There are a few interesting tidbits in this release.

Wake County judge to revisit whether to try Raleigh couple together on murder
Published: April 11, 2013 Updated 42 minutes ago

RALEIGH — A Wake County judge will reconsider whether to try a Raleigh couple together on accusations that they murdered a Kinston woman whose body parts were pulled from a Texas creek in July 2011.
<snipped>
Godwin also provided a glimpse of the defense she plans to use, saying her client has an alibi for the time of Ackerson’s death, but was coerced into helping dispose of the body.
<snipped>

Judge Don Stephens plans to hold a hearing on April 22 after the concerns raised in Superior Court on Thursday.

All portions respectfully snipped by borndem.

Wow, NCEast, what a newsy little piece of journalism -- thanks!

Hmmm. If Mz. Hayes had a good, solid alibi, why haven't she & her atty offered to rat out that so-and-so and take a lesser "after-the-fact" or whatever plea? Has that already been hashed around & turned down? Does AH want to stick it out to hope for a NG?? This doesn't click for me.

I have no wonderful feeling about her -- except possibly a teeny bit of pity for her choosing to live & procreate with him (don't they have a child together? I CRS) -- but I can see her being maybe scared of him and (if there is a child between them) wanting to keep her child safe and her somehow still loving him.

I want to know more.....

I feel the same way about her so called alibi. If she only helped dispose of the body I would think she would have been singing to every prosecutor in the DA's office long before now. And they do have a child who was only a couple of months old at the time of the murder IIRC. I am really looking forward to this trial and pray WRAL will stream it.
It's so good to be back on here with you Born!! Hope you are well. Looking forward to getting to know some of the others who are following this case too.

Hi again, East! We know already that WRAL plans to cover at least some of it.... that's a bit odd for them, isn't it? They normally go for the whole banana on a case such as this; plus, this one shouldn't run very long. I wonder if some other event is also on WRAL's list that might outrank it??? (I don't know of any other trial that would be going on at the same time in Wake County. Abaroa in Durham County should start 4/22/13, but that is Durham County.) And we know that Boz and Stephens have been covered live before. And WRAL does a very good job of having the day's testimony archived & available usually the same night of the court day that was filmed. We'll see what we will see!

And, East, I am well & a-doin' fine. Same here, I was excited to see your familiar name on this board again -- from way back to where it began, along with gracielee, diphi, sea-chiq, tlcya, Anon and other "been-here-awhiles."

I think the next mystery on this one is to see where the her vs. him thing is going. How solid is AH's "case" in the blame game against GH? Now it sounds like this trial may be severed into one for him & one for her. Has AH suddenly decided to testify against GH? One possible problem with that is that her infant is with GH's mother. That would give me pause if I were AH... Could be touchy. Watch & wait, I guess. Keep the faith, Babe!

I just found out this morning that the Abaroa trial begins 4/22. I had hoped to follow that one too but the Haze/Hayes case will win out if I have to make a decision. I have trouble using the last name Haze as I think it's just part of Mr.'s ego trip so I will probably stick to Hayes as was entered on his original birth certificate. I think Raven Abaroa is mean and wanted an easy way out--much like Young and Cooper since they all happened around the same time. I think both of these Hayes people have mental problems, serious mental deficits, which add another dimension and more interest to this case.
Dang!!! I still need to lose that 10 pounds so I can sit here and not move until this trial is over. I think I gained 7 pounds during the B. Cooper trial. Awful!

I saw this news yesterday. I'm not surprised that AH is blaming GH and saying she was coerced. But I don't believe her for a second. In my gut, I feel she's deeply instrumental in this murder, if not the "ringleader."

I really believe they should be tried separately b/c she's blaming him, and it's going to get confusing for the jury but more importantly, as Stephens said, could become prejudicial to the co-defendant (GH). She's far more cunning than her husband, IMO (which is totally my speculation, of course).

But I trust Donald Stephens' judgment and am grateful he's the judge for this case! He is the best.

You are very right about Judge Stephens. I am so happy he's on this case as I feel he will do everything by the book and at the same time protecting both of the Hayes' rights to a fair trial.

Greetz, Boods!!:seeya: It's so good to see you here on this case! We "been there awhiles" go here & there on various trials, and some of us take time away from the awfulness of a trial that we put our hearts & souls into regardless of he outcome. Then, we'll join up again on a good one. I have been keeping up with cases for Shaniya Davis, Jessica Ridgeway, several others, and the Jodi Arias trial/Travis Alexander slaying (unbelievable!), but I'll be back to watch this one.

And I, like you, am really glad we have our favorite jurist, Donald Stephens, to preside.

Your comments on AH are quite thought-provoking -- I hope the real AH is revealed for what she is & what she did. Certainly they both are just plain evil, each prolly goading the other to go farther & more evil. Grrrrrrr.

We'll all hang around & see what happens... So glad you're here!

Thanks for the updates! I can't believe this is finally going to trial. I was pleased to see Judge Stephens will be presiding. I remember him fondly from the Young trial (it took me a minute to figure out if he was Young or Cooper though - I knew I remembered that voice from somewhere!).

