State loosens COVID-19 testing requirements, field hospital approved

Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham holds remote news conference Tuesday afternoon to provide an update on COVID-19 efforts in New Mexico.
  • 35 new COVID-19 cases, bringing total to 315
  • Two new hospitalizations, bringing total hospitalized to 24
  • One additional death, bringing total number of deaths to five
    • The latest death is a male in his 40s, no information is available on his previous medical history
  • President Trump has agreed to grant New Mexico a field hospital, the location of this hospital is not yet known
  • New Mexico will expand criteria of testing because we now have increased capacity to process tests and there has been evidence that testing asymptomatic patients can help stop the spread of COVID-19. The expansion will apply to the following
    • Asymptomatic people who are close household members to those who have tested positive already
    • Asymptomatic people who work in nursing homes
    • Asymptomatic people who work in congregate settings

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. —

Experts around the world are scrambling to find a cure for COVID-19, including doctors in New Mexico.

This week, doctors at the University of New Mexico Hospital launched their first two clinical trials of two different medicines to help treat patients fighting the coronavirus. Dr. Richard S. Larson, the executive vice chancellor and vice chancellor for research at the hospital said two COVID-19 positive patients were enrolled on Tuesday and would likely start taking doses of the drugs.

The population density in the state of New Mexico is 17 people per square mile (which is up. Last time I checked, this was 12 people per square mile.)

New York State has 421 people per square mile, New York City over 26,000. Geographical distance is a factor here, IMHO.

Fortunate now, and we enjoy it.

We Old Anglo say used to say "please go back to Texas, please " and now add "please go back to California, please...."

JMHO YMMV
