its been a year since MESO was arrested. How is it possible a person can be in jail for a full year with no movement in his case? Where is the ACLU or whatever organization that would step in? I am not at all saying i support MESO, but what happened to a speedy trial? This is so bizarre

I have no idea if it's normal or what is going on. It feels interminable. I have no idea what might be going on behind the scenes, I wish I knew. If I recall, it took several years for Eve Carson's case to come to trial and we knew very little about what was going on in that case, until it made it to court.

well, there is a court date for next Thur. (Oct. 13), but I think it is simply to state the charges and have him enter a plea (if someone knows differently let us know)... I don't think it in any way sets a trial date nor adds any more info to what we already know (like further arrests). What makes this all so bizarre is that this is basically the court appearance that was set a full year ago, then cancelled without explanation, and no further news for an entire year, and not even getting much fanfare now???

Is it possible that a plea deal has been worked out which might result in a guilty plea?

I'm not sure what the "deal" would be?... the death penalty has already been taken off the table. All I can imagine is possibly charging him with 2nd degree murder with some eventual possibility of parole, rather than 1st degree murder with no possibility of parole (but I'm no lawyer).

Pleading down to 2nd degree is pretty standard. But as far as why I think there could be a plea deal in the works, I can't think of any other reason why it would take over a year to have an arraignment, unless there was some sort of negotiation going on behind the scenes.

I think it's very likely that the reason that the hearing was cancelled and not rescheduled is that the parties are working out a plea deal.

Do we know if the court hearing happened today?

I can’t find anything online about it. I signed up for an alert last year whenever there was an update on the case, but I didn’t receive anything.

yeah same here... ??? ... is there a link somewhere to the appropriate court docket to see if it was even listed?

I went back to the links I posted last year (post #81 in this thread.) He still shows up in the inmate population, but all it lists there is that he's incarcerated and his arrest date. Clicking on his name just takes you to another page showing which facility he's in and who the reporting agency is (Durham County.)
Literally nothing remotely new at all.
Maybe one day in the future we'll have new things to talk about, but today apparently isn't that day.

I said in one of the articles posted "His next court date is scheduled for Thursday, October 13 — but it is largely procedural and not the start of any trial. Salguero-Olivares’ appearance is part of an annual homicide status conference, which the court and district attorney’s office hold in an administrative setting to go over every homicide case still active or pending."
So it really wasn't anything public would be notified of.

I don't think this case will ever go to trial, we've heard more about the Delphi murderer in the past week than we've heard anything about this case since the arrest a year ago...

I agree that it is quite a frustrating situation; I was particularly astonished to learn that the Delphi trial is scheduled to start in March 2023! And the arrest was just LAST WEEK!
I don’t know why North Carolina in particular takes so long to bring these cases to trial, but I guess we’re all in it for the long haul here.

I REALLY hope this is just the way NC operates and it will eventually go to trial but my gut feeling isn't great.

It does unfortunately seem to be on the longer end of things. Eve Carson (no trial, suspects plead guilty) took over two years from indictment to sentencing. Craig Hicks (confessed immediately, no trial) took over four. Those are the two most prominent cases in Chapel Hill that I can think of over the last decade or so.
Maybe next Fall we’ll hear something new. In some ways it’s even more frustrating than before the arrest, because at least then we at least had the occasional media coverage of the case to talk about. Now it’s just complete radio silence.

Celisa Lehew named Chief recently

thought this quote was interesting when discussing Eve Carson and FH's cases (bold by me):
“Those were very dear to my heart, and definitely (I) formed strong relationships with the families, and I’m just so thankful that we were able to bring a little bit of closure for them,” Lehew said Friday.

So arresting a suspect is closure then? Even if nothing has happened since?

I suspect things are happening (i.e., long plea negotiation, collection of more evidence against him for other crimes, etc.), they just aren't visible to us. I think it would be a big relief to me to have someone identified when it was such a mystery for so long.

As a local, I fear your optimism could be mistaken. The judicial system is a mess and everything is severely backed up. I was selected earlier this year to be on the jury for a murder in Durham County that happened in 2019. They are citing the pandemic as the reason for the delays, but...

I worry that since they've taken the death penalty off the table a plea won't be happening. Which sucks because it just doesn't feel like a 1 perpetrator kind of case, and if anyone else was involved the death penalty being on the table would add pressure on MESO to name any others.

It's crazy to me how little attention the case has gotten locally.

Not to take us off-topic, but it's relevant to add that the aforementioned trial- after the nearly 3 year wait- was completely botched by the DA's office, the murder charges were dropped, and the perp with an extensive assault history (and previous victim statements who'd warned that this would happen), who'd murdered a man in a fight in the middle of downtown to which there were witnesses and video, got 8 months because "a judge determined state prosecutors didn’t prove (perpetrator) killed (victim) with malice, which led to the dismissal of a second-degree murder charge."

Not to mention that this trial is brought to you by the same county that brought you the release of Michael Peterson.

Knowing my city, I'm nervous to see how this plays out. 91% of Durham homicides in the first quarter of this year went unsolved, although the rate improved after some negative press. Since Deberry took office, our conviction rate for first degree murder is 24% versus statewide with 49% and neighboring Wake County with 61%.

If any of Faith's friends/family are on here, I apologize for the pessimism. I'll be furious and heartbroken if they don't do right by Faith. I hope that those of you saying that they are taking time to build a rock solid case and/or implicate others are right and I'm dead wrong.