I didn't see Amanda looking at him too much - more of Grant looking over at her, but I turned it off before it ended. She will need a stylist before court. She needs a new hairdo for sure. :-)

Interesting about Grant sending her death threats. If true, it just goes to show he is a complete idiot.

Oh boy, CrimeAddict!! Another Wake Countian (a real word? not likely!) settles in for this one. Glad you're back here with some of the old gang! Let's just settle in and watch & discuss & sleuth what we can.

There are certainly not a lot (any?) fans of Grant Hayes around here. Oh, I just don't even like to look at him because of that arrogant smirk. I think Amanda doesn't look quite as addled as she did, but I have seen her only a couple of minutes. But yes, I agree, she needs a bit of hair improvement, but I don't know how much is available at the Wake County jailhouse.

It sounds like there's a fair amount of CE against them, so I don't know why we have to waltz this waltz -- and we may wind up waltzing it twice -- but they have a right to a fair trial, and IMO, they have nuttin' to lose. No way would the prosecutor's office offer or accept a plea less than 1st, so we're in it.

I am concerned for the Ackerson kids, though, and really the rest of them, too. Are there any legal documents having to do with custody of the Ackerson children? And from what I've read about Ackerson's dad and custody, it's a little unsettling, but that could all be false. IDK.

:great:Anyway, C'Addict, welcome, and let's set a spell. :seeya:

I've been away in Arias trial land.....thanks for the shout out borndem! It was Laura's case that brought me to WS, so she holds a special place for me.

I truly find it suspect that AH lawyer is saying she was coerced into her role of Laura's killing/disposal. Why didn't she talk to someone before now? And why didn't she have her lawyer object to trying them together? I see them both just as sneaky as the other. Something doesn't sit right with me about AH. I feel like she's going to try to use her gender & recent motherhood to "woe is me" herself out of guilt.

OFF TOPIC, ATTENTION MODERATOR, I've been off Websleuths for awhile living real life, but I need to mention, at least a half dozen times now, both on the Shaniya Davis thread and now this one, when I first log on to websleuths, it sets off my Webroot anti virus/anti malware/anti whatever security system. It says 'something has been detected' and I need to go through a couple scans to quarantine it and get a clean scan afterwards. I'm not a computer wiz or anything, but I follow the instructions and take care of it. This is the only site this has happened on, no other site I frequent sets off my anti virus. So could there perhaps be something lurkng here? It's happened to me now on both my desk top computer and my lap top. Two different computers, both with the non-free Webroot security my husband puts on all our computers.

Hi guys. < waving > Is this one going to be televised? Sorry if it's already been mentioned. I need to go back and read through the threads. Have been seeing on the news that wife wants to sever her trial......

  • #334
Did I hear Boz is on this one? I haven't been following since the crime was discovered. Just got back here now that the case has been in the news a lot.

  • #335
Glee -- Yes, Boz is on this one! He's first chair, and IINM, it looks like Becky Holt, 2nd chair, but I could be mistaken. She didn't speak & she wasn't on camera very much.

WRAL said they would stream this trial if the principals were willing. And Judge Stephens, Boz & Becky (if it is indeed Becky) have been there & done that, so we'll see. Oh, I hope so!

You know, upon further thought, how do you guys feel about this supposed life threatening letter GH supposedly sent AH?

My hinky meter is pegging.....don't they monitor jailhouse communication? I don't see how GH could've sent AH a letter, threatened her life, and no one else saw it?

Is there anyone here who is computer savy? Upon clicking onto the thread again, I got another red notice for rootkits & malware, had to do two scans to rid myself of whatever it is. This computer isn't even connected to any email accounts or anything. It's our general purpose desk top computer. My email is linked to my laptop and hubby's email is linked to his laptop. I can't figure out what's going on? This particular computer doesn't have much on it at all. The scans take less then a minute and a half. There aren't any stored files or anything, and Websleuths is the only site this ever happens to me?

I have not read much about this letter -- somehow I missed it, and I would love to know more about it -- but in another Wake County murder trial (Ryan Hare charged & convicted of the 1st degree murder of Matthew Silliman), a witness, also charged in the same murder, testified that prisoners could not send correspondence directly to another prisoner there in the Wake County jailhouse, but there is a way to get around it. She said you send a letter to someone & use a totally fictitious address, but you put the intended recipient's name & address for the return address. It takes a while for it to get to the right person, but it does. She said that was a very common way to do it -- so it can be done (there's always a way!).

Certainly I would think (don't know fer shure) that any mail to or from a prisoner can be examined & confiscated, but you know that & take the chance anyway...

The children are with Grant's mother, right? I remember she took them and she owns a daycare or something. So sad for those kids. What a mess their dad is. You know the mother will always defend her son, she probably brings them to visit him if she can.

I live in Garner, about 15 mins from the courthouse.. I could totally go to court, I am nervous about it though.. I hope its just streaming so i can watch it here. My son is out of school in June and July anyways so that would be hard to get away for more than a couple hours.
