A question for our Hickory locals.

Was it windy in Hickory the night/morning the fire was reported? Just thinking the fire may have been accidentally sparked by a cigarette. Do the Bakers smoke? anybody? I assume there's a good chance SM smokes some type of substance by her social networking posts.

Also, how has the weather been in Hickory since Zahra was reported missing? Has there been any rain to potentially wash away evidence?

Sorry if these questions have already been asked. Been having computer problems and I am way, way, way, way behind in catching up on the threads.

The fire was at 5AM on Saturday from what I saw.

Weather had been very dry until this week. I think we got a sprinkle of rain Tuesday night and then a pretty good storm last night, but those were the first two rains we've had in a while.

The police allowed people to congregate in the Bakers' yard,so I am guessing they were confident that they got all the evidence they needed in the first couple days of investigation. HTH.

no. I'm sorry to be so blunt but IMHO no.

I've wondered about that, but the police seem pretty confident this is a homicide investigation, for reasons they haven't made clear. I know the cadaver dogs had some hits on the Bakers' vehicles, but that doesn't really prove anything. She certainly had good reason to run away, and I can't see either of the Bakers going to police promptly to report that she'd run away (since if police found her, evidence of the beatings and the presumed willingness of a 10 year old runaway to talk about why she ran away would have landed both of them in prison).

I think police must have some more solid evidence she's dead than they've made public. I hope not, but at this point I think it's extremely unlikely that she both ran away and is still alive.

ITA! I will believe this when I hear it from someone other than his MOTHER... what loving father turns a blind eye to his daughter getting abused. and if they had such a great relationship YOU KNOW Zahra would have told him that EB was beating the shiot out of her.

None of EB family have said anything about AB good or bad.

We do have a picture of EB with a black eye...I wonder who gave that to her...Zahra...NOT...

I'm thinking AB knew how to hide his sinister side to the outside world. he may of been a raging maniac behind closed doors and was the catalyst that pushed the already metally unstable and drug addicted EB over the edge. and in her mind, the only retaliation she had was to attack Zahra and ultimately committ the unthinkable.. :furious:

He has a pending charge on the warrant that has not been executed for running his nephews wife off the road (where SM threatened her with the tazer gun) by report with the nephews infant daughter in the car. He didn't hide his rage behind closed doors.

He was by EBs side for that incident and an active participant. EB told people she hurt her hand beating Zahra but told him she fell so she was concerned about his reaction for some reason (probably that he didn't want cps out there again more so than he didn't want her beating his kid, but that is speculation on my part).

I have been thinking about the auto doused in gasoline with the passports inside. Could SM have planned to burn evidence that Zahra was ever even here in the US? Has any marriage certificate for these 2 been found? I thought I read that they married here in the states but other sleuths have posted they married in Oz. I'm just trying to play out a scenario for this gas/passport evidence in my head. I don't understand.....sooo confused.

I think it is possible but extremely slim.
And the owner of the business is out there allowing the search, I cannot imagine they would not have mentioned that this equipment was involved in a major accident, nor would explain the hits in the current mulch piles.

ITA. It's a near impossible scenario. Just one that sounded worth thinking over for practical purposes. Realistically, remains already decaying would leave the smell all over that thing...but there would be a huge mess. Too big to clean.

So something in contact with her body may have been shredded while she was buried nearby.

WSOC-TV said it was told by police investigators they have confirmed that Zahra was still alive when her family moved to Hickory. Earlier this week, Hickory police said they were having trouble finding people who had seen Zahra "recently." But police told WSOC that they are convinced the girl was alive about a month ago.

So was she completely out of contact with her grandmother since moving to the U.S.? Would she not have heard from her in the last month, or has anything been said about that yet?

I've wondered about that. I get the sense that there's a fairly long list of adult relatives who failed this little girl. She's an Australian citizen, and the grandmother knew she was moving to the US with her father and his somewhat bizarre older bride who he'd met on the internet. If the grandmother made an effort to contact Zahra regularly by phone, and then found contact cut off, a call to Australian child welfare authorities would have put the case into diplomatic channels, prompting Australian consular officials in the US to demand to see her, and forcing US authorities to launch a search for her at that time. Didn't happen, obviously.

I agree his mother may be a biased opinion but with EB's family openly SLAMMING her I would think if they had bad to say about HIM .... they would do just that.

I have to say I STRONGLY disagree with the line of thought that a child who has a great relationship with their parent is automatically going to disclose abuse. Children don't tell because of fear, because they are afraid of what will happen to them or other family members, because they feel ashamed, because they think they did something to warrant the abuse, or guilty, because they are brainwashed and groomed by the abusers. The list is endless. Even with a wonderful parent / child relationship the reality is that the majority of childhood abuse isn't reported by the child themselves to anyone.

What if someone known to AB and EB took Zahra away to rescue her? Or is this just wishful thinking.

BS made a statement about kidnapping Zahra on facebook but that it wouldn't have done any good. Not making any accusations just wondering out loud.

According to this article, LE switched the investigation over to a homicide investigation, after possible HUMAN REMAINS were found in the Baker's vehicles. So, remains, to me, is not the same as death scents in both vehicles. There must be a strong indication of death, for LE to switch the investigation over to a murder investigation, according to what was found in BOTH vehicles.

On Tuesday, Hickory police called off an Amber Alert seeking help in finding Zahra alive and declared the case a homicide after cadaver search dogs detected possible human remains in the Bakers' vehicles parked outside their home, according to a search warrant​
