Some pretty crappy news hit our papers, with the arrival of the Ukraine president to our country.

A PHOTOGRAPH of two Russian soldiers posing smugly with shrapnel-ravaged MH17 wreckage has emerged as Ukrainian president Petro Poroshenko meets with Tony Abbott to discuss justice for victims.

http://www.news.com.au/travel/travel...-1227152342107

But otherwise the visit is going well.

“Australia’s relationship with Ukraine has deepened since the tragic downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17,” Mr Abbott said in a statement yesterday.

“President Poroshenko’s visit provides an opportunity to build on the strong spirit of cooperation forged since the tragic events of MH17 and to discuss our shared commitment to a thorough and robust investigation and to bringing those responsible to justice.

“It is also an opportunity for Australia to reaffirm its support for Ukraine in the face of continuing threats to its territorial integrity.”

The President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko and Prime Minister of Australia Tony Abbott attended an ecumenical service in Melbourne at St. Peter's and Paul's Cathedral on Thursday, Dec. 11, to honor the 300 victims of the MH17 disaster, the heroes of the Heavenly Hundred, and the ATO soldiers who have sacrificed their lives in battle for the independence and territorial integrity of Ukraine.

Same impression here. A strange mixture of comments & much criticism of almost everything & more problems, mistakes etc. on the one hand.
And on the other hand the hard work that takes time and effort.
As always, results are slow in coming, and comments are much quicker.

CHIEF PROSECUTOR WESTERBEKE: NO SATELLITE IMAGES OF MISSILE SHOOTING MH17

NRC Weekend reports:
http://www.nrc.nl/nieuws/2014/12/19/geen-satellietbeelden-van-neerschieten-mh17/

Satellite images that show how on July 17 flight MH17 over Ukraine was shot out of the sky by a missile do not exist.

Fred Westerbeke, chief prosecutor and coordinator of the criminal investigation into the plane crash, tells this in an interview that will be published tomorrow by NRC Weekend.
According to Westerbeke, there has been "a misunderstanding" in this matter.

"There are no satellite images in the sense of a movie like when you see a rocket going into the air. There is no conclusive evidence in hands of intelligence services with the ultimate answer to all the questions."

Three days after the crash of flight MH17, US Secretary of State John Kerry stated in an interview with Fox News that he was sure "to have seen the launch of an SA-11"(BUK rocket).
Dutch investigators in this case have so far let known that they were waiting for satellite images that they did not get because intelligence services alledgedly were protecting their information. Some countries have "some hesitation" to make available satellite images, according to Tjibbe Joustra Chairman ofthe Dutch Safety Board earlier this month to NRC.

Westerbeke says that members of the Joint Investigation Team - which Ukraine, Australia, Malaysia, Belgium and The Netherlands work together in the search for the perpetrators - in the meantime "have questioned dozens of (eye)witnesses." There is a special witness protection program to ensure that people can safely make a statement in the criminal investigation. "Witnesses are very important for the investigation," says Westerbeke.

All the relatives of the victims of the crash of MH17 will receive a letter from Westerbeke "responding to the "critical and impatient reactions in the media."

PROSECUTOR: MUCH MORE EVIDENCE HAS BEEN COLLECTED THAN GENERALLY KNOWN

Chief Prosecutor Fred Westerbeke sends a letter to relatives of victims MH17

NOS.NL reports:
http://nos.nl/artikel/2009868-om-veel-meer-mh17-bewijs-verzameld-dan-bekend.html

The Prosecution in the investigation into the crash of flight MH17 has collected far more evidence and information than has become known through the media. This is mentioned by the coordinator of the investigation, chief prosecutor Fred Westerbeke, in a letter to the relatives.

It is striking that the prosecution speaks openly about the possibility that the aircraft was downed by a Buk missile. Initially, this option was left open.

"Obviously extensive investigation is being done into the possible use of a BUK as the weapon. But it should also be determined that there could not have been any other weapon," Westerbeke writes in the letter.

