New Airline Rules

Just a little personal information to ease some minds :) A friend's son & his wife just flew yesterday to Nevada and didn't have any problems. They were able to get up out of the seat in the last hour, etc. So apparently it is now up to the discretion of the flight crew. The couple also said flying out of a smaller airport may have helped. MOO

Okay - The next would-be terrorist is going to use, hummmmmmm, a secret decoder ring, or a tricked out bling necklace - no jewelry allowed...or maybe, hummmmmmmmm, an incontinent pad or diaper or a sanitary thingy....Oops - those are out too. Geez, a terrorist can use ANYTHING, FGS.

I know, let's just all go back to the horse and buggy days - no terrorists, no traffic jams, no pollution from exhaust - Just all-you-can-use fertilizer - everywhere. And hopefully your boss will give you four weeks off to visit family for one day.

Or, instead of going backward, we go forward and - oh, I don't know, howz about we get some training from the Israelis, or from some COMPETENT mercernaries...

Does anyone have a link to where the new airline rules were originally reported?

I just flew yesterday. People were easily able to access the overhead bins, and people could freely move around up until the flight attendants announced we were landing. Going through security was the same as usual, although they seemed to be a little tighter about checking ID's and searching more people.

I asked one of the flight attendants (I flew Delta) and she had no knowledge of the new airline rules. Neither did any of the TSA officials I asked.. if these new rules are taking effect immediately, it seems no one knows about it in the airports I flew through (Atlanta, Denver, then to SLC).

I think they now said the rules are left to the discretion of the crew.

When I've watched the news about the new rules, several broadcasts have indicated that they are just for flights originating outside of America. While I believe these rules are the usual "knee-jerk reaction," it makes me wonder if the folks creating them ever heard of Timothy McVeigh.

Passengers on all domestic and incoming flights now must remain in their seats with their seat belt fasten, have no access to the overhead bin, and cannot leave their seat within an hour before landing.

I guess I just don't get it. This is insane. Many elderly persons are incontinent. What if someone is ill? What about children that need to go to the bathroom?

If someone is going to blow up a plane, why do it the last hour? If I correctly recall, 911 wasn't during the last hour.

The problem is with Homeland Security, not passengers.

Either that or the State Department.

Instead of saying people have to keep their hands on their knees, etc., why dont they just be done with it and demand that passengers all grab their ankles?

I flew to/from Chicago O'Hare this past week. No observable changes :)

No different instructions once on the plane, etc. (I flew American.)

I actually must admit all 4 flights were on time and non-eventful (JUST how I like them!)

P.S. I sat by a traveler who went through security yesterday in Toronto, Canada. He said they have a very tight security system, that would put ours to shame. But also said he more than doubles the time involved. Repetitive screenings, etc. FWIW

I'd rather have repetitive screening than die.

I know what you mean, but...

I don't fly even half as much as I used to, but I have been flying all over the country my entire life.

The new rules will be inconvenient, I agree, but not as inconvenient as trying to collect my body parts from three separate states after a terrorist has blown up the plane I'm flying in, midair. BBM

There really are people on this planet whose one mission in life is to destroy the United States, our allies, and as many Americans as possible.

Our oldest and youngest travelers may have to don 'diapers' if it's not possible to 'hold it' for an hour at a time. Someday, I hope to be an old enough traveler where that situation may even apply to me. By God's grace.

I'm all for making it more difficult for the terrorists to accomplish their goals. Whatever it takes.

:applause::applause::applause:

Maybe we should start a letter campaign, explaining to the terrorists how much they are inconveniencing American travelers.

Perhaps they will have compassion, and stop trying to blow us up. (I mean, even terrorists have to pee, right)?

Until this happens though, I will abide by the new regulations, and trust that Homeland Security just might know a little more about the benefit of this new security precaution- and the reasoning behind it- than I do.

I think it is interesting, that after a major disaster, people scream and holler about how not enough was done in the name of prevention.

Wish I could 'thank' this post more than once...

AAAAA-MEN to that Trino! Let the Afghans solve thier own problems. We have our own problems here.

Machine guns on the beach. Same thing I thought. We don't have that, and don't need it. WRONG!! We do need it! And we need for people to see it up close and personal. It's a message - The Americans don't play! But we don't send that message. The message we send is "Idon't want to see guns...I don't want to be searched....I don't want in your face protection....I don't want to wait to go pee....I'm gonna file a lawsuit....I don't want my rights violated..." waa waa waa...that is the message we send. And the rest of the world knows it!
In Rome, last month, busy street right in front of a cafe. I walked up behind a man in uniform to ask for directions. "Me scuzi Signore..." and when he turned around to help me, with his big machine gun strapped across his chest, it certainly got my attention. I've seen this before, and no matter how many times I see it, it gets my attention - in a good way. It sends a message. We don't play, so don't mess with my country.

We have so many great service people. Let's bring them back and ask them protect us. TSA needs the help.

Janet Napolitano needs to be removed from office after the events of the last few days.

MOO

Bingo.

Let me see if I understand this.

This terrorist bought a one way ticket, with cash, and no luggage. His own father tried to warn the U.S. about him.

This guy gets through security. I, however, do no not because I have a plastic bottle of hairspray that the top can come off of so you can see inside of it but because it is more than 3 ounces I get stopped.

Just checking to make sure I am not in the Twilight Zone.

I know this is not the political thread and I'm not trying to start anything, but can't help being reminded of "...doing a heckuva job, Brownie." Diff party, same type situation. Obviously, party has nothing to do with it, just being oblivious to what constitutes doing a good job or working.

No, I don't understand this. I am not against security measures, but this one appears to be useless and extremely incovninient. Forbidding the use of a restroom in the last hour of the flight makes no sense whatsoever, since someone could attempt to blow up the plane at any time, and not just the last hour.
Meanwhile, what are the passengers who need to use a restroom supposed to do? Maybe the seats should be turned into portable toilets, so no one ever has to leave their seat. Oh they really will have to strip everyone naked and issue a diaper before boarding (I am being sarcastic, by the way).

This rule was implemented right after 9/11 too. I remember because my son (who was 5 at the time) really had to go to the bathroom. The flight attendant said no. He was in tears because he was about to wet himself. I begged the flight attendant and told her she would be cleaning up urine unless he was able to go. That did it. He went but I had to go with him and wait for him out side the door and escort him back.

This rule is just dumb. I'm sorry but there are many people out there with bladder problems. It's one thing for a child to have an accident but can you imagine a poor senior citizen? They would be so humilated.

I am all for doing anything to keep flying safe but this rule makes no sense.

More info is beginning to come out. The Nigerian says he was part of a larger plot. Oh, great. Just great.

http://abcnews.go.com/Blotter/food-...flight-253-bomb-scare/story?id=9430057&page=2

"Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, told investigators he was part of a "larger plot" and that he believed there were other potential bombers set on similar missions on American aircraft, according to law enforcement officials."

My first thought was this guy was the practice guy. What is worrisome is what if they have 50 terrorist all trying to get on different planes on the same day. If only 10 of them make it and only 5 of the are successful that is still beyond devastating.

You know, you can make yourself crazy thinking about what could happen.
