The Brittany I am talking about is the "druggie" ...

Ok, I can't keep all these "adults" straight in this case.

All I know is that I have read so many accounts of DSS being called. Surely all these people are not lying.

IMO DSS could have been/should have been Zahra's saving grace. She had nobody else to count on. Seems nobody else gave a chit.

You have a child that beat cancer twice, was stripped of her family and her country, all she had was her Dad and Stepmother. She was abused. She was abused horribly. It was reported. Several times.

Didn't DSS investigate ALL the details of the case? Was Zahra just left to fend for herself????

It will all come out. Well, unless they get out the shredder again.

Zahra Baker's dad charged after landfill search turns up empty

http://hickory.wbtv.com/content/zahra-bakers-dad-charged-after-landfill-search-turns-empty?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter

Authorities said Monday morning that a missing 10-year-old girl's father had been charged and was being held in jail.

Adam Baker, the father of Zahra Baker, was not charged with allegations related to her disappearance, unlike Zahra's stepmother, who is being held on an obstruction of justice charge related to the search for Zahra.

Adam Baker, who first reported his daughter missing in a 911 call Oct. 9, was charged with 5 counts of worthless checks and 5 counts of failing to appear in court. He is being held in the Catawba County Jail on a $7,000 bond.

The charges against Baker came after authorties said Friday that they had completed their search of a Caldwell County landfill and that they had been looking for a specific mattress associated with the missing 10-year-old girl, Zahra Baker.

Thanks! I wonder what made them decide to arrest him at 3 in the morning?

Maybe he turned himself in considering the arrest took place at the police station.

I can think of a number of reasons why he might turn himself in.

BB claimed a lot of things in the beginning. When the smoke cleared, she admitted to her own drug issues and admitted that neither she nor her mother had called anyone regarding those claims she made.

She did indicate that she'd discussed it with EB's daughter BS and that BS had called. Still not sure if that is truthful.

So the only three people that we know of who may have called DSS were BS, a former neighbor who also had EB charged with threats, and the school.

HTH

I think there were more. But, that's besides the point I guess.

After the first call, do they not look at the record for the parents?
I mean, could they not tell there were outstanding charges on both EB and AB? That right there would be enough to investigate further IMO.

Zahra was failed by every adult in her life in America. DSS included.

Another great catch - first media account. Ya'll are the best.

Hmm, maybe the police gave him a little rope to run as long as he cooperated. He possibly lead them on a wild goose chase with the mattress and to send a message, they locked him up.

As the search for the girl entered its second week Saturday, people are left asking: Why didn't someone protect Zahra?

And the case raises fresh questions about North Carolina's long-troubled child protection system.
DSS officials in Caldwell and Catawba counties, where the Bakers most recently lived, say state law prohibits them from talking about any involvement they might have had with Zahra or her family. It's not clear how any abuse allegations might have been handled.

But the state's own reviews show it's not uncommon for children to die in North Carolina under suspicious circumstances while their families are under DSS supervision or had recent contact with social workers.
At least 137 children died during a recent five-year period in cases where abuse or neglect were suspected to have contributed - even though DSS had contact with their families within 12 months before they died, the Observer found. That's up from 119 deaths during the prior five years. And it comes at a time when child deaths overall in the state are at a record low.

Most of the 137 died from illnesses or accidents, but at least 26 became victims of homicide, usually committed by relatives or caregivers.

Zahra's Father Arrested on Outstanding Caldwell Co. Warrants
10/25/2010 9:10:16 AM

33-year-old Adam Troy Baker of 21st Avenue N.W. in Hickory was arrested just past 3 a.m. today on outstanding warrants from Caldwell County. Baker is the father of missing 10-year-old Zahra Baker. According to Deputy Chief of Police Clyde Deal, the charges against Adam Baker are unrelated to his daughter’s disappearance. Chief Deputy Deal had no further comment.

The charges against Baker include five counts for worthless checks and four counts of failure to appear on charges of communicating threats, assault with a deadly weapon and failure to return rental property, all misdemeanors.

Baker was processed at the Hickory Police Department where bond was set at $7,000, secured. He has been confined in the Catawba Co. Detention Facility with a first District Court date scheduled for November 18 in Caldwell County. At Baker’s request, the Australian consulate in Atlanta, Georgia was notified of his arrest. Baker is an Australian citizen.

I can't recall whether it was JVM's or NG's show, but I heard the reason why BB's mom didn't report the abuse was because she didn't believe her addict daughter. My God - if that were the case, then WHY on earth didn't she take the time to investigate the allegations herself??

Prior to that, I could've sworn I heard the real reason Mom didn't report B's story of abuse was because she was afraid her daughter would be arrested for drugs. Whatever. The fact is, they let that little girl down, and it's disgusting.

could the charges have been made to keep him in the states? ((insurance))

Why charge him now? Why not last week? There has to be a reason... I will look for the article where LE said they were waiting for the appropriate time to arrest him for his outstanding charges. Maybe they got everything out of him that they were able to???

Where is Zahra?

From this news link...
http://www2.hickoryrecord.com/news/...egal-trouble-follow-zahras-parents-ar-462500/

Adam and Elisa Baker were arrested for communicating threats against their family members too.

They were arrested on May 22, 2010 and charged with communicating threats against Elisa’s niece Brittany Bentley, her fiancé Zackery Tyler and the couple’s 7-month-old daughter. The threats stemmed from an outstanding debt Bentley owed them, according to the arrest warrant.

“He (Adam Baker) chased me and my fiancée. He literally tried to run us off the road twice,” wrote Tyler in the complaint accompanying the warrant. “He got in the opposite lane, swerved at the driver’s side and we had to swerve to keep from getting hit, then he passed us and slammed his brakes. We had to slam our brakes and still almost hit him.”

The couple went home and gave Baker the money she was owed, but she demanded more. She and Adam threatened the couple with Tasers, according to the arrest warrant.

“They said they would kill me and Brittany Bentley and that they knew where our daughter was and they would kill her if I didn’t pay her,” Tyler wrote.

Okay so unless they hit him with something else, he will be out very shortly on that $7000 bond. Now we know they had to pick him up on those charges, they were out there and everyone knew about them, but if they just let him out on bail, then I have to seriously wonder if they've got anything on him. They must be prepared to go ahead with additional charges on both of them at this point. Or maybe they do think he is not involved? :waitasec:

Where is Zahra?

Walmart would of had to get the ball rolling with a complaint. So if LE looked at his bank records and found he was bouncing checks they would have had to have got walmart to get the paperwork they needed to secure the complaint and then file it.

I would love to be at the hearing regarding the threats, etc., especially since, IMO, this may have to do with the "drug" money Brittany and perhaps he fiance may owed Elisa.
