Scott has a lengthy criminal record, including convictions in Texas, North Carolina and South Carolina. Texas records showed he was convicted of evading arrest with a vehicle in 2005, and several months later, of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Which is why, IMO, his family has to keep up the ruse that "he didn't own a gun". Of course "he" didn't "own" a gun (legally), because they know he would not have been eligible to own a gun legally, because of his prior felonies.

And if he was in possession of a weapon owned by one of his family members, even if that family member purchased it legally, the family member could be convicted of straw purchase, and themselves be guilty of a gun felony. And if it's NOT a gun legally owned by a family member, it's STILL a huge big deal, because this convicted felon had an ILLEGAL gun in the household with children, which means his WIFE could be in a lot of trouble, because she knows he's a convicted violent felon (gun crimes).

His family HAS to keep saying over and over that he did not "own" a gun. The gun "has to" be a book, if you get what I'm saying.

Can felons own guns? Is this governed by state or federal law? Does this apply to only certain types of guns or all guns?

In 1934 the government passed a law banning any person who had been convicted of a violent felony from owning a gun. This was in addition to an existing ban keeping violent felons from owning machine guns - the new law basically said that violent felons couldn't own any type of firearm.

This restriction was expanded in 1968 to include all felonies (not just violent ones). This practice continues to this day - except in rare circumstances where your civil rights are "restored" (this is only a possibility in a few states), or until your felony is expunged, you are not eligible under federal law to legally own a firearm.

Ammunition

Many felons don't realize this, but the federal ban on owning a firearm also applies to any type of ammunition - if you are caught with just a bullet you are in violation of this ban and subject to another felony (this one federal, meaning a lot more jail time and less chance of a pardon).

Does this only apply to concealed weapons?

Actually this law applies not only to concealed weapons, but also to any firearm that might be in your home. In the United States, felons are not legally allowed to bear arms - this is a point of controversy because it means in essence that you cannot defend yourself if somebody breaks into your home.

How can you legally own a gun again?

The easiest way to regain your right to bear arms is to have your felony expunged. Some states, however, offer felons the opportunity to own a handgun again after a certain amount of time has passed from the successful completion of probation. This is rare and there are many states, such as North Carolina, where a felon can never again own a weapon.

BBM

He had a gun, that is pretty apparent. And an ankle holster, too, from reports. There will be lots of evidence to prove that, IMO, including DNA. He went BACK to the car to RETRIEVE the gun, then didn't drop it whan ordered to. That is extremely significant.

After watching #KeithScott video, family attorney says "there are some things to digest". @WBTV_News

He looks a little sheepish right now. He does not look enraged, as he would look if he had seen the victim clutching a book in his hands as he fell to the street.

Keith Lamont Scott's wife and other members of her family viewed two videos captured by police dashboard and body cameras that showed Mr. Scott's shooting death.

After watching the videos, the family again has more questions than answers.

When told by police to exit his vehicle, Mr. Scott did so in a very calm, non-aggressive manner.

While police did give him several commands, he did not aggressively approach them or raise his hands at members of law enforcement at any time.

It is impossible to discern from the videos what, if anything, Mr. Scott is holding in his hands.

When he was shot and killed, Mr. Scott's hands were by his side and he was slowly walking backwards.

It was incredibly difficult for members of the Scott family to view these videos, but as a matter of the greater good and transparency, the Scott family asks that the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department publicly immediately release both of the videos they watched today.

We will continue our own investigation into Mr. Scott's death. For those who wish to protest, we urge you to do so peacefully.

Interesting. They say it isn't clear what he has in his hands, but the police chief says he had "no doubt" that he was holding a gun. I would at least appreciate a still pic from the video.

Charlotte police shooting: Family says video is unclear

-- The family of Keith Lamont Scott, after watching two police videos of the shooting by a Charlotte police officer, said they couldn't say what was in his hands when he was killed. "It is impossible to discern from the videos what, if anything, Mr. Scott is holding in his hands," attorney Justin Bamberg said.

The family wants police to immediately release the videos to the public, Bamberg said.

The family says the video shows Scott acting calmly and non-aggressively on Tuesday. "When he was shot and killed, Mr. Scott's hands were by his side and he was slowly walking backwards," Bamberg said.

and here we go

Charlotte police chief: Shooting video won't be made public

CNN

Not ok. But then I thought society has seen enough of this stuff. (not this case. However , we clearly have a problem with LE in this country.

If any cop did not do anything wrong , or abuse their powers they should have no need to hide their videos.

We pay them. They are cival servants.

But everyone has a cell phone and films whenever they see cops dealing with anyone, so they wont be able to hide - those that do harbor ill feelings towards groups.

In this incident there was a gun. Sio why not release the video??

You watch how quickly this not releasing video spreads, I give till next week -

if ya aint got anything to hide .................

If they release the video they might have to charge the officer... Would they withhold it from the public to avoid moving ahead?

That's the only thing I can think of. For some reason they believe not releasing it will make this go away faster.

Reporter is interviewing a well spoken young man right now about why he is out there. He wants change. There is pain and hurt in the city. He says "our city is in shambles and it's not just one thing" Compares the city to a broken nose that needs to heal...then he turned political and the reporter went back to the news room.
