SELMA – Police are asking for help locating a missing 84 year-old man. James Norman Batten was last seen on December 15, 2021. He was reported missing by his family on March 6, 2022 after they were unable to reach him.

Mr. Batten, who often goes by the nicknames of “Mose” and “Jimmy” was last seen on December 15 at his home on Madison Street in the Selma city limits. Officers are asking anyone who saw Mr. Batten in December, or anytime since then, to come forward.

Batten is 5 foot 10, 165 pounds, with brown balding hair, and brown eyes. He sometimes wears glasses.

Due to vision issues he no longer has a vehicle. He would regularly take a taxi to a local grocery store and immediately return home. A taxi company that Batten called for those grocery store trips said he hasn’t called them since December.

Family members said Mr. Batten, who is a US Army veteran, likes to keep to himself and there are no known locations he frequents. His cell phone was left behind at his residence, which police said was not disturbed.

Police Detective J. Vause said foul play is not suspected at this time. Batten has no known cognitive impairments.

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of James Norman Batten of Selma is asked to contact Detective Vause at the Selma Police Department at 919-965-8189.

84 Year-Old Selma Man Missing Since December

Mr. Batten is a introvert, that liked to keep to himself. He has no wife, no kids. He disappeared possibly the day of 12/17/2021. The front door to his residence was left unlocked, the house was very neat and clean, no signs of foul play inside of the residence.

Mr. Batten is also a Army Vet that had done a lot of covert operations in the past, but we have checked all hospitals, VA's, medical examiners with no success. Mr. Batten was known to walk around his subdivision, and walk to and from the local store.

No one in his family has seen or heard from him since 12/15/2021 and the family reported him missing on 03/06/2022

No cognitive impairment. Missing for a long time. Where could he be?

Perhaps he just became disillusioned with life and had enough?

MOO.

Missing for a year.

This story sounds like maybe he got hit on the road and died in the bushes or something. There are some thick woods along the roads near his home.

SELMA – Its been three years since a Selma man disappeared without a trace. James Norman Batten was last seen alive on December 15, 2021. At the time of his disappearance he was 84 years-old.

Selma Police Detective Sgt. Justin Vause said he reviews the case frequently but the disappearance remains a mystery.

James Batten lived a simple, quiet life and didn’t know many people. He kept to himself so it wasn’t unusual for him to go weeks without contacting his family, who did not live in the immediate area. On March 6, 2022, relatives could not reach Mr. Batten so they called police to conduct a welfare check at his home.

Police found his Madison Street home “neatly kept” and there were no signs of a struggle or anything being out of place. The front door was unlocked and his cell phone was inside.

This area where remains have been found appear to be about 8 miles from where Mr. Batten lived/was last seen. Authorities say it does appear the remains have been there for several years.
