*Graphic and very hard for me to write*

My grandmother passed away last month and I was with her in her home. It took a couple of hours for the funeral home to take possession of her. I was in bed with her and I rested my head on her shoulder.
She passed away very quickly of cancer. We were visiting her 5 days prior and she was outside and seemed ok. (she lives 4 hours away)She refused chemo or radiation and her doctor did tell her it would hit hard and fast (which it did) She was an active 75 year old woman.
She started having a slight smell before she passed away. I dont know why, but it was just a different smell. Nothing major and you couldnt tell unless you were very close.
For the hours following her final breath, I did not notice any leakage of fluids. We did keep her head elevated and she simply looked as if she was sleeping. I could still move her arms and hands but she was cold.

I am posting this because I believe Zahra may have been in the bed long enough for decomp to be on the mattress. I saw someone post that decomp signs begin immediately. I did not see any on my grandma, but she was probably in a more controlled environment and had been sick and had not eaten or had fluids for a little while. That could be the reason we did not see any fluids etc.

Just some insight on my recent experience.

I'm so sorry for your loss! I'm sure it meant a lot to your grandmother having you there. I helped take care of a family member when he was dying and I feel like it was a privilege. I'm sure being at home and with you helped her greatly!

Just to add that it is ok, however, to PM or email a mod to ask about a post or a rule for a thread. Just don't ask on the thread.

Thanks!

The Reporter says the following things, in the video at this link, that seem important to me:

-The landfill LE had been searching, takes as many as 60 mattresses a day. So, LE knew there were many more still out there.

-He believes the mattress was located this morning in the landfill. It matched the "description" of Zahra's mattress.

-The tests have not come back yet, that would verify whether or not Zahra had ever slept on the new mattress.

Seems like they didn't really think they would find it there and thought someone might have been telling tall tales about it's disposal. Not a very thorough search it appears.

I'm so sorry for your loss, it is very hard, I stayed with my father also in the days up to and upon his death. Not easy. Gonna say some hard things here, so skip please if you need to. I am also an RN, and have been at bedside or pronounced many a death, they are Most of the Time, Almost always, bodily fluids and bowel content lost. Even if you don't know, cause nurse or whomever are the ones that remove the padding or have to turn the person over for post mortem care that lots of times facilitaes the purge. Sorry, I had nightmares for a long time when I started this business, took years to get over the emotional impact of death. Many years later now, I deal, and am, if not comfortable at least knowledegable with what I have to deal with . Again sorry, blood is not necessarily what they are looking for, may be signs of death.

I'm watching JVM and she hasn't covered Zahra so far, don't know about NG.

Here's the link to watch for those with no cable or outside the States.

Read all of the Hickory Police media releases on the Zahra case

Previous Releases:

10/25/10 4:00 PM

Adam T. Baker, Zahra's father was arrested on 10/25/10 at 3:12 am at the Hickory Police Department. The charges were unrelated to the Zahra Baker case. The charges were five (5) counts of Worthless Checks and three (3) counts of Failure to Appear. He was placed in the Catawba County Detention Facility under a $7,000 secured bond. Before his arrest, Baker voluntarily came to Hickory Police Headquarters and submitted to an interview. Baker was at Charlotte-Douglas International Airport picking up a family member prior to coming to HPD. The Australian Consulate in Atlanta was notified of Baker's arrest at his request.

I wonder why they didn't arrest Adam when they arrested his wife? Is it possibly investigative strategy?

I really have to give my respect to LE and the people at the landfill. What I learned in a video here shocked me.
http://www.wbtv.com/Global/story.asp?S=13297637

60 mattresses a day are dumped in the landfill they where searching.
The tractors can grab things and drag them 1000 feet away.

So it's no wonder they did not find the mattress in 4 days. It must have been like a needle in a haystack. Even though they had area in the landfill to search the mattress they where looking for could have been dragged anywhere through that place.

LE left instruction on what they where looking for when they stopped the search there and I want to give credit to the employee who found it. It will bring a lot of help to the case and in turn to Zahra.

True that it does mean that as well but here I would say it is more commonly used in relation to a child/teenager as a broody/brooding teenager. But to be honest it is not a word I hear often (I usually hear it when referring to woman) other aussies may have a different experience.

I agree, Broody is not a word I use often. And when I do, it is usually in referrence to a teenage boy, whereas for a teenage or tween girl I would use the word moody. But that is just me.

Okay our sweet newbies :) I'm looking out for you and posting this as loving suggestions. Take it into to consideration or don't, might save you some grief though :)

JFYI:

3. Always respond to others as you wish to be responded to yourself. Meaning if you're upset or irked or down right miffed at something someone said or you thought they said to you~ don't rattle off a response and hit the submit button. Period. Alert if it's a violation or skip that post or go pour yourself a glass of wine...etc.

HTH to improve your experience in settling into WS. Said with love and understanding from when I first joined :) :blowkiss:

respectfully snipped and bbm:

Excellent advice. I shall take bolded advice right now. Thank you! :innocent:

Sources also say that the jailed stepmother of a missing 10-year-old Hickory girl -- cooperating with authorities since Sunday -- was taken from her cell early Monday and driven to at least two areas that were later searched by officials for clues about the missing girl.

Sounds like maybe EB pointed the first finger, being that he was arrested sometime early Monday morning.

lol, OT but don't you love how we all go quiet when a mod chastises the thread? Sort of like when kids are misbehaving because teacher has left the room, and when she returns, all goes silent.

I love ya hoppy ;)

Yeah, us mods are such thread killers. :floorlaugh:

Thanks to both of you for the technical discussion on what LE might be looking for on the evidence. I wondered why on earth they cut away the top of the mattress, but now have a much better understanding of what they really wanted.

I too am in the position of caring for my elderly mother in my home (94) who has just been diagnosed with AZ. I know I'll have stuff to deal with when the time comes, and appreciate the heads up from you both.

That is certainly one possibility. I so hope tormorrows renewed searching will bring us the answers to this and more.
