Backstory and Case Overview

The disappearance of 25-year-old Evonte Jaquez McNeill began on November 24, 2023, during a period when he was experiencing a mental health crisis. Public information shows he went to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center for help. Fayetteville Police have said that the hospital is the last location they can officially confirm, noting that he was discharged from the facility that same day.

Around this timeframe, police told his family that an ambulance was requested due to his condition, but when responders arrived, they were unable to locate him. No publicly released 911 timestamps, logs, or dispatch audio clarify when the call was made or where he was expected to be when help arrived.

In separate statements, family members reported that they were on the phone with Evonte after he left the hospital. They believe he drove to the Fayetteville Police Department headquarters on Hay Street, based on that final call. During the conversation, they say he expressed fear, said he felt he was being followed, and told them the lobby doors were closed. This phone call is the last reported communication anyone had with him.

Investigators later tracked his phone to an area close to the police headquarters, but no publicly released camera footage has confirmed where he went after leaving the hospital or after being near the station.

In the days following his disappearance, family members and community supporters searched the surrounding downtown area, distributing flyers near the Hay Street corridor and around the Cape Fear Valley campus. Law enforcement issued public alerts seeking help from the community. A Missing Endangered Alert was activated by the N.C. Center for Missing Persons, then later canceled by the requesting agency — a step that does not mean he was found, only that the alert period ended.

As of 2025, there have been no confirmed sightings and no new publicly released updates explaining where Evonte went after November 24. With no recent developments and minimal attention on this case throughout the past year, this disappearance is being highlighted again as a Cold Case Spotlight, encouraging renewed awareness and community support.

Someone in this community may hold the missing piece that brings answers to a case that has gone quiet for far too long. Sharing his story keeps it alive, and every tip matters.

The family of Evonte McNeill plans to conduct a foot search this weekend in Fayetteville as questions continue to surround his disappearance.

McNeill has been missing since November 2023 after he was released from Cape Fear Valley Medical Center following a mental health crisis. His mother, Tiana Melvin, said she still has no answers about where her son may be.

*****
According to Melvin, McNeill told her that he was catching a ride home after leaving the hospital. She said he later called again, saying someone was following him. Melvin urged her son to go to the Fayetteville Police Department headquarters, but the lobby was closed at the time.

Melvin said at some point afterward, McNeill called 911, reporting that someone was chasing him near the Walmart on Gillespie Street. The call was disconnected and no one has heard from him since.

*****
The disappearance has been especially difficult for Melvin, who lost another son just two years earlier. Her 16-year-old son was killed during a home invasion.

*****
Melvin said she believes the Fayetteville Police Department has not done enough to investigate her son’s disappearance.

“The FBI tells me the Fayetteville Police Department denied their help, but the Fayetteville Police Department is telling me they don’t have enough missing persons detectives,” she said.
