NC - Lauren Hugelmaier, 29, stabbed to death, Raleigh, 1 Sept 2017 *Arrest*

bbm me neither. But maybe he didn't love her?

Exactly. Not wanting to go near her is strong evidence he didn't love her and killed her deliberately IMO. Even if this was an unplanned rage or drug-induced killing, by the time he called 911 after her blood dried he would have been desperate to check for signs of life and not just assume from a distance that she was dead.

Is she still alive?

Good question. I hope so. She was alive as of October 2014 when she filed for divorce while living in another state.

How long does blood take to dry?

What's really curious to me is that the funeral story mentions her being a faithful member of a Lutheran church (fairly liberal denomination)- and he is from a Bible Baptist (fairly conservative to very fundamental) church. (This is not meant to be taken in political context)

My husband was a pastor for many years, and the chances of a Bible Baptist PASTOR marrying an active Luterhan are...well, let's just say it's unusual. Also, why was she not a member of HIS church? Because, as much as we'd like to think otherwise, being a pastor's spouse or child means YOU are in the ministry too.

I've only known one spouse who went to a different church than her clergy husband - and that was 30+ years ago and they were strange to begin with.

Just an observation.....

And also, even today, in very many southern Baptist churches, the boards and congregations would frown on hiring a pastor that has been divorced. I know that may not hold true for a lot of the country, and I am not passing judgement, but trust me when I say I live here, and I go to a Baptist church.....JMO

"Matthew's family and everyone at my firm really send our condolences to the young lady who died. It's a very tragic situation, sad and tragic," Cheshire said. "At the same time we have to ask everyone to withhold judgment in this particular case until we know more and we're able to develop more. There's a lot to this story I believe will be told in the future."

Friends say Matthew Phelps had recently become very dark as evidenced by recent posts to an Instagram account, but neighbors remained in shock.

Thanks for starting this thread -- it's here in Raleigh, NC -- I was reading more in the local paper today, & heard his 911 call -- this could turn out to be interesting. SMH. His relatives. who are not in this area, have lawyered him up with a biggie in criminal law -- Joe Cheshire and another, Elliott Sol Abrams.

MP's Instagram. Not sure if it's been posted already.

He describes himself...hmmmmm...

Matty Phelps

I'm just a pitiful anonymous, drifting into the abstract, and I can't seem to tell if I am dreaming anymore.

His most recent post in July is disturbing to say the least.

FWIW, MP has retained a couple of the best defense attorneys in North Carolina. Joe Cheshire has been lead attorney in several high-profile cases, including the defense of the wrongly-accused Duke Lacrosse players, and the lead lawyer for Greg Taylor, who was exonerated after serving 16 years for a murder he didn't commit, among many others, and he has been named the Top Lawyer in North Carolina by SuperLawyers.com for three years in a row.

Yeah, no. Corididan does not cause violent behavior. I am guessing the authorities will find a motive. I was just thinking how often Raleigh is mentioned in murders lately. There was the couple who killed the guy's ex-wife and brought her body to Texas, the Google guy who may have been innocent in the murder of his wife, and the guy whose best friend since junior high killed his wife. Weird, because Raleigh isn't a gigantic city.

Raleigh's 2016 population is right at half a million within the city limits -- it's in what we call the Triangle, which consists of Raleigh, Durham & Chapel and the Research Triangle Park --

Raleigh is home to North Carolina State University and is part of the Research Triangle area, together with Durham (home of Duke University) and Chapel Hill (home of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill). The "Triangle" nickname originated after the 1959 creation of the Research Triangle Park, located in Durham and Wake counties, among the three cities and their universities. The Research Triangle region encompasses the U.S. Census Bureau's Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill Combined Statistical Area (CSA), which had an estimated population of 2,037,430 in 2013.[SUP][10][/SUP] The Raleigh Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) had an estimated population of 1,214,516 in 2013.

That 911 call will kill his defense IMO.

But he made it a point to stress to the 911 operator that the blood on him was already dried. Thus, he's made an excuse that his stabbing fit happened awhile ago before the call to 911.

It sounds very pre-meditated to me. What a big fat crock. I'm not even giving him the benefit of the doubt. I wonder if there's life insurance (I bet yes) and how many women on the side he had. He reminds me of Raven Abaroa for some reason I can't explain.

In the obituary for Lauren, her family didn't even mention his name. Those poor people!

bbm

Her obit says she was an auditor with Quintiles, so she may have had a life ins. policy through them -- it's fairly common with good companies -- and, just being married, insurance agents can be at the doorstep as soon as the honeymoon is over, so they may have purchased one. At their ages, policies are not very expensive.

Thanks for posting this. It's just so inconsistent for what I would think a Baptist pastor-in-the making would publish. NIN is pretty dark...

IMO that July IG post doesn't seem that dark, just a shout out to Trent Reznor's music. However, unless a bunch of posts have been deleted, it is extremely odd that he went from having what was practically an instagram-themed wedding to zero posts after about two months (broken only by that one July post). It had been a constant stream of posts prior to the January 2017, after that, virtually nothing.

Maybe it was just deleted. Otherwise, it could be telling.
