Fifteen years have passed since any of Lillian Lawren Nance’s loved ones have seen her, but that doesn’t dampen her mother’s confidence that somewhere, somehow she’s still alive.

Nance was 32 when she went missing June 20, 2001. She was last seen leaving her mother’s old residence on the 1200 block of Sunshine Street in Gastonia.

Everlene Nance’s hunt for her daughter has taken her across the city and as far south as Georgia. Four presidential elections and a decade and a half later, there are still few answers to the woman’s disappearance.
Markeveus accepts that his mother wasn’t a perfect person. He lived with his grandmother. His mom had problems with the law, once spending nearly three years in prison for child abuse, drug possession and assault inflicting serious injury.

Still, Markeveus says his mother tried her best as a single parent, and one of her requests helped drive him. Even after transferring from Hunter Huss High School and taking up football, he just didn’t want to go to class some days.
Markeveus finished high school in part because it’s what his mother wanted. He’s since had three children.
Lillian Nance’s missing person poster describes the woman as a black female 5-foot-4 inches tall, 130 pounds with brown eyes and black hair. It also lists an 8-inch scar extending from her left shoulder blade to her left arm, marks her family says are the fault of an abusive boyfriend.

Everlene didn’t trust him, and when Lillian went missing she wondered if he could be at fault.
Though Lillian Nance’s mother and sister, Carolyn, insist they believe Lillian Nance is alive, she’s legally been deemed dead.

Details of Disappearance
Nance's family members last saw her in the late afternoon on June 20, 2001, walking away from her mother's former residence in the vicinity of the 1200 block of Sunshine Street in Gastonia, North Carolina. She left with a male friend, saying she was either going to the store or going home. She never arrived home and never contacted her family again, although she was sighted in Gastonia on July 2.

Nance lived with a friend on Avon Street at the time of her disappearance. Her mother stated she rarely left her hometown and had no reason to walk out of her life. Her family reported her missing in August.

About a year after Nance went missing, her mother heard she had been sighted in Atlanta, Georgia. Nance's mother traveled to Atlanta seven times to look for her daughter. People there said they had seen her and that she was going by her nickname, Libby, but the sightings were never verified and Nance was never located.

Foul play is suspected in Nance's case; police believe she was murdered. A possible suspect is the man she was dating at the time of her disappearance; her family stated he regularly beat her. He still lives in the Gastonia area and hasn't been publicly identified.

Nance was declared legally dead in 2014; her family had this done so they could collect her life insurance. Her disappearance remains unsolved.

"Time has not brought optimism to Markeveus Nance.

Thursday marks 18 years since his mother, Lillian Nance, walked away from her grandmother’s home on Sunshine Street. She was with a male friend and headed home that June day in 2001, they thought. Nobody in Nance’s family has heard from her since. Police say she was last seen on July 2, 2001.

Markeveus, an only child who was 16 at the time, has held out hope for years his mom would one day make a safe return. Those hopes dim as more time passes without an answer. “You still try to think positive about the situation, but you got to face reality,” Nance said. “It’s been so long. Something happened.”"

Gastonia mom went missing 18 years ago, son searches for answers

"Her mother, Everlene Nance, said there was hope initially. Police had leads, with information about an abusive boyfriend and other clues. But soon, authorities realized they needed more help...

It’s been unbearable, really,” she said. “It’s been horrible. Like a nightmare that won’t go away.”"
