Mayor, wife murdered in Edgecombe County home; 2 charged

A missing person report turned into a gruesome discovery in a small Edgecombe County town.

Keith Earl Williams, 25 of Tarboro, has been charged with first-degree murder in the deaths of Leggett Mayor Gary Skelton and his wife, Jackie Skelton.

A second person, Mitchell Brinson, 18, of Tarboro, is also charged with first-degree murder.

The couple was found dead during a welfare check Thursday evening at their home in the 7800 block of NC 33 NW.

Wow, this was solved in less than 8 hours! That’s amazing. I am thinking there must have been some connection between the accused and the victims. DNA would not come back this quickly, although I wish technology would advance so that it could!

DNA wouldn't come back so fast, but fingerprints could. I don't think there is any connection whatsoever. One of the suspects just released from prison, so his information would be on file.

I live 8 miles from where this happened. The wife was a co-worker. There is now a third person arrested
