No info on whether she was killed at location or elsewhere

Location was not obvious, was not visible from road

Water is not a pond but she was in a "body of water"

Reward is still $50,000

WWAY TV

Definitely heartbreaking. Even though she was in water, I hope enough evidence can be found on the van, on her, and around where she was found to catch this perp.

Summary from police chief's remarks - found in body of water. will use dental records to identify. Public asked to continue to pray, not spread rumors via social media, not make things up on social media and continue to reports tips.

FBI summary - POI not in custody. Where she was found was not visible from road. body of water - not use word "pond"

To clarify, he said there is no person of interest.

Additional info just shared:

- Where Hania was found not visible from road
- It was "not obvious" that there was a body in the body of water she was found
- Wouldn't call it a pond, just a "body of water"; don't know if it's just a pool of collected rainwater or not
I think this clears up a lot of questions of why they were unable to find her at the initial discovery of the vehicle.

Damn damn damn damn...this was the outcome I was expecting but not any less heartbreaking. :( Prayers to Hania's family, hope they can find peace. Even more so, hope the killer gets the death penalty and burns in hell for taking this beautiful angel. At a minimum, life without any parole and sit in a cell 23 hours a day for the rest of his miserable life.

bbm
Yes, it's damn damn damn time again. And we do hope and pray, but we know after "too many days" that we probably won't hear good news.
Don't worry about Life With Parole in NC -- no such thing. If someone is convicted of First Degree Murder, there are only two sentences:
1) Death Penalty
2) Life Without Parole - and "without parole" means just that.
Full stop.

NC does not have penalties like "40 years to Life," etc. Murders not judged 1st degree, or other crimes, are sentenced like 20--30 years, 10--12 years, etc., and usually the one sentenced is expected to serve 75% of the minimum, but this does not come into play with 1st Murder.

So heartbreaking. When they found the abandoned car so quickly, I really thought they might find her alive. Obviously time dashed those hopes.

Praying for Hania and her loved ones. Rest in peace, sweet girl.

I posted last night that I was worried she would be in a body of water. I'm literally sick on my stomach. Thought it may be stomach flu but maybe it's a visceral reaction. Rest In Peace sweet Hania. Her poor family. I cannot imagine. ❤️

I have followed all along dear Hania.
I'm so very sorry you are gone now.
There will be justice for you.
Rest in peace angel.

Presser notes 11/28/18

Police Chief Michael McNeill…
  • "We are absolutely devastated. I wish we had a different outcome for Hania’s family, for the community she lived in, and for the hundreds of LE officers and searchers who put everything they had in finding her and bringing her back alive.”
  • "We believe that we have found the body of 13 year old Hania Aguilar"
  • The body was found in a body of water off Wire Grass Rd in Robeson County
  • Today the State ME official said preliminary tests indicates the body they found is Hania’s
  • Final confirmation will be done doing a dental records comparison
  • “Please continue to pray for Hania’s family, and each other as the investigation continues.”
  • Asked the community and those on SM to stop spreading rumors
  • They’re not going to discuss any other circumstances around the body or condition of the body; they want the media and community to be respectful and do not ask about conditions of the body
  • ME will conduct autopsy to determine cause of death.
  • “Our work is not over. We will not stop. We will not stop until we find the person or persons responsible and we bring them to justice. We will not stop until we do that.”

FBI Senior Supervisory Resident Agent Andy de la Rocha…
  • "Our work is far from over. We need to find out how she died, who did this to her, and we have to bring the person or persons responsible to justice."
  • "Please call us if you have information to help. Don't post rumors on social media. Don't share speculation about this case."
  • "By putting things out there that are blatantly false, and that are not released by the Lumberton Police Department, the FBI, the SBI, the Robeson County Sheriff's Office, the North Carolina Highway Patrol, are false. They're misleading. They're simply inaccurate.
  • Last night after finding Hania, they processed the scene. They secured the scene very late last evening, because they wanted to get their eyes back on where she was found during daylight hours. Investigators and crime scene officials went back to Wire Grass Rd and recovered additional evidence, and made sure anything that was relevant was collected.
  • Asking again to call if anyone has video that can help determine when and how Hania came to be laid where the investigators found her yesterday.

Some notes from Press Q&A
  • Re: agents finding her there - both the FBI agents and the LPD detectives were in that area yesterday. There is a large amount of both private and public land that they've been searching since Nov 5. While LE was searching that area, they came upon the area where they found Hania.
  • Re: anything found at the crime scene that may help catch the perp - there is evidence that is both at the scene, there is evidence from tips from the public, evidence published as far as CCTV footage - to include what was found last evening, all of it will help piece together what happened to Hania.
  • The area they were last evening and today is not visible from the road.
  • No POI at this time.
  • Not able to determine how long the body was there.
  • Not able to determine how long she may have been with her captor(s).
  • Re: public's concern about someone still out there - reminded the public to always remain vigilant.
  • Re: suspect still in the area? - no comment
  • Re: what led to that area - 7-10 days ago they started targeting the area along Wire Grass Rd because a number of tips that came in through the tipline. That led them to ask people along Wire Grass Rd to check CCTV footage; it's a wide-open area, a lot of wet-land, wooded area, a lot of private land. It was a deliberate plan to get out there.
  • Re: was she killed there, or was body dumped - no info at this time if she was killed there, or elsewhere
  • Was her body easy to find, or was it buried under any debris - Not something that was obvious. Where she was was not visible from the road.
  • Not going to use the term pond; it is a body of water. Not formally a pond.
  • The reward is still $30,000.

Didn't the couple that was interviewed last night say that there is a swamp area back there, not a pond???? could that be the body of water they are talking about? IMO

Such crushing news for Hania's loved ones. This is tremendously saddening.

The community, including the school, have all wrapped their arms around this family and I believe with all my heart that they will continue to do so.

May Hania's family continue to hold each other close during this terrible, terrible time.

Rest in Peace beautiful Hania.

They stated that they had lots of tips about the road where she was found....begging for more tips

My heart is broken for this child and her family. Rest In Peace Angel.

During the PC they said there are a lot of wetlands (i.e. swamp, marsh) back there and where she was found would not be classified as a pond.