Westerbeke requests understanding for the fact that the criminal investigation is taking so long. He points to the phone calls that have been monitored and analyzed, and the vast amount of web pages with blogs, forums and social media, where photos and videos are located.

The police have examined reports and images that were sent by witnesses . "Witnesses who are still in the heart of the area have been able to provide important information to the police. Dozens (eye) witness statements have been recorded that have led to further investigation."

Westerbeke emphasizes that it is too early to draw definitive conclusions. "Hard evidence must also be able to exclude any reasonable alternative, any possibility that events occured differently."

The prosecution also looks forward with great interest to the conclusions of the Dutch Safety Board, which at this time is recreating a part of the aircraft in order to determine the cause of the crash.

"In addition, tracing those responsible is not a simple task," writes Westerbeke. The criminal investigation will take at least a year.

MORE INFO ABOUT THE LETTER FROM CHIEF PROSECUTOR WESTERBEKE TO FAMILIES OF THE VICTIMS

De Telegraaf reports:

Translation (partial)

According to Westerbeke metal particles have been found in the remains of some victims (*). Those particles "do not appear to correspond to material of the aircraft. They would therefore have come from a projectile with which the MH17 was hit. The investigation that is necessary to obtain greater clarity is complicated and time-consuming. "

MAYOR OF HRABOVE: LAST WEEK, A VILLAGER FOUND A FOOT AT THE CRASH SITE

RTL-Nieuws reports:
http://www.rtlnieuws.nl/nieuws/buit...orpeling-vond-afgelopen-week-voet-op-rampplek

Translation:

The search for human remains and personal belongings of the victims of the plane crash with the MH17 is not over yet. That says the mayor of the village Hrabove, where the largest parts of the plane came down.

"Last week someone from our village found a foot of a woman," Mayor Vladimir Berzezhnoi said to RTL Nieuws. "She was very upset. She ran away and now we can not find it again.
It was close to my village, Hrabove." The snow makes it hard to find now.

Yesterday it was revealed that at least ten families of victims are still waiting for the bodies or more remains of their loved ones who died in the plane crash. They are frustrated that five months after the disaster so little has been found and that the information about the search in the disaster area they are getting is too limited.

According to the mayor, the villagers do not enter the areas that still need to be investigated. "The places where wreckage of the aircraft is located must remain untouched. The Dutch mission would like to take samples of the soil. There are signs now, no one may touch the ground, and we do not do that," according to the mayor.

He regularly receives personal items brought to him by the villagers. When he hears that we are calling from The Netherlands, he hurries to his office because he wants to share what was found.
He lists the Dutch names appearing on boarding passes and identity cards. Among the findings are also photos, a picture book, phones and a laptop.
Meanwhile, the mayor has transferred all the stuff on the Dutch mission.

A large area north of the village of Petropavlivka, in the west of the main crash site, has not been searched by anyone according to the mayor. The mayor of that town, Natalia Voloshina, tells us: "In August, Ukrainian briefly negotiated with the rebels, through the OSCE, but nothing ever came of it. I have never again spoken to someone here. They were fighting here all the time.. . This area was a front line in the conflict. It is only since three days that things are quiet now."

There are still pieces of wreckage between Petropavlivka and Orlovo Ivanivka, says Voloshina. "I do not know if human remains can be found there. I think the chance is very small that after so much time anything can be recovered."

BREAKING: PICTURES AND EYE WITNESS: MISSILE FROM SEPARATIST AREA DOWNED MH17

RTL-Nieuws reports:
http://www.rtlnieuws.nl/nieuws/binn...raket-uit-separatistengebied-haalde-mh17-neer

Translation:

RTL Nieuws has received pictures that give more information about the circumstances of the downing of MH17.
Those images and an interview with the maker of the pictures prove that it is very likely that the disaster was caused by an anti-aircraft missile, fired from separatist region in eastern Ukraine.

