not my kids,

Hmm, doesn't seem like a cruel joke to me but I think I do understand what you are saying. Could seem that way to some. The vigil at the trailer park bothered me also, but I also think I understand how those (innocent) residents might feel. Graveyards also bother some. Guess I'm one of those that find comfort in knowing that at least she was found...and for me, a reminder everyday of how just the slightest extra bit of attention might save or change a childs' life.

I'll just keep putting flowers there, if only for the countless volunteers (and dogs) who beat through miles of kudzu looking for her. I know many of them drive by and think the same thing.
And truthfully- there is my one other concern- that there is no memorial not for the reasons you specified (which I do understand) but because she was neglected, and black, and appears to have come from a drug-ridden/trailer-park environment where children simply fall off the radar more easily.

I may not like the memorials themselves, but it does seem sad that there isn't anyone that has put one there. I couldn't understand the one in the trailer park, and that one sickens me just because if she never would have gone there, there would be no need for memorials.
I do see the other side of it, and for many people it is something that they feel compelled to do, and it least it is something to remind people.
Flowers I can handle, but I have always felt a little odd about stuffed animals and things like that.

Kiki, if I have offended you, please let me know.
I only asked because in the notes I did on last nights show, I only put a very condensed version, like you did in your post and I wanted to make sure that no one was working off that little snippet that I posted.
I am sorry if I made anyone angry, but anything I type is personal opinion and doesn't matter to anyone anywhere anyway.

What was previously posted was a "condensed" version.

Snipped.....
LOCKHART: She liked to color. She was a typical little girl. She had a little tomboy in her. So she was learning how to ride her scooter. Running into the cars, of course, scratching them up. Just real energetic. She loved to play dress up and Barbie and have girl time. Like my son said, you know, she`s really welcome into women, not as welcome into men, of course.

Patty...you are torturing me here; having to relive this. A father saying in front of millions of viewers..."not as welcome into men, of course." In terms of emotional intelligence, he's below zero.

No, you twisted that statement a bit. I said I wasn't going to hang her for it. Speaking to my own tendency to go a bit overboard when I believe something. MY tendency, not yours. If I had meant you or anyone on the board, I would have said it. If that was disparaging, it was disparaging towards myself.
I respect your opinions and I always have . The whole board stops when you post, because we all respect you and pay attention to what you have to say.

And I do believe that the idea that the child welfare system will react when called is an illusion. I didn't say delusion which would have been disparaging. I retyped that three times to find the word I thought fit. I was in foster care, on and off, for 15 years, and I know that they don't always come when they're called.

As to why she was there, I would like to know that too, because I fully believe that she should have never been.

Illusion: "an erroneous mental representation"
something many people believe that is false; "they have the illusion that I am very wealthy"
delusion: the act of deluding; deception by creating illusory ideas

(bbm) I honestly have no desire to play word games, but the clear implication of stating one won't is that others do lol. And no one needs to stop for my posts (except to squint to read the green I guess) but illusion certainly does mean that someone is not operating in reality. And where there are differing opinions, can be offensive and insulting. Because it's not what I believe does not mean someone else is being untruthful, living in a fantasy world, or has made a departure from reality. I strongly suggest we just move on, I am entitled to my opinion ("illusion," "version," or w/e it's called) and think we ought to probably save abortion for another thread. JMO JMI JMV

Believe it or not, I hate the memorials myself. Of course, they are everywhere in the South (for traffic accident victims, for religious purposes, for spots where people get married, just about everything.) So it sounds like the saddening part for both of is, is that there is nothing there. At all. Except old crime scene tape that no one thinks twice about when they drive by.

At the very least (while I think on this some more..) I am taking down the shreds of crime scene tape.

GRACE: Mr. Lockhart, they really do. They need your voice. And that is something that you can latch onto, something to make you strong.

I remember when my fiance was murdered, I was -- I could hardly even remember the scenario around it. But I knew that I had to represent crime victims. And it changed my whole life.

What is your most vivid memory of Shaniya?

