What else can he say in that monster's defense? -- straws, he's grasping.
It is ridiculous because he is defending the ridiculous, the horrible and the inhuman. He's struggling and wasting time & energy, but he has to try. That's what a defender must do, so he's doing it as best he can. It's all carp & I feel sure he knows it, too.

HR is facing charges and prison time for negligent child abuse so she downplayed her responsibility in this case so she doesn't go to prison yet wants the benefit of her testimony in deciding whether she goes to prison or is free

HR could have left T with grandparents.. insinuates HR was afraid of actions grandparents would take. says HR testified for prosecution to assist her own case

never denied that J caused death of teghan but asks jury to go beyond the horror and look at J's background.. now passing on to another atty to talk about the law

Def just brought up something that had not occurred to me before though, and is actually a good point.
Did Helen Reyes leave Teghan with him because she was afraid Teghan would tell family about abuse that had been going on before she left town? Good possibility of that.
