Hey everyone, I need your help.

While awaiting the trial of the people who hurt Shaniya, I thought it would be a good idea to try and establish a playground in her honor. If you'd like to see a playground established in Shaniya's memory, please write/email/call:

In fact, I wish there would be a playground movement all across the USA.
I'd be thrilled to see a 'Shaniya Bill' passed in Congress that had nothing to do with anything at all except playgrounds for children- playgrounds in honor of all of the children who our hearts have broken for.

I'm new to this thread. It's very heart wrenching and so sad. I just sent an email about the playground.

In defense of DSS, I work at a Foster Care Agency. I work with this state's version of Child Services.

There is so much you can't do as a Child Service worker. You can visit the home many times. It doesn't mean the door will open to you, nor does it mean that if it does, that a person on that day or that week will have their lives together. It doesn't mean that the next day, the next week, the next hour that things won't be bad.

Most states don't have enough well trained, well paid staff in place. It's one of the highest burnout jobs there are, and for good reason. Case workers are often paid poorly, overworked with many cases. And in any case, one can't force a parent to open a door, unless you have just cause, and are accompanied by police with a warrant, to break down the door.

DSS always becomes a scapegoat. While something should have been done, it is very often difficult to do it in cases where proof can be sketchy. You can't remove a child unless there is 'due cause' which means the child is in danger, harms way, not being taken care of. Did no one report the cig burns on this little one?

It sounds as though Bio dad may not have known what was going on. If he worked a great deal, if he was 'distanced' from his children, and it sounds like he was, he might not have had the time or energy to really put into looking into what was going on. If she was in Foster Care in most states, there would have had to be an investigation into where the child was placed, and with whom. It's sad that this little one was put into such a terrible situation. She looked like such a sweet little girl, this is so wrenching. I'm going to say a prayer for her today, and that this not happen to other little children.

One of the aspects of my job I love....I work as a substance abuse counselor at an agency, is to work towards seeing parents are in treatment, and if they aren't, oftimes they do not get to reunite with children....

I completely understand where you are coming from. DSS is so often completely overwhemed and undersourced and...just hands tied.

And then sometimes they just don't do their job. Unfortunately I think Shaniya fell victim to both.

here in New York, for 2 agencies I know, Jet blue and Kaboom! built a playground for them. (I know, one of them is on the grounds of an agency I have clients in!) I am wondering if they could be approached to help in this?

That could maybe work out of Fayetteville because both of those have interests in the Fayetteville area.

Okay....so I have a bit of a rant to go on.

Went to leave a pumpkin for Shaniya at where the bulbs are planted- which are right by where she was found.
NC is currently in major "elect-politicians" mode and so there was a politicians sign stuck literally right there. I yanked it out (sorry, Mike Womble, Commissioner District 3) which I am pretty sure is against some law, but I don't really care, because I thought roadside 'memorials' were against the law too, and how do political signs not fall into this category?? But that's neither here nor there, I suppose.

It DID get me to thinking: Does Mike Womble Commissioner for District 3 know who Shaniya was?

Ok, off rant now.

(Disclaimer- I have absolutely no idea who this particular politician is, so nothing against him.)

But the point of this rant: maybe I should just email every local politician running for something right now and say- I will vote for you, if you remember Shaniya, and you will build a playground in her honor.

Okay, totally off rant now because I looked up politician whose sign was stuck on Shaniya's bulbs, and I'd probably vote for him regardless. *sigh*

But I still think it might be a good idea to email NC politicians and ask that they support a playground in Shaniya's memory.

And I wish instead of that sign, there was one that said "Remember Shaniya. Never again."

Also, I was thinking- there are a couple of big corporations with plants located in the Sanford area. Maybe they would be willing to help. They are some of the biggest employers in the area.

Can't find anywhere else to post about Shaniya, but went Halloween costume shopping with my grandaughter today and thought of her. Brought tears.

She really touched my heart...hoping and praying for justice for that innocent angel...