LOCKHART: I used to sit in my recliner all the time and flip through the channel, and Shaniya would always come to the left side of it and just put her hands on the top of the recliner and look over my shoulder and would always give me a kiss and jump on my lap, and just tell me she loved me and just lay there for a little while before it was time for her to go play with her Barbies or something else of interest came across.

GRACE: What were her favorites things to do?

LOCKHART: She liked to color. She was a typical little girl. She had a little tomboy in her. So she was learning how to ride her scooter. Running into the cars, of course, scratching them up. Just real energetic. She loved to play dress up and Barbie and have girl time. Like my son said, you know, she`s really welcome into women, not as welcome into men, of course.

Another NG transcript eror. Should read:

Like my son said, you know, she's really welcoming to women, not as welcoming to men, of course.

If I lived closer I would help you. A little memorial is just that, a reminder for the living. Sometimes its for a car accident or such, I think it makes those left behind feel a little better. In this case, keeping Shaniya's memory fresh might help all of us be a little bit more aware. We are the ones that have to make sure that this doesnt happen again. That is her legacy.

Thanks, that was really all I was hoping to communicate. It doesn't appear as if many of the 'typical' people who care for children (parent(s) relatives, neighbors etc, watched out much for Shaniya during her life. Just a reminder to strangers that we should all be our brothers keepers' when it comes to children.

If you do make a memorial, can you stick a little something in there for the LE that worked their butts off? I might as well jump on the bandwagon.
And I'm all for taking the crime tape down. That's the most offensive part, that it ever had to be there and that no one in her family seems to care enough to take it down.

Kiki my friend: Responding to your points:
Aunt Carey refers to Shaniya like "one of her own" kids, and characterized herself as a "mother figure" for Shaniya--even she did not attempt to minimize her involvement in this way. Carey was a shining star in Shaniya's life; no question about it.

If Aunt was seeking work and had no intention nor made no commitment to care for Shaniya, then why was Shaniya enrolled in CDL's school district? Whose decision was that? I hope we learn the answer; makes no sense.

Exactly. She wouldn't think of her bio kids raised in that manner--but it was good enough for Shaniya. Another reason I believe she helped Brad in raising Shaniya but left decision-making to him. I'm in no way faulting her; just observing family dynamics.

Aunt described a history of mistrusting AD specifically because AD "NEGLECTED HER CHILDREN." What did she--or BL--ever do about it? She opened a can of worms with this one. LE will want specifics to build their case against AD.

It's rather legalistic to say, "well DFS gave the green light and said it was cool" Funny how everybody else in that family--even Carey--admits knowing AD wasn't fit to raise Shaniya. And if neither BL nor CDL wanted to, they should have at least raised #ell until she could be placed into a safer more suitable environment--w a caregiver who they didn't know "NEGLECTS her CHILDREN." Yup, totally agree. Words without action - I'm perplexed

I had just assumed Brad was working with the county to place a permanent memorial at the site. Hearing that there are still pieces of crime scene tape...I have no words.

As we type our remarks .. we state things like .. "DCF giving ok to live with AD, AD's home was a den of wolves .. "ect ya'll get my drift here...
Well the point I would like to make is
AD DID NOT LIVE THERE LEGALLY!!! AD DID NOT HAVE A HOME !!
Park manager even said that .. she also said she denied her application to live in the Park. So how could could any agency authorize Shaniya to live with AD when technically she had no home. JMO

IMO the the crime tape should have been taken down by the officials working the scene. When the scene was cleared, they should have taken it down.
We do not know if the family even knows it is there.

  • #134
I'm not sure if there is something in the works for a permanent memorial. I do know that as of this afternoon, there were still a few feet of crime sceme tape up. It'll be down tomorrow.

Has there been any news on this case at all over the past few days? AD is expected in court Thursday right?

  • #138
The family may very well not know it is there. Maybe it's just cause I see it every day, and it's not majorly obvious- just if you know to look at that spot while driving by. Only reascon I didn't remoce it when I left the flowers and angel is because the case seemed very much still..unclear. But at this point it's neglected, and I'll take it down as soon as it's light tomorrow AM.
