GUILTY NC - Melissa Huggins-Jones, 30, murdered in her Raleigh home, 14 May 2013

 • #901
Well, here's his NCDPS mug shot. He is in :jail: at Central Prison in Raleigh, NC, right now. Prolly undergoing at least some version of a health & mental check, etc., etc. It will be a couple or three weeks before his record is complete and he is placed into the regular prison population, but here's a link FWIW at this time:

viewpicture.do

He is housed in Administrative Segregation at the moment -- this is usually done with new entrants, even if they have been there before -- to undergo the placement preliminaries , as he has done before in NCDPS.

I was sitting next to (state witness) Clint M today at a computer-related thing and of course we chatted about the trial. I gave him a high-five for his stellar work.

Borndem: Then, just an hour ago or so, I ran into someone from the Town of Cary who I first met during the Cooper murder case. She was telling me that Det George Daniels retired and Det Jim Young is now lead detective. I think this happened awhile ago, but I haven't actually seen her in a long time, so it was still 'newish' news to me. The moment I said, "McDreamy" she started laughing. She of course knew. They alllll knew.

Thanks for the update -- yes, I remember McDreamy. You had said, while another tuff trial was going on, that McD was a bit aloof -- very serious. I think we WS fans all knew that he was doing his best to do well in the Cary P.D. And it looks like he has. I also recall how impressed I was with Det. Daniels -- I still remember his time on the stand in that trial. He was smart, to the point, no kidding-around, and awesome, IMO. Congrats to Jim Young -- I'm sure he has worked his cute azz off to get there.

And yes, I'm sure they allll knew!!! :D We needed the few light moments our banter about Det. Young gave us during that trial of that rotter B.C. Grrrrrr.

:)

No it was during the Cooper case that I mentioned his aloofness. Some detectives are more personable than others though I think they're all a bit aloof as a tendancy. I snicker at the McDreamy thing because it was such a funny "art imitating life" situation, especially how various Wake County peeps were following along at WS at that time and reporting back what they read (or teasing their detectives, as it were). I wasn't even the one that started referring to him as 'McDreamy.' It was Lyndyloo, I believe. But anyway... it remains a funny memory and there are various Town of Cary folks who were in on the nickname joke. </snicker>

I was referring to the Cooper case, but I guess I was wandering... I think my saying "another" kinda made a mess...:blushing:

Anyway, like I said, we needed a bit of lightness and humor during that one, for too many reasons. And I seem to remember Lyndyloo naming him as well. I LOLed on that one -- I remember. And we did poke you a time or two about it -- but you saw him in person!! (But no autograph!)

And McDreamy did a lot to help nail him... And The Bad Guy will be outta here soon enuff.

By the way, NC, Raleigh, Cary, etc., folks, I am watching our Boz single-handedly prosecute Jahaad Marshall for the "Oakwood Home Invasion" case -- no murder, but a shooting causing paralysis and a sexual attack -- the crimes occurred in the winter of 2012/2013. On WAT.

 • #907
I wondered what Boz was up to these days… thank you for including that info, Borndem! I'll have to tune in.

 • #908
Wait... that retrial (the one that Boz prosecuted) actually occurred in 2014. Borndem, you must be in the wayback machine!! ;)

 • #909
Yes -- I am in the wayback machine -- I didn't mean to imply that it was happening now --although I didn't make it clear that it was an "old" trial.

I just was looking for it since I had not seen it when it was taking place & I found it on WAT. Sorry, Mad -- I'm hoping that we'll see Boz again soon -- he's sharp & his fan club is still around, I'm thinking. :)

Well, it looks like convict Travion Smith has found a home for a while, Sleuthers. He is now housed at Scotland CI, away from his murder bud, RA, who is still at Central. Glad they are not in the same :jail:.

He is in Regular Pop. We'll see how long it takes him to get a "Fighting" or "Involvement w/gang or STG" infraction, either of which will result in a mini-hearing in prison. This will get him inmate creds as well as prolly 60 days in Admin Segregation. I'm bettin' it will happen within the next 30 days. He's got a quick temper, apparently, and he won't back down from anyone, IMO. Plus, he needs those tuff Piru creds.

That was indeed a quick placement. Perhaps because their records on him were still fairly recent -- and, IMO, because RA is there. Dunno.

Yep - Laurinburg, NC -- Lots of Presbyterian Scottish heritage folks down there -- also lots of "good ole boys," too. Not far from where I grew up -- dated a guy from there in high school. Also home of St. Andrews University -- the first college (at the time) that was totally handicapped/physical-disability accessible. Beautiful campus.

The killer prolly won't like those good ole boys very much... :D

He'll manage, as they all seem to. I'm sure there is some gang affiliation there. All prisons have some gang activity of some kind, so he'll find one and that will be his new 'family.' At least he won't be a danger to free society anymore, and that's all anyone can do.

Hi Skittles!!

I was thinking about you, wondering if you were following this case. :happydance: Hope all is well.

Thank you for posting the Wade Smith article. I'm off to give it a read.

Hey, Madeleine74, I hope you are well, too. I was thinking of you the other day while watching the People vs. OJ Simpson series--I remember how closely you said you followed that trial. It's good to see you and other locals here.

As for this trial I followed the news reports but didn't watch the streaming coverage.

I thought it was an interesting trial. Here is a link if you want to look at it. https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=travion+smith+trial

Thanks, Skittles, for the link -- I had seen it this morning, and I planned to read it, but forgot about it till I saw your post.

Wade Smith is a very fine man. A true defendant's defender, but everything is on the table -- no hidden stuff and all is above board with them -- but they do like to win.

His argument is well-written, and his points are good. As long as LWOP is LWOP, it does ensure that the prisoner will die in prison. I don't think the DP has ever been much of a deterrent -- that's not how I view why it should be used. It is the only punishment we have that comes close to letting the punishment fit the crime -- and it doesn't come all that close, but it's all we've got.

There are crimes, however, that are so cruel and heinous that the specter of the Death Penalty is merited. Many of us remember little Teghan Skiba and the atrocities that were done to her; we remember little Shaniya Davis being given over to her killer in payment for drugs, as if she were a jacket or a pair of shoes. LWOP in those cases, he!! no.

Final suspect in murder of Raleigh mom enters plea
The last suspect in the 2013 murder of a Raleigh mother appeared in a Raleigh courtroom Monday and pleaded guilty to accessory after the fact to first-degree murder.

Prosecutors say Sarah Rene Redden, 21, acted as a lookout while Ronald Anthony and Travion Smith stabbed and beat 30-year-old Melissa Huggins-Jones to death in her North Hills apartment in May 2013. Huggins-Jones' 8-year-old daughter found her body.

While Redden did not allegedly take part in killing Huggins-Jones, she was charged with murder for her role in the crime.

As part of a plea agreement, the murder charge was dismissed. Redden also pleaded guilty to two counts of breaking and entering.

Superior Court Judge Paul Ridgeway sentenced Redden to 54 to 77 months in prison on the accessory charge. He suspended sentence on the breaking and entering charges.