It involves a series of high resolution photos taken shortly after the firing of rocket and immediately after the crash of the aircraft.

The three photos were taken in the vicinity of the crash site. The first two pictures show a vertical plume, which seem to come from where the rocket is launched. The third picture is a large black plume of smoke, probably from where the plane came down. To protect the privacy of the photographer, the photos are not attached.

Moreover, RTL Nieuws has spoken with the creator of the photos, a crucial eyewitness who was alerted on July 17 by a loud bang. Because of his safety, RTL Nieuws does not mention his name. "I have photographed that white trail in the air. At that moment I did not know what that meant, to me it was just a white stripe... from the horizon up to the clouds where it broke up. Only later it became clear what that was all about. "

The maker has handed over his camera to the International Commission of Inquiry. He spoke for three hours with a Dutch and an Australian investigator.

According to IT security firm Fox-IT and Eduard de Kam, an expert in the field of digital photography, there is no trace of manipulation discernible in the pictures.

Former Air Force Commander Theo Rikken, who has been responsible for the Dutch Defence shooting missiles from the ground, has viewed the plume in the pictures. He tells RTL News: "What you see here is very likely the trail of a missile, of a rocket that has been fired."

At the request of RTL Nieuws, satellite company Netherlands Geomatics & Earth Oberservation (NEO) and the Technical University of Delft have done a search on the basis of the photographs for the location where the rising plume might originate from. This investigation leads to a field that looks weird on satellite images from a few days after the disaster. From this field, which was in rebel territory on July 17, the missile has is most likely been fired.

Corné van der Sande from NEO says: "On the image before the disaster, we see a normal field with wheat. But after the disaster, we see a black spot That black spot, that can be burnt land..."

That the missile has been fired from a field is not surprising, says former commander Theo Rikken: "In Ukraine they put these systems simply on the ground. So if a rocket is launched, ignition of the engine will cause burning of the grass and bushes. And ultimately that creates dark smoke. "

The Prosecution has announced that it has the pictures in its possession, and that they are part of the criminal investigation into the disaster. The creator of the pictures himself says that his camera has been transferred to the International Commission of Inquiry.

PICTURES AND METHOD OF INVESTIGATION (CONTINUED)

RTL-Nieuws explains:
http://www.rtlnieuws.nl/nieuws/binnenland/hoe-onderzocht-rtl-nieuws-de-nieuwe-mh17-fotos

Translation:

How did RTL-Nieuws examine the newly found pictures of flight MH17?

Three photographs very likely point to the downing of flight MH17 by an anti-aircraft missile from rebel territory, according to the investigation from the research editors of RTL News, made with the help of satellite imagery, elevation maps and photo analysis. Read on to learn how the investigation was conducted.

RTL Nieuws has posession of pictures taken on July 17 in eastern Ukraine in the area of the crash site MH17. This concerns the original files of three photos. On the first two pictures you can see a vertical plume. The third picture is a large black plume of smoke.

Two pictures have been published previously. But the three pictures held by RTL News are of a much higher resolution than previously published photos and also contain other data, such as the time at which they were taken. This was the starting point for further investigation. In order not to endanger the safety of the person who made the pictures, RTL Nieuws will not publish these photos.

Are the photos real?
First, we investigated whether the photos are real and whether they have not been manipulated. We have submitted the photos to two experts: Fox-IT, a company specializing in cyber crime, and Eduard de Kam of the Dutch Institute Digital Photography (NIDF). De Kam is a digital photo expert who assists the World Press Photo Jury with his knowledge. In particular, he is pays attention to wheter the images submitted have been tampered with.

Fox-IT and the NIDF have carefully studied the photo files and according to them, there is no indication of post-processing, fraud or manipulation of the three photos.

What's in the photos?
The first two pictures were taken shortly after one another (less than 10 seconds), a few minutes after contact was lost with the aircraft. That was at 15:20:03 Dutch time. The first picture is a wide shot and in the second picture the camera zooms in. On the horizon a black plume of smoke is visible that rises from the ground. This plume blows to the right and changes color to gray and then goes straight up as a plume of white smoke.

