ND- 1 parent and 3 children found dead in Grand Forks, ND home

''Zimmel also didn’t answer when asked if police believe Volk had killed her children and herself, saying the agency needed further investigation before assigning action or motive to anyone in the home. But he did tell reporters to consider what authorities have said -- they found a gun in the house and aren’t looking for any suspects right now.

As he spoke, the dark clouds and drizzling rain of night closed over a neighborhood that stunned neighbors had earlier described as “quiet.”

So the gun must have been found in her hand or next to her. Having mental issues and being overwhelmed by circumstances in life and committing suicide is one thing but geeeezzz---she murdered 3 children before shooting herself. Her children. Innocent children.
My kids and husband is what keeps me going if I did not have them. No, telling where I would be. I would be a mess. This is a sad story.

Did she have no support system at all? Family, friends, estranged hubby?

I’d like to know how much was garnished from her wages due to her medical bills. Was it 20%? 30%? Aren’t there rules for civil judgments when the paycheck is small? Rules for the hospital to follow? Rules for the judge to follow?

I bet her salary was so low that what was garnished triggered other things falling by the wayside. Not just food, but power/heat/water/rent. And she couldn’t seek treatment/medication out of fear that more bills would accrue.

And where and when did she get the gun? She obviously had mental issues, but no gun rights are generally afringed unless one has been decreed mentally incapacitated or a felon, which she wasn’t. I have to wonder if this was an impulse purchase.

The law is 25%. There’s only one garnishment allowed at a time except in the case of a person who has multiple child support garnishments coming out.

I just have my two boys. One is 23 and lives in Minnesota and youngest son is 20 and lives with my husband and I. I have just them and I am alone a lot by myself because they work alot. Sometimes I think can go crazy because I have so much time on my hands but I was so proud of myself, I walked to the gas station by myself. I was so proud of myself. I don't go anywhere by myself. I have a fear to go places on my own but it felt good to go to the gas station on my own.

I can imagine what she was going through without a support system. No,one to talk to. She was probably building up with anxiety and stress. Did she suffer from bipolar? I so can relate.

When you have gone through mental, physical, sexual assault and 2 traumatic events it is hard to function. I can only imagine what the that mother was going through with dealing with bipolar events its a struggle. I am the type of person to share I don't want to hurt people. I would hurt myself, first. No one else.

We're here and we are proud of you - many here know how hard it is to keep going.

One benefit of WS membership is having like-minded survivors together and strong.

I’m my State I think garnishments for bills are allowed to be up to 45%? I can’t remember for sure. It could be 25%.

Either way it would have been a lot of money to a struggling mom. And I’m sure her thought process was that if she couldn’t manage to get the kids all they needed, they wouldn’t be able to do it without her, so she took them with her.

''Gramps and her daughter Keirya had become close with their new neighbors, 35-year-old Astra Volk and her three children; Arianna, 6; Aidan, 10; and Tyler, 14.

Gramps would bring Arianna to school and Keirya would babysit the kids. They had all hung out the night before after Volk and her kids had gotten back from having dinner at a restaurant."

She had friends. Seems to me she was also a secretary or treasurer of the PTO at school so she wasn't 'all alone'.

Worked out well????? His CHILDREN are DEAD.

I hate to tell you this, but many men don't give a monkey's armpit for their kids. The number who walk out on their families and existing obligations to start new relationships and new families without the slightest consideration for the ones they've left behind should tell you that.

I hate to tell you this but there are mothers who do the same thing. This man just had all three of his children murdered and IMO it was a nasty thing to say that it 'worked out well for him' . You don't know him so why assume such a thing. If a father kills his children do you assume it 'worked out well' for their mother because now she won't have to pick up toys, do their laundry, give them rides to school, or cook for them anymore? Did you also assume it worked out well for David Smith when Susan Smith killed their two little boys? Lucky him---he didn't have to pay child support anymore. Good grief.

Very few mothers deliberately abandon their children. Of those who do, mental health issues are commonly involved.

Unfortunately the reality is that a significant proportion of men are happy to walk away and not look back. The shag is all they're interested in. Many of those men go to extraordinary lengths to avoid paying maintenance for their children. For them, anything that removes a financial obligation may be a good outcome because let's face it, if they gave a damn at all they wouldn't be missing in action. This may or may not be the case here, but I've seen very little to suggest the father is on the scene.

Needless to say the above does not apply to conscientious fathers who are cut off from their kids because of malice by their [ex-]partners.

You know nothing about the father. You do know this much though: He's not the one who murdered his 3 children. Mommy did that, but she gets a pass because she had a mental illness, couldn't pay her bills, and recently broke up with her latest man. All very good reasons to kill your 3 innocent children. Only if you're a woman though. If you're a man, you would be considered a monster for not just killing yourself and letting your innocent young children live.
