I was down this way about a week ago, when I was headed to Richfield. Traffic on 15 South was horrible, so I went around the west side of Utah lake via Redwood Road. Following that road will take you into a tiny town called Elberta. I turned East to connect back into 15 at Santaquin.

If you turn West on Hwy 6, you'll go through Eureka, Silver City, Jericho and Lynndyl and into Delta.

I have lived in Utah my entire life, and I grew up near many steep canyons. I have experience driving in some pretty awful snow and ice. My car, a newer Honda Civic, also has brand new all weather tires on it. It handles very well.

This was the first time I'd driven the West side of Utah lake, and I found myself nervous because I wasn't used to the twists and turns. Through the northern part of UT county, the road goes through a populated area, and switches from a 4 lane to 2 lane.

Being an experienced Utah driver, I wouldn't chance a road I didn't know in the winter, snow or not. JP could have easily taken (their house is between 5600 W and UT SR 111) by taking SR 111 to Bangerter via Herriman, then the Redwood turnoff, which will lead straight to Hwy 6. This is really the best route for avoiding the police. It is also very dark, so that if the boys were awake, they could not detect landmarks.

I imagine if he used this place to dump her, or kill her there, he would have to know it very well to navigate it at night and in the winter, or use a GPS device. He'd also have to fill up his gas tank somewhere (135 miles one way) considering the gas mileage of a van, especially once you get into rougher terrain. I imagine that is how the police know where to look - there's only so many places to fill up a gas tank on the loop of WVC-DELTA-ELY-WVC.

distances: 9 hrs 15 minutes. I didn't include Simpson Springs, but curious how much time could be added for a stop there. Also...could someone post a map of WHERE EXACTLY is Simpson Springs that he allegedly stopped? TIA

I have a map, but can't post it on this computer. It is near Dugway. If you add it into the loop, it adds around 3 hours, making it 12 hours and some change. That is assuming perfect conditions. I really think he's lying about SS, because Dugway is military, and he'd be taking a huge risk by going anywhere near it.

Makes one wonder what they found on ole Josh's computers. Must have been something interesting.

I think you have some great ideas here. I imagine a single young man with two boys with him in a minivan in the snow in the middle of the night is going to stand out at some of those small town gas stations where they don't typically get much traffic.

Definitely. Most gas stations have credit card or debit readers at the pumps, but in towns as small as these little places, they're still less common. So, even if he somehow managed to pay cash, someone will remember it, or their video will have him on it.

But truthfully, I can't imagine a gas station being open after midnight on a Sunday night/Monday morning, which would force him to use a debit/credit card and therefore leave a paper trail.

And as for me, I grew up a small town in UT, and everybody knows when an outsider blows through. So, after the sun came up, wherever he was, you bet someone remembers it. I've lived in the city for nearly a decade, so I tend to stand out when I visit home, or when I go to small towns....it can't be helped.

I don't know. Why would he drive all the way to Ely to dump evidence, would you think? If he put her body around Topaz Mountain, why not just leave everything there?

They took the computers from the house in WVC very early on. Whether they checked his or SP's employer's computer they used, IDK. (I hope!) What concerns me is Papa Powell and all in his household. They could have purchased new ones since SP's disappearance and the brother, MP, is no longer living there.

I'm also curious where all the investigative leads of late have come from, since LE is saying it's not from the searches in Ely or of the Powell's residence. Surely not from the searches in Dec of '09. During the Ely search, LE stated they were going on something they found in the original SWs AND a new piece of info they had gathered. Outside leads, like the posting of the woman from SP's FB page (sighting in Ely of JP) or from a possible leak in the Powell household? I can understand a secrecy order on anything having to do with the children, but can't understand the secrecy order and sealed files on everything surrounding Susan's case. Makes me hinky meter go up. IMO

Eureka's the little town you go through to get to the Sand Dunes, right? I took some Scouts down there this summer. The only gas station I saw looked like it was using old, old technology at the pumps. That whole town looks like it has just come out of a time capsule.

Yeah the dunes are 18 miles south of Eureka on Hwy6 and 34 miles north of Delta

I've found that most of the towns in central Utah are like going back in time.

I would think it could be a possibility, with all of them living there, one could easily stumble upon evidence or overhear something...but I am not sure I have faith in anyone(besides from the distant sister, cant remember her name) in that family would come forward if it meant one of their own going down.

Personally, I almost never throw out a hard drive. I still have 8 GB hard drives that I pulled out of computers in the mid-90's (back then: "How could ANYONE use up EIGHT GIGABYTES?"). I can't imagine what kind of history you could put together on me if you came and took every one of those hard drives. These people sound a little anal retentive (e.g. keeping Susan's underwear in a locked cabinet). It wouldn't surprise me if their computers contained an absolute treasure trove of information.

Updated artcle/video.

Family, friends hopeful police getting closer cracking Susan Powell case

????

Kiirsi Hellewell has hope that West Valley City Police are on to something in Delta while they search for her friend Susan Cox Powell.

...then

Hellewell says she is not holding out much hope for what may come of the latest search, but it does give her renewed confidence in police that they have not let up on their investigation, and their desire to get to the bottom of what happened to Susan.

I'm a professional geek, and my ultimate goal is computer forensics. And you're right, I can imagine those hard drives would be quite the story.

The only real way to get rid of information, is to drill multiple holes through the actual harddrive. But, even then, WVCPD can contact his internet provider for search history...which I imagine they did in one of their first warrants, along with his email account(s).

I know, I am so confused. It's a roller coaster! First it's hope, then slim chance, then confidence...oi!

I'm thinking dad and son has been moving the body/bones around a few times.

OMG, I have so very much hope that they will find Susan soon! I too would love for the Cox family to not only get closure, but the ultimate chance of having their grandchilren at their side. Then the children would know what a wonderful mother brought them into this world.

"Police have encouraged citizens to report any tips which may be connected to Susan Powell’s disappearance. On Wednesday, Tony Abbott, of Delta, and his father drove to the scene of the search to tell investigators about some unusual activity he saw along a road.

After speaking with police, Abbott declined to give specifics of his information to a reporter. But he said he has long been aware of the Susan Powell case and it wasn’t until this week he decided the tip might be important.

"I hadn’t seen [police searching] in the area before, particularly this part of the country," Abbott said."