We consulted several missile experts, among others Theo Rikken. He has been head of the Defence Department of Guided Weapons at the airbase De Peel (The Netherlands) and later fulfilled various NATO staff positions. As we put the pictures in front of him, he resolutely tells us: "This is very likely a trail of an anti-aircraft missile," or a smoke trail that a missile leaves behind when it is launched.

The third picture, which was taken again a few minutes later, around 15.30 hrs Dutch time, shows a thick black smoke plume that corresponds in shape with other images taken shortly after the crash of the MH17 aircraft.

Where have the pictures been taken?
To determine the position of the plume, it is important to identify where the pictures were taken. RTL Nieuws requested NEO (Netherlands Geomatics & Earth Observation) to analyze this. The company has extensive experience in interpreting satellite imagery, especially in rural areas. Previously, they have mapped for RTL Nieuws on the basis of satellite imagery where all pieces of wreckage of the plane ended up.

In addition, we have enlisted the help of the Delft University of Technology for taking measurements with the aim to find the position of the plume. We wanted to know where the missile could have been fired. Read the report of NEO and TU Delf here (pdf).

We have requested NEO to search on satellite images with high resolution for the spots that we see in the photos, such as a large hump with soil. Three electricity poles that stick as a fork out of the ground, were found by NEO on the satellite images, but also on photos stored on the Internet.

In addition, NEO compared height maps of Airbus with the height as seen on the pictures from the area. TU Delft has then calculated what has been the height position of the creator of the picture.

What is the location of the plume?
NEO has found numerous landmarks in the photoson satellite maps. With those data, they were able to draw a line from the position of the author of the photo via the landmarks to the plume.

When the investigators of NEO drew the line further, they saw something special on the satellite images of a few days after the disaster: a corner of a yellow wheat field looked dark. In order to examine that location better we ordered a superior satellite image at DigitalGlobe.

On these images it can be seen that everywhere in the area grain and other agricultural products are still growing, or that they are being harvested. Only in this remarkable corner, where the plume was located according to the lines, the land has been plowed.

Corné van der Sanden of NEO says about this location: "In the image before the disaster, we see a normal field with wheat. But at this location, after the disaster, we see a black spot and that black spot could be.. burnt ground. We see that actually no vegetation is present in the wheat field. And you will also see a rampart and my suspicion is that the farmer has been trying to stop the fire by building a wal."

There are burn marks which confirm the launching?
On images captured by British newspaper The Telegraph shortly after the disaster, burn marks appear on the ground that correspond to the dark spots next to the plowed field that we found back on the satellite images.

Was it a BUK-missile?
On this subject, both the missile experts and the satellite experts are inconclusive. This reconstruction and the interview of RTL correspondent Olaf Koen with the creator of the photos, ensure we are almost certain that this witness has seen and recorded the smoke plumes from the missile that downed flight MH17. It was therefore an anti-aircraft missile. Other evidence must prove what type of missile it concerns.

Who fired the missile?
The suspected spot in the field is located in an area that was in the hands of the pro-Russian rebels on July 17. This is seen on this map (version July 17) that is used among others by the OSCE to monitor the situation of war. About 10 kilometers further away the frontline changes into non-occupied territory (in the hands of Ukraine).

Could a missile have hit flight MH17 from this location?
Yes. A calculation of the TU Delft shows that from this spot it is possible to hit with a BUK missile a plane that flew on the location of the MH17 at the time of the attack.

Are the pictures in posession of RTL Nieuws also included in the criminal investigation?
The Dutch Prosecutor confirms to RTL Nieuws that the photos form part of the investigation.

