I thought Zebb's mom said they were friends or acquiantances, not strangers. If that's true and this scenario happened, they would have seen each other in the store and said hi. Maybe that's what happened, but it seems odd that JO would get close enough to Zebb to be recognized at some point before JO is ready to make his move. Did police say whether they appeared to be together or just saying hi in the store?JO into following Zebb from work (they don't appear to even be with each other at the convenience store).
Regarding Zebb's reaction to the page, we only know this from JO. I could imagine Zebb reacting to a page from Aunt Ina b/c she was friends with Misty's mother. They used to have secret calls daily, but Zebb hadn't heard from Misty in days. He could have been eager to talk to anyone tied to her. JO's story goes that he waited beside the road while Zebb went to find a payphone. Why didn't JO follow him to the payphone? Why would he wait beside the road?JO lies about the cellphone not working, so Zebb leaves to make the phone call because he thinks it's M with an emergency (you could put 111111 on your page number, which would indicate an emergency).
Anyone (maybe Misty, Aunt Ina, or Wesley) could have sent that page and said something to send Zebb into an ambush. I sort of imagine it being Misty asking Zebb to go to some remote location because she's the one who Zebb would have been most keen to respond to. JO could have offered to follow and participated in the ambush. I think Misty, Aunt Ina, and Wesley claimed to be together at the time of the crime, but I could see them innocently agreeing to say they were all there even if one of them wasn't there the whole time b/c they don't want to bring attention to a probably-innocent friend. When Zebb calls, W answers instead and tells Zebb he's going to hurt M bad.
I don't understand why she would do this. Maybe she just wasn't too smart. It seems like the smart thing to do would be to leave the car abandoned. Putting it where everyone would see it would just provide opportunities to be seen or for the fake clues to end up being actual real clues that lead to the person who did it.Meanwhile, M is still feeling bad, so she leaves the car where it will be found. Nobody's going to miss it for sure. They put some random "clues" in there to throw off the scent.
Wow, lots of stuff here to think about!I loved BlkMtnGirl's speculation and analysis.

It occurs to me if Misty did not leave the car there, but rather it was someone wanted to throw the police off, they might leave clues that point to a female: the adjustment of the driver's seat, the bubbly drawing in lipstick on the window, and maybe the puppy. Maybe they thought that would point to Misty who had a solid alibi.
Why did you use the phrase throw off the scent? Were you thinking the dog may have been placed there to confuse any tracing dogs used on the car? That's the best explanation I've heard, but it's too complicated. It would be better just to ditch the car somewhere out of sight. If it stayed there for weeks, it's hard to imagine a dog positively identifying someone who had been in the car.
Thanks again to BkMtnGirl for posting this possible narrative.
Hopefully he'll confess considering the punishment he's facing. This has gone on long enough.
How do the page, lips drawn on the car, and puppy fit into this?I think it's pretty clear what happened here : Robert Jason Owens killed him for whatever reason on that night, buried him under his property and Misty and her boyfriend Wesley helped him cover the crime afterwards (Misty drove his car to that hospital where Zebb's mother was working). How the police didn't manage to find any proof of that in 15 years truly baffles me.
