LE didn't mention whether or not anything of value was missing from the cabin, but I doubt she had much of value there anyway.

This tragic case absolutely should have and would have been solved had LE not been so incompetent. Debbie Wolfe deserved better.

Do we know if LE interviewed the supervisor at the hospital that DW worked at to see if she actually had missed days of work recently? This detail could help put in perspective the voice-mail the male volunteer left, because if she had been sick earlier in the month with missing days, the message wouldn't seem as suspicious.

January 1, 2025 marked the 39th anniversary of the discovery of Debbie in her pond. The dates and days of the week December 2024- January 2025 coincide with those of December 1985-January 1986. So you can look at a calender and get a clear perspective on the effect Holidays and weekends had on the investigation. You can look outside and see how the short days did the same.
Law enforcement response was within the norms. Obviously they did not have the same sense of urgency as the family. Personality clashes caused problems with communication, coordination and cooperation.
Officially this is a closed case, accidental death. So it is not a cold case. It would probably take political action from the Governer of North Carolina to change this status.

All the previous links are broken. It sounds like you have a lot of info about the case. You mention Unsolved Mysteries and some podcasts. Are those your sources?

I don't think I can agree that LE response was "within the norms." Waiting seven days, denying there was a barrel, and not searching the pond all seem a little off.

Also IMO the phone message sounds extremely suspicious especially in light of her death.

The sources I've read from can't seem to agree on whether or not the stalker/harasser/caller was a volunteer, an employee, or a patient.

Question about your statement "the only source that anyone was harassing, stalking Debbie or had mental problems was Jenny Debbie's mother. I couldn't find any independent source to corroborate her accusations," do you mean that there are people from her life who actually said they had no knowledge of this, or do you mean you could find no mention of it whatsoever?

Even if someone actually said they were unaware of someone harassing her, it's not uncommon for a mother to be the only person a woman would tell that to. You said "her accusations." Was her mother accusing someone?

Did anyone else notice this 2012 post which had a broken link is now linked to a 2019 Fayetteville Observer Article?

From my notes this first post by Sundrop establishing this thread was originally linked to a January. 1, 1988 article by the late Pat Reese in the Fayetteville Observer. Pat Reese who passed away in September 2000 was a legend in Fayetteville NC as an activist, journalist and actor.
In my opinion the article is the single best source on the unexplained death of Debbie Wolfe. I couldn't get the share to work with this phone.
I went to The Examiner website and couldn't find the article by Dr Maurice Godwin anywhere. It used to be linked to this thread.
Parts of both articles are avaible at other sites as parts of posts and comments.

4 decades ago Saturday January 4, 1986 an open casket Celebration of Life was held for Debbie in Fayetteville NC. It was a private affair for family & close friends. The printed program resembled a wedding invitation and featured her now iconic Nurse photo. The same photo poster size was displayed on a tripod. She was transported to Arcadia, Louisiana where Catholic services were conducted and she was buried Tuesday January 7, 1986. Obituary, details & photos are available

The original Unsolved Mysteries episode narrated by Robert Stack is one of my references. Season 3 episode 14 (48 minutes 6 seconds) Death by Drowning segment( 14 minutes 52 seconds) aired December 19, 1990. It can be viewed on line. Jenny Edwards is interviewed and answers in her own words. Robert Stack states" 4PM the day after Christmas, upon completing her shift at the hospital, Debbie Wolfe left work. Presumably heading home."

Friday Dec 27 Her mother called the hospital sometime between noon and one PM.
Monday Dec 30 8:30 AM Mrs. Edwards calls the hospital and learned Wolfe had not returned to work. the article describes the submission of Missing Persons report and photo that morning. 4:30 PM LT William Nichols arrived at the Edwards mobile park on Murchison rd. Article describes him being unable to find the cabin and promising to start the search in the morning.

Law enforcement conducted their first official search Tuesday December 31, 1985 New Years Eve. This is one day after the missing persons report was submitted. It was the morning of the 4th day from when they were first called Friday afternoon December 27th. They did not wait seven days. That is bad math and misinformation. You probably had faulty sources very common.

In my opinion the phone message was awkward not sinister. In my opinion Jenny's statements in print and video about the two volunteers amount to accusations. I could not find any source other than Jenny that Debbie was being stalked or that the volunteers were involved or that anyone was mentally ill.
