Hi I'm new here. And want to change my user name to something different. Can I please do that? Thanks. You see I'm an author who uses the name as a pen name.

Hi I read a couple posts that asked the moderator if they should go to the basement. What is the basement?

It’s not really literally labeled the “basement.” It’s in the member’s only section. Sometimes mods will put a thread in the “parking lot” for various reasons. There is the parking lot and the jury room. The jury room is for anything off topic and we can start threads there.

I reported your post and asked a mod to help you change your name, if it’s possible.

I like your name too @Bxerk, but I understand why you want to change it.

Where do I find these rooms?

Hi. Can someone please direct me to guidance on what's considered on-topic here and what isn't. I have read The Rules but I'm still none the wiser on one question in particular. Is this place only for discussion of missing persons cases (e.g. the Constance Marten and Mark Gordon case which started off as such), or does it also cover other criminal cases that have been widely reported?

Thanks in advance!

Websleuths is very victim friendly. The rules sections spells out how to post and gives guidelines to help understand sources that are fine to use.

As Tricia our WS "Captain" says: DONT BE A JERK!

Note if you are expressing just an opinion to please make sure to say MOO (my opinion only) or link to a MSM (mainstream media) source to show something factual about the case. Feel free to ask questions on a thread, many posters will be happy to keep you up to speed.

I highly recommend that you follow the treads your interested in and then you get notified of new posts on your threads.

Missing persons is one forum.....

Thanks.

Are criminal cases on-topic if they were covered earlier this decade in the media but haven't yet been mentioned here?

Definitely! Do you have a specific one in mind? Sometimes it’s hard to search for a specific topic or case and you’ll accidentally create a duplicate thread, but that’s OK because you can use the report feature to ask them to be merged together.

Go to upper right and search the name of your case to be sure it wasn't posted on WS.

Othram has partnered with WS and they solve very old cases using DNA. There is no time limit for a missing person and this can be posted in the missing person's forum.

There is no statute of limitations on murders and other violent crimes. Cold cases from years ago can be added in the appropriate forum.

Off topic is when posters start discussing subjects that veer off from the original case.

I am excited to see the name and information you may have for your crime case. If so, we can see about getting a thread started in the correct forum.

I posted helpful links for you but am now checking in with you. Do you still have any questions about getting started? Any specific cases or topics you are interested in?

I will help you get started if you are still unsure. I follow alot of cases and can show you how to follow and post on various cases if you still have concerns getting started.

When I click on WATCHED THREADS, all the threads (cases, topics) I am following will come up. I get ALERTS letting me know someone replied to my own post or posted information on a thread I am watching.

You can send other posters direct messages and join private messages group discussions. Alot is offered on WS so please ask any questions if you need help.

Hi everyone,

there is something about true crime that got us hooked. Curiosity about who or why or even when. Wanting to know that they have been punished or at least uncovered. That all those crimes and missing persons cases get solved.
i follow different true crime podcasts and once in a while, I get so curious about what's more to know about a case, a person of interest or even a criminal, a missing person or a victim.
I'm sure that when I get the navigation in my fingers, I'm going to spend a lot of time here.

Hello everyone!
I became aware of Websleuths a few years ago between the documentaries, like Killing Season, and the work of Josh Zeman and Rachel Mills-- to the Cecil Hotel doc on Netflix. I registered a while ago, but participating online like in person social activities have been hard for me-- numerous contributing traumas and mental health issues have kept me from doing so..
However, I've found ways to circumvent that and begin participating here, and on social media more of late.
I've commented on posts here and there, found a number of eye opening events that have occurred in my area here on WS.
I am very glad to have this thread and learn more of the how to function and read here on WS.
Thank you everyone who has assisted here, sharing information and getting after those who have committed crimes--but also those who are Missing and helping families with all involved with those cases.
I look forward to participating here more, getting to know everyone and contributing as best I am able.

~~Anthony
