The investigation team at the Ukrainian disaster site of the MH17 is suffering from hacking, phishing and eavesdropping on telephones and computers. That says Pieter-Jaap Aalbersberg, leader of the repatriation mission to 'Dit is de Dag'.
'We assume that this has happened. Under this type of international circumstances many people are interested in our information.'
Aalbersberg says that he does not know who is targeting the ICT equipment of the MH17 investgation team. After their return to The Netherlands, all computers and phones are replaced with new material, as a precaution.
This weekend, the leaders of the MH17 investigation team returned empty-handed to The Netherlands.
The disaster area was not accessible for investigation, due to military clashes between the Ukranian army and the separatists.
Twenty members of the team remain In Ukraine and are ready to travel to the disaster area of the downed aircraft as soon as it is safe. The team wants to go to the crash site to recover all the personal belongings of deceased passengers and to do further investigations into the cause of the plane crash.
'I am optimistic, but also realistic about the investigation of MH17. Late October, mid-November winter will start, and then investigating is no longer possible,' Aalbersberg says.
Aalbersberg will travel back to Kiev on Sunday evening. 'We have to keep the pressure on and continue negotiations. It should be clear that the Dutch government will do everything to get the truth on the table.'
