"Irving was shot to death in the 800 block of Grace Street in front of the home where he'd lived the past six months, according to Wilmington police.
Family members said Clark's late-night phone call is too common for parents in some Wilmington neighborhoods, and it was something Irving's family says they struggled to prevent.
For the past few months, Clark said, Irving had been harassed by a gang and that they shot up his car several months ago. Clark said she'd asked police for help and encouraged Irving to file a complaint with officers, but he refused.
"I went through all kinds of channels to stop this," she said. "And I'm hurt because it was to no avail."
Clark said Irving had never been in a gang, and while he'd been in trouble as a young man, he'd pulled his life together and was focused on raising his family. He and longtime girlfriend, Ebony Hines, have a 17-month-old daughter, Jada.

Police say someone approached Irving as he got out of his car minutes before midnight Saturday and shot him several times. He was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center where he died, according to a statement from Lucy Crockett, spokeswoman for Wilmington police.
The killing is under investigation, Crockett said, and she declined to discuss details of the case.
On Monday afternoon the 800 block of Grace Street showed no sign of murder. Children's toys sat on the porch of Irving's home at 813.
One neighbor said he was shocked and unnerved by the killing. The man, who asked that his name not be used because of fears for his safety, said he had no idea what happened. Irving was quiet but friendly, the neighbor said, and seemed like a good person."
