*Graphic and very hard for me to write*
My grandmother passed away last month and I was with her in her home. It took a couple of hours for the funeral home to take possession of her. I was in bed with her and I rested my head on her shoulder.
She passed away very quickly of cancer. We were visiting her 5 days prior and she was outside and seemed ok. (she lives 4 hours away)She refused chemo or radiation and her doctor did tell her it would hit hard and fast (which it did) She was an active 75 year old woman.
She started having a slight smell before she passed away. I dont know why, but it was just a different smell. Nothing major and you couldnt tell unless you were very close.
For the hours following her final breath, I did not notice any leakage of fluids. We did keep her head elevated and she simply looked as if she was sleeping. I could still move her arms and hands but she was cold.
I am posting this because I believe Zahra may have been in the bed long enough for decomp to be on the mattress. I saw someone post that decomp signs begin immediately. I did not see any on my grandma, but she was probably in a more controlled environment and had been sick and had not eaten or had fluids for a little while. That could be the reason we did not see any fluids etc.
Just some insight on my recent experience.
I'm so sorry for your loss! I'm sure it meant a lot to your grandmother having you there. I helped take care of a family member when he was dying and I feel like it was a privilege. I'm sure being at home and with you helped her greatly!
