The Navajo Nation recorded 164 new cases of the coronavirus and nine related deaths on Thursday.

That brings their total to 2,141 cases and 71 deaths. Navajo territory spans three states, with cases in all three: New Mexico, Arizona, and Utah.

This comes just before a 57-hour weekend curfew, which will go into effect tonight at 8 p.m. local time.

Under the curfew, all residents will be required to stay home except for essential workers. Navajo police will also set up checkpoints on roads and issue citations for those who break curfew.

The Navajo Nation extended its state of emergency declaration and said government offices will stay closed until May 17.

New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham has locked down the city of Gallup in an effort to "mitigate the uninhibited spread of Covid-19."

Starting at noon today, "all roads into Gallup are closed," the governor's office said in a statement.

Businesses in the city will close from 5 p.m. to 8 a.m., and vehicles will only be allowed to have a maximum of two individuals, the statement said.

"The virus has caused many deaths, stretched our medical facilities and resources to their capacity, and adversely impacted the welfare of the City of Gallup," the city's former Mayor Jackie McKinney said in the letter.

McKinley County, the home of Gallup, has 1,027 positive cases of Covid-19 as of Thursday. That's more than 30% of the state’s total cases and the most positive cases in the entire state, the governor's statement said.

"Its infection trend has shown no sign of flattening," the statement said.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.- The promising anti-viral medication Remdisivir has not been easy to obtain for clinical trials.

The one person given the drug during a clinical trial at UNM hospital recovered from COVID-19.

The hospital had to apply to use the drug under a compassionate use program because it was not approved for use on COVID-19 patients. However, Gilead, the company that makes Remdisvir, is no longer utilizing the compassionate use program.