Wow ... that is good news. They are gathering some substantial evidence. :cheer:

I went to a charity breakfast yesterday. and our FM Julie Bishop was the primary speaker. It is the first time I have seen her in real life. Very impressive woman. She spoke for at least 30 mins .. no cue cards .. no notes .. not one umm, er, or stumble. Julie originally comes from Adelaide (where I live) and her family, who still live here, were at the breakfast too.

Julie spoke about a variety of aspects of her job, and took a question from an Australian Ukraine lady who was at the breakfast .. asking about her impressions of Ukraine. Obviously MH17 was included in her reply, and the great work done together by the Netherlands, Malaysia, Ukraine, Australia - both at the site and at the UN - and the significant troubles within the country due to Russia trying to regain Ukraine as part of Greater Russia. She spoke highly of everyone she had worked with there, and is immensely proud of them all for the huge effort to try to bring all of the victims home.

EYEWITNESS MH17: MY GOAL IS JUSTICE

Olaf Koens' (reporter for RTL-Nieuws) interview with the author of the pictures:
http://www.rtlnieuws.nl/nieuws/binnenland/ooggetuige-mh17-mijn-doel-rechtvaardigheid

koens en getuige_0.jpg

Translation:

My goal is justice

A local of eastern Ukraine heard a loud bang when MH17 was shot. He took some pictures shortly thereafter, that indicate that the plane was shot down by a missile from rebel territory. Correspondent Olaf Koens spoke with him.

Can you tell what you have witnessed on July 17?
"The day predicted nothing special. In the morning I woke up and I went to work. At four o'clock in the afternoon I came home. And at 16:20 hrs we heard an explosion. The first explosion was not very heavy. 15 seconds later, or something like that, there was a second explosion, which was fiercer and shook the windows."

What were you doing when you heard the explosion?
"Explosions were already no exception at that time. But this was something else, that explosion. This was not like what we had heard before at all. I immediately wanted to find out where the sound came from. What had exploded? Where? What? How? I then ran to the roofed balcony. I looked around and saw nothing.

I photographed that white trail in the air. At that moment I did not know what that meant. For me it was just a white stripe, from the horizon up to the clouds where it dissolved. Only later it became clear what that what was all about."

How much time passed between the explosion and the picture?
"That was a minute after that explosion, I think. Maybe even less, something like 30 seconds."

Were you there alone?
"I was the only one on the balcony. But other people were also on their balconies. In front of each window you could see a face."

So there are more people who have seen the plume at that time?
"Yes, yes."

There are also people who have photographed the same?
"That could very well the case, but at that time, 17 July, the rumor circulated in the town that taking pictures was not exactly safe, it was said.. do not make pictures if you do not want to end up in 'uncomfortable situations'. At that time the town was already occupied. On top of the administration building a flag was hanging, and that was not Ukrainian. "

Do you still have the camera that the photos were taken with?

"I contacted a friend of mine and gave him the photos, including the originals. That friend contacted the SBOE (Ukrainian Security Service) and at the SBOE they were interested in the photos. He has handed them over to the SBOE. Then I had to explain the details of those pictures more specifically and hand over the camera."

Did they compensate you for it?
"For replacement? Of course. They have reimbursed the value of the camera."

Have you made private copies?
"Yes. But beside the camera I also had to cede the flash cards."

And then you went to Kiev?
"Yes, in the beginning I spoke directly with the SBOE. Afterwards, representatives of international investigation contacted me through the SBOE. That was in the beginning of August, when I handed over the camera. The SBOE did not need it themselves and they have handed the camera to the Dutch investigators. They had asked for the camera."

The investigators have also spoken to you?
"Yes, I have spoken extensively with investigatyors from the International Commission. There were two investigators:. One from The Netherlands and one from Australia We spoke for about three hours, and that conversation was recorded with a video camera.."

Do you think they can use your material?

"Yes, I think they will use it. The photos are circumstantial evidence. There are no other images available that prove that the BUK is shooting something in that area. While everyone knows how matters stand, there is no further evidence."

Why have you agreed to give us an interview?
"I want justice. I want the people who have done this, to be punished."

