Ok, so they say investigators don't believe his disappearance was related to his work with a 'national security consulting firm?' Ok, ............

curious,
fran

PS... wonder how often they use this 'hostage rescue team' that touts as a 'counterterrorist unit,' for an 'ordinary Joe' kidnapping? Inquiring minds want to know. :)

Although Janssen commutes during the week to the Washington, D.C., area for his job at a national security consulting firm, investigators don't believe his disappearance is related to his work, Crabtree told WRAL.

The FBI describes its Hostage Rescue Team on the agency website as a national level counterterrorist unit, offering a tactical option for any extraordinary hostage crisis or other law enforcement situation in the U.S. The FBI says the unit, established in 1983, responds to the most urgent and complex FBI cases.

"I can tell you Mr. Janssen was targeted by a group as part of an elaborate kidnapping plot. Specific demands were sent to Mr. Janssen's family for the benefit of Kelvin Melton, an inmate at the Polk Correctional Institution in Butner, North Carolina," said Strong.

Strong said Melton was previously prosecuted by Janssen's daughter Colleen, who is an assistant district attorney in Wake County. Melton is serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole. The Associated Press reported it has spoken with federal law enforcement official, speaking on condition of anonymity because the person was not authorized to discuss an ongoing investigation, who said authorities are investigating the kidnapping as an act of retaliation linked to the gang the Bloods.

FBI: NC inmate helped orchestrate kidnapping

At 8:20 p.m., the FBI says a call was placed by Melton from the prison to a phone associated with the kidnappers in Atlanta. The two male callers appear to be discussing how to dispose of a body:

"The first spot we are checking out is close to the house."

"We want to make sure it's in a secluded area and the ground is soft so we can go 3 feet deep."

"Get a bag, put it over his head, and stuff something in his mouth."

"However you feel like doing it, just do it."

"Make sure to clean the area up. Don't leave anything. Don't leave any DNA behind."

Following the call, authorities tried to enter Melton's cell and he temporarily barred the door and smashed the phone. A few hours later, they located Janssen in Atlanta at the Forest Cove Apartments.

Boy! Melton is one scary dude.Frank Janssen is very lucky the FBI found him fast because they were close to killing him. I wonder what it is the prosecuter has of Melton's that he wants back so badly. It could be Melton had no real demands he just wanted to kill Mr. Janssen to punish his daughter. I pray this family does not have to be fearful of these people for the rest of their lives.

The complaints also allege the kidnappers stopped at a McDonald's in Lexington, S.C., on their way to Wake Forest and that a receipt from that McDonald's was later found on the floor at Janssen's home, where it was apparently dropped during the assault, the station reported.

How intriguing! I thought it was really strange how quickly the FBI got involved with a case about some random guy missing from a bike ride. Apparently there was a lot more to it than I originally thought!

I thought it was going to have to do with the job he had, didn't think about anyone else. But it was kept somewhat quiet, jmo. Hearing that there was physical evidence (receipt from McD's) and they were able to view surveillance from camera's there was very lucky. jmo
