ND- 1 parent and 3 children found dead in Grand Forks, ND home

I just have my two boys. One is 23 and lives in Minnesota and youngest son is 20 and lives with my husband and I. I have just them and I am alone a lot by myself because they work alot. Sometimes I think can go crazy because I have so much time on my hands but I was so proud of myself, I walked to the gas station by myself. I was so proud of myself. I don't go anywhere by myself. I have a fear to go places on my own but it felt good to go to the gas station on my own.

That was a big accomplishment, you should be very proud!

"GRAND FORKS, N.D. --**A parent and three students were found dead in a Grand Forks, North Dakota home Thursday, a school official said in a statement*released to CBS affiliate KVLY.
Administrators at Lewis and Clark Elementary School asked for a welfare check at the home on the city's south side this morning. The responding officer saw what appeared to be a body inside the home and went in."

I found it odd how it was worded as "three students". Are they not her children?

Althought, they do say a woman and her three children live there but the bodies haven't been identified.

I wonder what prompted the school to call and have a welfare check done? Not something a school in Australia would do, is this normal for a U.S school to do?

What would welfare check into this? Something had to be suspicious?

Just read the other comments. I was a little late to the party and didn't see the other comments. Definitely suspicious, problems at home.

You know nothing about the father.

Indeed. Except he does not appear to have been on the scene. So where was he? Whatever his view of his ex-wife, if he gave a damn about his kids he would be more in evidence.

You do know this much though: He's not the one who murdered his 3 children. Mommy did that, but she gets a pass because she had a mental illness, couldn't pay her bills, and recently broke up with her latest man. All very good reasons to kill your 3 innocent children. Only if you're a woman though. If you're a man, you would be considered a monster for not just killing yourself and letting your innocent young children live.

You're missing the point. It's not that I think about such matters in the way I've described. It's that many men do.

When men kill their families it's almost always about control. The children are their property and they can do anything they want with them.

Women who kill their families are much rarer, though we seem to have seen more of these cases recently. But when they do, mental illness is much more likely to be in the mix.

One is almost always a cold, deliberate and calculating act. The other usually one of desperation and being unable to control herself.

I hate to tell you this, but many men don't give a monkey's armpit for their kids. The number who walk out on their families and existing obligations to start new relationships and new families without the slightest consideration for the ones they've left behind should tell you that.

Been there, done that.
FIL had affairs for years. When MIL found out she decided she wanted a divorce.
Within a few months he was remarried. He hasn't seen any of his kids or grand kids since.
He refuses to see us without his new wife, we refuse to be around her.
So, he gave up 3 kids and 5 grand kids for a new woman. :gaah:

Unfortunately that's all too common.

This isn't a thread about men who leave their wives and children for a different life. You don't know that's what happened here since you know nothing about the father whose 3 children were just murdered.

I agree---there's more to this story. The school doesn't immediately send out a resource officer because a child didn't show up for school for one day. And they sent that officer out shortly after the start of the school day. The school was aware of something that was going on in that house.

Because it was a statement by a school official. In the US, school absences are usually called in to the school- and for three children to miss at once would prompt a response.

They didn't all go to the same school.

The law is 25%. There’s only one garnishment allowed at a time except in the case of a person who has multiple child support garnishments coming out.

Is that a ND law? I handle payroll at my job and one of our employees has two garnishments at the same time.

Very few mothers deliberately abandon their children. Of those who do, mental health issues are commonly involved.

Unfortunately the reality is that a significant proportion of men are happy to walk away and not look back. The shag is all they're interested in. Many of those men go to extraordinary lengths to avoid paying maintenance for their children. For them, anything that removes a financial obligation may be a good outcome because let's face it, if they gave a damn at all they wouldn't be missing in action. This may or may not be the case here, but I've seen very little to suggest the father is on the scene.

Needless to say the above does not apply to conscientious fathers who are cut off from their kids because of malice by their [ex-]partners.

Wow, that’s a lot of assumptions. Many more mothers abandon their families than you think. I post on a stepparenting forum and believe you me, many of the posters there can confirm that mothers do leave their children for their own selfish reasons. Do deadbeat dads exist? Absolutely. Do deadbeat moms also exist? You betcha. I also don’t see any reason why the kids father is being accused of being a deadbeat, but maybe I missed something.

Lets all not forget, no matter the circumstances, there is a family actively grieving and traumatized right now. Judgment doesn’t change what happened. May Astra and these 3 children Rest In Peace. May the family hold on to faith and good memories in all the days to come as their grief will be forever.

"I've lost everything," said Beth Richards, wiping tears as she stood at the edge of a lawn decorated in pinwheels, bouquets and teddy bears.

Richards, of Florida, was among a group of people gathered Sunday night at 1006 S. 12th St. in Grand Forks, where her daughter, Astra Volk, and Volk's three children — Arianna Talmage, 6, Aidan Talmage, 10, and Tyler Talmage, 14 — were found dead Thursday morning.