Are you hopeful about that?
"I think the truth will surface one way or the other."

My Christmas offering: sunflower seeds for MH17 families, from the fields of Ukraine - The murder of 38 Australians on MH17 was so profoundly affecting I broke with decades of journalistic practice, writes Paul McGeough in Washington.

Geraghty and I fell to talking about the families and some kind of meaningful memento that might be brought to them from the site.

First we thought of a handful of dirt from the fields. But on every drive to the scene of the crash, I was struck by the sunflowers, their nodding heads a sea of yellow that cloaked much of the horror of the sprawling site.

I fixed on the idea that the families should be offered a small parcel of sunflower seeds. They could plant them immediately; or put them in a bottom drawer until a time when they felt their grief might be ameliorated by having a bunch of Ukrainian sunflowers at the bottom of the garden or nodding their heads outside a window. A reminder of sad loss to be sure; but hopefully it would be a consoling one.

For this to work as I envisaged, it was essential that the seeds be from the crop that was growing at the time of the crash. These were to be seeds with precise meaning.

When we returned at dawn on our last day, none of the locals were to be seen. We drove to the field in which the buckled cockpit lay and quietly went to work – chopping enough sunflower heads to fill a big suitcase that we had bought at the market for this purpose. No one came to ask what we were doing.

I spent the evening in my hotel room breaking open the sunflower heads and bagging the seeds.

There's enough for 80 or maybe 100 small parcels should anyone want some.

Heartbreaking: One of the pilot's seats from MH17 lies in a Donetsk field. The sunflower seeds - from the same crop that was
flowering at the time of the tragedy - have now been brought to Australia.

IDENTIFICATION VICTIMS MH17 WILL TAKE AT LEAST UNTIL MARCH 2015

Nieuwsuur has interviewed staff of the Dutch NFI who work on the identifications of the victims:
http://nos.nl/nieuwsuur/artikel/2010794-identificatie-mh17-duurt-zeker-tot-maart-2015.html

Translation:

The identification of the victims of flight MH17 will take at least until March 2015. That says Arie de Bruijn of the National Forensic Investigation Team (LTFO). It is true that 294 of the 298 passengers have been identified but there are still many remains of which the origin has not yet been determined.

The Dutch Forensic Institute has examined in recent months some 3,500 DNA samples. This is the largest investigation ever conducted by the NFI. Comparing the DNA structure of the remains with that of relatives is complicated because often entire families died during the crash.

"The fire that raged at the scene, is bad for the DNA," says investigator Arnoud Kal. "But we were able to find good samples."
Wim Heijnen, coordinator MH17 at the NFI: "The techniques have become more sensitive, we can do this better and better."

Shortly after the disaster, criticism of the eastern Ukrainian salvage employees was heard in The Netherlands, but according to the investgators the remains in the disaster area were salvaged in a knowledgeable way. In addition, during the inspection in Hilversum, no trace of contamination of DNA samples was found.

Even if the work in the laboratory is done with tiny samples, the work is still emotionally demanding for the experts. "You realize again and again when you work on this case how many victims there were, regrettably, and that gets to you," forensic expert Kal says.

According to Arie de Bruijn of LTFO the employees are challenged to show emotion. "It is not a clinical profession. The strength of the identification process is that opening up about human emotions is allowed. We do pay attention to one other."

Funeral director Pedro Swier was responsible for the transfer to the relatives. He regrets that he often could not make the remains presentable for the relatives. "That does not feel right, I would like to do more, and that did not work out."
De Bruijn calls the work a passion. "To enable survivors to mourn, I'd call that a passion." Ten years ago, he participated in Thailand in the identification of victims after the tsunami [on the Second Day of Christmas 2004].

All employees working on the identification of the victims of MH17 recently received a commemorative medal of the Dutch Cabinet, including the Ukrainian workers in the disaster area. "They all have done important work and a tribute is appropriate," Dutch Home Secretary Ivo Opstelten said.
