All good thoughts about her being with a relative but there are completely legal ways to do this if it's necessary! Relatives can get kinship guardianship over minor relatives. Parents can voluntarily relinquish their parental rights either to a relative or an adoptive family. In foster care and adoption, there can be formal mediation with a mediator where the parent relinquishes their rights and in exchange the adoptive family agrees to provide them pictures every year, letters, a certain amount of contact.

The trend is to really help parents place their children in safe and loving homes when they can't parent themselves. These issues are always sensitive but I think it's important when we see these very sad cases come up that parents know there are options for them, even when their children are older. There are plenty of families approved to adopt older children. Taking these steps before someone gets hurt is so important.

ETA: All of this to say, if she were with a relative, her parents wouldn't need to hide it from the police. They could simply say she's now living with her aunt while we figure out what's in her best interest. LE would contact Madalina and her aunt to confirm and that's it. So unfortunately I think we have something a lot worse here.

I'm also curious what they were burning ?
Just yard debris ?
If it was items like Madalina's clothing or photo albums ... :(

Outside of people Madalina would've interacted with aside from family, did the neighbors see her outside at all ?
Theoretical question.

Sorry the site is glitching for me today.

Are there other relatives/friends of the mothers' or the stepdads, who have interacted with Madalina and noticed she stopped responding ?
It seems odd that no other person seemed to have missed this child.
It's possible that no one missed her, if there aren't any close relatives or friends of the mom and stepdad, but most people have connections !

So, just saying -- and my .02.

This may have been asked/reported already sorry if that is the case. Who was the last person to see her on 11/23? Obviously we can't take these peoples word on anything right now so is the school saying she was there on 11/22 or 11/23? I would like to know who saw her last other then these people. IMO

Considering the reports of burning were after police were contacted, I fear that it is evidence.

The names on the stockings are not blocked out in the photo on FB. The format for those two are the same, and are different from the other three. My guess would be pets or family that sometimes visits during the holidays. With my limited knowledge, they do seem to me to be names that are more associated with the mother’s language/ culture than with the step-father.
Good point. The stepdad's Facebook does say he speaks Romanian & Italian. One of the names is derived from a Roman name. The other's origin is Italian.

ETA: the name Madalina appears to be Romanian as well

I’m a bit behind on this story but I agree with what a lot of folks have said. The parents did not report her missing to the school resource officer, they admitted to him they didn’t know where she was when he showed up putting more pressure on why their child hadn’t been in school. After so many days they ran out of excuses.
This is not going to end well.
I read that on here or on a FB post, but I have not seen any news story that states that. Do you have a link?

Quite possibly and that could be the reason they arrested the step-dad. Maybe to make her feel safer to talk.
Or to get something out of her/scare her into cooperating, if she isn’t a victim as well. MOO

The houses are close to each other, it’s a subdivision. Open burning more common in rural 1.5 acre lots out in the country. Someone burning in that backyard would get the attention of the next door neighbor, the back yard is small.
And if it’s a corner lot, people coming into the neighborhood would notice a backyard fire. Someone would be on NextDoor complaining or calling the HOA. JMO

The rain is forecasted to start on Wednesday with a bit of a flurry perhaps on Friday morning then below normal temps over the Christmas weekend.

Yard waste is picked up every other week.

IMO, the mother will fess up to whatever happened to the little girl. This won't take long. That's her biological child and they've only been married for around 5 years. One of them will flip on the other one soon for a plea deal.

That neighborhood doesn't have HOA or if they do, it's not strict. I've actually seen burning there before. Cornelius is a very nice area but that particular area is a little sketchy. They aren't conducting any search parties which I find unusual.

Backyard isn't really that small. It's not deep but it's pretty wide. The one neighbor wouldn't have a good view of whatever they were burning.

…investigators took pictures outside the home, and collected more evidence inside. They also towed a car from the family’s garage, and brought in a canine unit. Investigators told WCCB News they were there to conduct another thorough search to make sure nothing is overlooked.

Authorities say Madalina’s parents went to Bailey Middle School Thursday and told a school resource officer the girl was missing. Friday afternoon, only WCCB News was on the scene at the girl’s Cornelius home as investigators with the FBI and SBI spent hours digging in the ground in her backyard, and searching for evidence inside the home. Neighbors stood by and watched in disbelief.

“I’ve lived here my whole life so I’ve never seen anything like this,” says Sydney Capps, a neighbor and social worker. She says the entire neighborhood is baffled by Madalina’s disappearance.

“It’s odd that it seems like she went missing back in November, and it’s just now being reported,” Capps says.

Cornelius Police did not say if they found anything of importance during their search of the girl’s home, but they did say they are still searching for her.

It appears the one neighbor if standing on his/her deck could very easily see something burning. Has it been reported on MSM on what was reported burning? I think it could be visible IMO.

I really want to think Madalina is o.k. and was given to a relative or close, trusted friend.
The problem with that theory is a good person would have contacted the authorities by now !
And whatever happened, her mom and stepdad were willing to be arrested, rather than speak out ... as if they know what occurred and are hiding something !
:(

Any chance this could be a stockholm syndrome situation or at least used as a defense for the mom? IMO

At this point I feel like not enough is publicly known to have any real bearing on mom’s mental fitness, but seeing as though she chose not to report her child missing and that she’s been arrested without being able to produce evidence of where her child might be, she’s definitely not acting like a mother of sound mind IMO

I've seen things about what it was but it sounded like speculation. I can't see that the neighbor even has a deck. Looks like a fence, bushes and a pergola.

In your post #253 a picture you posted appears to me that the house next door is a bi-level with a deck (2nd floor). I could be wrong. IMO
