Aw Dockins "It hurts my heart" these four words just brought tears to my eyes. That's how I feel, my heart hurts so very badly! It seems as though our whole world is full of so much hate. :(

The professional agitators are calling for a boycott on white businesses. The police officer that fired the shots was African American. Interesting.
Judging by tweets, like the one I linked unthread, there are some who do not believe the officer wasn't white who shot Mr. Scott.

Appears that race is the issue for some. They don't even believe the cop who shot him was black. This makes me think that it's not LE vs. black lives, it's a race thing for some, but of course not all.

If you look at the numbers there's no denying it's a race thing. (Percentage-wise) Law enforcement kills more black citizens than white citizens. Period. But people will believe what they want to believe, I guess.

It's always amazing to me how little empathy I see after a shooting like this. A man is dead but the important thing is to place the blame on him, justify the LEOs' actions, condemn anyone who cries out for justice, and insist it's not about race.

Not even a moment of compassion - just pull out the same old script and start shouting.

Well, I save most of my compassion for truly innocent people, like the people who were driving on the highway and encountered the murderous rioters. I have a LOT of compassion for innocent bystanders.

Where my compassion starts to ebb away is when I find out the person killed by police willfully disrespected the law and the authority of police, and had extremely violent and dangerous behaviors and actions.

It's just a difference of perspective, I suppose. For some, the facts will never matter, and the criminal suspects are always "innocent, oppressed, and misunderstood victims", incapable of self control or lawful behavior.

I happen to think almost every person is capable of understanding the basic laws of society, and behaving in a civil and respectful manner, and capable of being law abiding.

Frankly, I'm shocked over and over when that seems to be a pervasive problem for some people! I have very high standards for my fellow citizens, when it comes to peaceful behavior. I think anyone, of any race, is fully capable of complying with laws and lawful authorities, and when they don't, it's a choice they make to be criminally antisocial. They don't get a "pass" from me because they are poor, or black, or brown, or blue, or white, or green.

No surprise there. They also believe he was armed with a book.

Which to me is just... I can't even describe it adequately. The first videos from the scene they were saying the Officer is black and that he was very upset after the shooting. This is the people that live there in that community and were filming. And the daughter that filmed... she was inside sleeping at the time it happened and she is the one that started the story about him reading a book while sitting in the car waiting and how he didn't own a gun.

Compassion isn't like money - you don't have to save it. You don't have to wait until you know all the facts either. In this case a man was shot while waiting to pick up his son from school. Why wait? Why not have some empathy now? What about for the son who was expecting to see his father when he got off the bus?

For me compassion doesn't have so many strings attached.

We learn a lot when we put ourselves in others' places. Keeping them at a distance and categorizing them as "other" teaches us nothing.

So their version is that this man was sitting in his car, minding his own business, reading a book, and a black officer walked up and shot him, for no apparent reason?

We live in Charlotte. My son is in the minority at a high poverty middle school. We talk about empathy and compassion for those that have different life challenges every day. Today, I had to ask him to be more compassionate than yesterday. I am white. We have many black friends. None of know how to fix this but we are talking more about painful topics around race, poverty and equal rights. My heart hurts for the family of Keith Scott and the officer that shot him. I am not judging this situation until the true facts are presented.

Why make this thread about race? Distract and deflect.

Without video or audio, without a weapon, without witness reports - I'm with you.

It's a symptom of a larger illness, but the specific facts have yet to be discovered.

I was speaking about the protesters and neighbors who believe that if a black man was shot, it had to be by a white officer. I don't deny that black men are killed by LE at a much higher rate than other races. I simply believe that for some this is a white vs black, and they refuse to believe that a black officer shot a black man in their neighborhood.

People believe if a black man was shot he had it coming. People are protesting saying this proves we should reintroduce segregation. There are a lot of misinformed people out there spouting off what they believe or how they think things should be.

I guess I don't see the relevance to the conversation here, but whatever.

You know, I live in the Charlotte area and I'm just flabbergasted that we've come to this. Not a single one of my black loved ones would ever resort to violence like that. They think it's foolish just like I do. Yes, we have a problem with racism in this country, and anyone who says otherwise is delusional. But take a step back and you'll see that the media is fanning the flames. Had a white cop shot a white guy with a gun, it would barely have been a blip on the 6:00 news.

Years ago a cop shooting a black man for any reason would have barely made a blip on the news, but thanks to people recording the incidents and activists calling attention to the issue we do hear about it. The riots are bad, but they are a symptom of a much larger issue - systemic racism in the USA.

I don't support the rioters. I don't think it's helping anyone. But I do believe they are angry and frustrated, and feel helpless and hopeless. It seems no matter what they do nothing changes. Even with the current focus on LE shootings of black people nothing is really changing - it's happening just as frequently and they're still getting away with it.

I wish they would cover all the great stories of LE and the community working together. There have been so many events this year with LE and citizens trying to find solutions to the problems they face. I cannot link every story that crossed my Twitter feed now, but it's numerous. There are racial injustices, but Charlotte isn't ignoring them, IMO. I want solutions, conversations, and actions to improve relations with LE. I also want accountability and punishment when indicated- from all involved. Charlotte is a good place with good people of all races. i truly believe there will be a fair investigation, and progress will be made looking ahead, although it will not bring Mr. Scott back.

The chief said officers were searching for a suspect when they saw Scott exit a vehicle with a handgun. He said the officers told him to drop the gun and that he got out of the vehicle a second time still carrying the gun.

"It's time to change the narrative, because I can tell you from the facts that the story's a little bit different as to how it's been portrayed so far, especially through social media," he said.
