Found Safe NC - Shaylie Madden, 7-week-old infant, Biltmore Park in Asheville, 9 May 2019 *Arrest*

If her husband paid her $75,000 bail bond all he has to do is take her to the nearest ER and say, "My crazy wife is homicidal. She threw my baby down a cliff." The ER doctor at that point would have to keep Krista, and keep her safe from herself, until an inpatient psych bed was available. Krista would never have to go back to her house and wait for a psych bed because she demonstrated that she is homicidal.

Krista could be appropriately assessed, diagnosed, and started on treatment at any local inpatient psych unit while waiting for the "super dooper" 5 bed facility which may not have an opening for weeks.

Ask yourself why this isn't happening. You'd think her husband would be very worried that she is going to commit suicide in the jail. Today, it's VERY difficult to kill yourself in a locked psychiatric unit.
In North Carolina, patients wait in ER bays for days to be transferred to any psychiatric bed anywhere. We just don't have great inpatient options here. In my county, there is one floor of Duke hospital. Then there is one floor of UNC (not sure whether the 5 beds are part of that one floor or not). There is a state hospital in Goldsboro, which is across the state from Asheville. There is a private psychiatric hospital in Raleigh, which is not usually on anyone's insurance.

In a search for inpatient services in Asheville, I found one organization that has 16 crisis beds, a private residential treatment program that sounds far beyond what she is probably capable of (residents have to work 20 hours/week, etc.), and Mission Health, which doesn't actually list psychiatry as one of their services: Home | Mission Health.

From the link NC DHHS: Involuntary Commitments I posted last night, here's a list of licensed psychiatric facilities and inpatient units in NC as of May 2019: https://files.nc.gov/ncdhhs/documents/files/IVC-Designated-Facilities-May-2019.xlsx

The beds might be full presently, but there are more facilities available statewide.

ETA: Mission Memorial Hospital is listed as having inpatient facilities per the list.

So glad to see she is being transferred to UNC.

Yes! Such a relief for everyone involved and for all of us looky-loos on the outside. Hopefully this will begin the road to healing for this family.

Mother who faked baby’s kidnapping will undergo mental health evaluation, attorney says

Mother who faked baby’s kidnapping will undergo mental health evaluation, attorney says

ASHEVILLE, N.C. —

A North Carolina woman accused of tossing her infant daughter into a wooded ravine and then claiming the baby was kidnapped is scheduled to undergo a mental health evaluation, according to the district attorney.

Madden's attorney told The Asheville Citizen Times that Madden could be cared for at the UNC Center for Women's Mood Disorders, which treats women with moderate to severe postpartum depression and perinatal mood disorders.

A judge has to sign a consent order before Madden can be transferred.

Henderson County District Attorney Greg Newman said he had anticipated that Madden's legal team would request an evaluation, adding that he agreed to the transfer because Madden will remain in custody under a secured bond.

Right. Beds are usually full and this has been a chronic problem for years. And I did assume that mission had some kind of ward, but I’m
Fascinated that they don’t even list psychiatric services.

That is interesting.

IMO, paying her bond won’t be a problem. Krista and her husband appear to have come from above average income parents.

At their age and at this stage of life, it would be my opinion that the parents will be able to come up with the bond money.

If the UNC program doesn’t accept insurance, again, I believe both sets of parents will finance the cost. Getting to the root of Krista’s problem is the main concern of this family.

This will be an interesting case. An expert evaluation of Krista. What will legally be done with the diagnosis?

IIRC, in the movie Weeds, Nick Nolte's inmate character writes a play that includes something like

"Justice wears a blindfold, but when it comes to money -- she peeks."

IDK YMMV

One reason these mother’s do not take the baby to a Safe Heaven place, a Place where the infant can be dropped off without any charges to the parents is:

*The age of the child is different in each state
*The parent is asked information regarding the infant and the parent, however, this information does not have to be answered. In the parents confused and upset condition, I wonder if the receiving person actually tells the parent this? Or when the parent hears this question, they freak and leave?

In Krista’s case in NC, the age limit for dropping off a baby was 7 days old. Perhaps Krista didn’t have these thoughts at 7 days. As each day passed, she may have grown more unable to handle life with a newborn. I am not defending her!

We, the public, have been made to believe that it’s just drop the infant and leave. After reading a few of the states laws, there is more to it and it would be overwhelming to a new parent to choose this method. Not to mention that everyplace these days have cameras and are recording!

The definition of postpartum =occurring after birth.
The 4th name on the list, also a baby that was killed moments after birth:

A judge quadrupled the bond Friday for a woman suspected of letting her newborn die after choking him and banging his head moments after giving birth.

Police found the baby last Saturday in a trash bag in a Marshfield hospital parking lot, and medical staff were unable to save him.

Marylinn A. Feher, 22, of the village of Milladore, told investigators Tuesday that she put her hands around her infant son's neck and squeezed, according to a court document filed Friday that revealed new details in the case. She said she let go, then squeezed again, the report said.

Feher told the investigators from the Wood County Sheriff's Department and Wisconsin Division of Criminal Investigation that she hit the baby's head against a toilet while she squeezed, according to the documents. She said she didn't want the baby.

[This is not a case of post partum depression either. ]
BBM
That's your opinion, right? There's no diagnosis listed.

Does post partum depression hit a woman minutes after she gives birth>?

I figured the 5/28/2019 hearing was continued due to her being evaluated.

I am just a little confused and frustrated. I know others have shared the sentiment, but I am seeing a lot of people hoping mom gets help and hoping the family finds peace. I understand that, and want the same, but there have been so many moms that have injured or killed their babies and they don’t seem to be getting that same treatment. I can’t help but wonder, if KM came from a less wealthy family, or didn’t have a good job and a husband that is a physician, would people be reacting the same way? JMO....

And many of these moms, who injured or killed their child during their postpartum recovery, didn't obstruct justice by creating lies to blame others for their homicidal actions. Amanda did this. This behavior isn't similar with other known postpartum psychosis stories.

I fear we are going to learn that the baby which she threw down into the deep ravine is disabled in some way. The defense attorney already revealed that the baby, who was only 7 weeks, had undergone cosmetic surgery.
