Around 6:45 a.m., officers with the Rocky Mount Police Department responded to a home in the 3500 block of Hawthorne Road, where firefighters were working to extinguish a car fire.

Photos show a car engulfed in flames in front of a home. Some neighbors say they heard the car's alarm go off around 6:30 a.m., followed by a loud boom.
“The preliminary fire investigation discovered the fire originated inside the vehicle’s passenger compartment,” the news release said. Police later said the fire started in the passenger area of the SUV.
RIP Linda.
ETA: Lexus RX. Car was parked on the grass in front of her home, not on the driveway.

From WRAL:

"Brown's husband said his wife's keys and purse are still inside their home."

I hope more information is forthcoming.

The WRAL story has been updated, same URL, new video.
That is a very strange place for the car to be, not only on the grass, but on the opposite side of the house from the driveway. Something is not right here.

I don't understand what's happened here.

Parking alongside the driveway in the grass, maybe they had people over the night before and the driveway got full?

Keys and purse in the house though is more than a little odd. If she didn't intend to drive the car, what was she doing in it? What could be stored in the glove compartment that would cause this kind of fire?

Was she found in the drivers or passenger seat, do they say?

Edit: the fire started in the "passenger compartment" per the article. What does that mean, exactly?

Maybe killed, thrown in car, start fire in glove box?

Maybe another possible self-immolation suicide? I wonder when the last time her husband saw her was. Did she come home drunk late in the night and that's where the car ended up?

Well... it says her key and purse inside. So she didn't just arrive and was not just leaving.

Also, this:
Based on a preliminary investigation, the fire started inside the vehicle’s passenger compartment, Jackson said.

An autopsy is going to be performed to confirm the cause of death, Jackson said.

Fire investigators and the police department’s Criminal Investigations Division are conducting a probe, Jackson said.

That set the vehicle on fire and killed her? I just don't know. She recently retired as a healthcare worker. I will be very interested in the autopsy. RIP, pretty lady.

I think 'passenger compartment' means 'not in the trunk / in the seating area'

Did she leave the car there or did someone else move it?

What was in the passenger seat? If she left her keys and purse in the house, chances are she went out to the car to retrieve something. What was it? Was she planning something that possibly backfired on her? Just too weird to have a simple explanation.

I’ll be interested to know if an excelerant was used and what it was.

Anyone aware of any kind of recall was issued for that car?

Looks like a 2nd generation RX, 2004-2007, either 330 or 350. Part of the grille is on the ground, firefighters would've pulled it off to reach the hood latch. Looks like the engine area was involved minimally, if at all.

I know I know. I just want it to have been some terrible accident.

I find this difficult to believe. Her car was facing the road. If she was drunk there is no way she would have executed a more complicated parking job than simply pulling in.
