An extensive search that includes drones, boats with sonar scanning and helicopters has kicked off in Bladen County where a Fayetteville man was reported missing from his camp site early Saturday morning.

Jesse Sgro, 23, of Fayetteville, was reported missing early Saturday, according to the state Division of Parks and Recreation. He was camping with a church group from Fayetteville at Singletary Lake State Park near Elizabethtown.

The 35,975-acre park is located in Bladen County on Highway 53, 10 miles southeast of Elizabethtown and six miles east of White Lake. It is open only for reservation by groups of 20 or more for camping, retreats and environmental education. Public access is restricted when groups have reserved the park.

Around 2:30 a.m. on Saturday, someone from the group noticed Sgro did not return to his cabin. The group’s leader was notified around 9 a.m., who then contacted park staff.

Sgro’s canoe was found just before noon on Saturday.

Sgro had previously been seen in the canoe alone. Officials reported finding the canoe in an upright position.

North Carolina State Parks is leading the search, which continued until it became dark Saturday night and picked up at 7 a.m. on Sunday.

The search includes more than 15 local agencies comprised of a K-9 search team, helicopters, boats with sonar capabilities, all-terrain vehicles, drones and people on foot.

“There is really just an incredibly team effort with so many agencies coming together to help out so quickly,” said Katie Hall, spokeswoman for the State Parks. “It’s really just a testament to the strong community bond in this area of the state.”

Hall said the search has been tricky because there is a lot of soft ground and much of the search is being conducted in the waterways.

Sgro is described as 5-feet, 6-inches tall and weighs about 125 pounds.

He was last seen wearing a white sweater with a gray chevron pattern, khaki pants and burgundy New Balance shoes.

http://www.fayobserver.com/news/201...ue-for-fayetteville-man-missing-from-campsite
Search efforts continued this morning to locate a Fayetteville man who went missing from a campsite in Bladen County on Saturday.

Volunteers, park rangers and law enforcement officers from 18 agencies are part of the search for Jesse Sgro, 23, who was reported missing from his cabin at Singletary Lake State Park near Elizabethtown on Saturday. He was camping with a church group from Fayetteville.

“Right now we’re doing a focused search in an area in the lake where he was seen,” said Katie Hall, a spokeswoman for the state Division of Parks and Recreation.

The 1,221-acre park is in Bladen County on N.C. 53, 10 miles southeast of Elizabethtown and six miles east of White Lake. It is open only for reservation by groups of 20 or more for camping, retreats and environmental education. Public access is restricted when groups have reserved the park.

Someone from the church group noticed Sgro did not return to his cabin around 2:30 a.m. Saturday. The group’s leader was notified around 9 a.m., and the park staff was contacted.

Sgro’s canoe was found just before noon Saturday.

Sgro had previously been seen in the canoe alone. Officials reported finding the canoe in an upright position, in the middle of the lake.

Crews kicked off the search Saturday, worked through Sunday and resumed this morning. North Carolina State Parks is leading the search, which includes a K-9 search team, helicopters, boats with sonar capabilities, air boats, all-terrain vehicles and people on foot.

Fayetteville police are assisting by using a drone to search the park.

Search for missing Fayetteville man at Bladen County lake enters fourth day
http://www.fayobserver.com/news/201...e-man-at-bladen-county-lake-enters-fourth-day
The search for a Fayetteville man who went missing at Singletary Lake State Park in Bladen County entered its fourth day today.

[...]

Searchers were hampered earlier by strong winds that prevented the use of a drone and helicopter, said Katie Hall, a spokeswoman for the N.C. Division of Parks and Recreation, which is heading up the search effort.

The winds made for choppy water conditions which prevented the use of sonar equipment, she said.

Conditions improved by 3:15 p.m., Hall said, and efforts resumed with the use of dive and sonar equipment as well as expanding the search to new areas.

Volunteers, park rangers and law enforcement officers from 18 agencies using K-9 search teams, helicopters, boats with sonar capabilities, air boats, all-terrain vehicles and people on foot have been looking for Sgro.

A little more insight into Jesse in this article.

Lead pastor Stacy Long says Jesse was just following a beloved tradition when he went missing taking the canoes out to watch the sunset.

“Every night that’s a tradition for four years,” Long said. “That’s what we did on Friday night. Jesse went out by himself and he often goes out alone to spend time with God. I was one of the last people to see him and he was singing. So he was in a really, really good place and really, really happy.”

What confuses me is it seems one person says his canoe was found in the middle of the lake, and another states that it was found on the side of the lake against some brush. Which is it? Perhaps faulty reporting...seems the account about it being against the brush on the side of the lake is more accurate.

Intriguing. Since the canoe was found at the edge of the lake, upright and presumbly with no water in it, I wonder if Jesse maybe paddled to the edge of the lake, exited the canoe and got lost in the woods trying to find his way back.

“Nothing. No signs. They have combed that lake," David said of the search efforts. "That lake is two miles long. It’s a half-a-mile wide. It’s 12 feet deep. They’ve had as many as 10 and 11 boats on there all stinking day and they haven’t found anything.”

David also addressed concerns that Jesse would run away, saying he would not abandon his family and that his life was going well.

I'd like to know more about his personal life marriage and new paint company. 40 people...1 of them knows something. Who was he dating or involved with? What kind of paint company?
