Why would the NZ government pay the family's expenses? The government is not at fault for Grace's murder.

I just wondered if New Zealand has a victim’s of crime fund like exists in some U.S states. Can you imagine the distress caused if your loved one was murdered abroad and you couldn’t afford to attend the trial?

I am not seeing any Lotto comment.....?

It’s obviously been removed as there definitely was a quote on her playing the lotto.

That's what it looks like to me too. He had groomed the other woman for 6 months and planned to do something to her on Dec 1. When she had other plans, he picked another victim.

I thought this, too. Or maybe he was so peed off at being stood up he took it out on the next available female.

A cause of death would be really useful.

"He'd talked about her moving to Australia with him if things worked out."
Grace Millane case: I was supposed to meet the man who is charged with killing the backpacker

That's just bizarre, since they hadn't even met yet.

Something was very off if this guy was really having that kind of intense online relationship, and yet they were finding it impossible to just make an appointment and meet each other.

However, who knows what he was doing in real life, maybe he was having regular tinder encounters and just stringing this particularly cagey woman along.

It must be a standard courtesy extended to families? Colorado paid for all Shanann Watto family's expenses since they were from N.C.

What a horrible comment to make considering what happened to poor Grace.
I get the sense that woman spends a lot of time in fantasy, what with her imaginary boyfriend and the angels.

Grace Millane should have been safe here.

Instead she was killed - her body dumped in bush just metres from a rural road.

Emotions high as nation grieves for Grace Millane

It’s going to be interesting to see if anyone is prosecuted for breaking the court order in NZ by posting the accused’s name on social media etc.

This isn't sitting right with me, does the NZ PM apologise to all parents of murdered children or only those from overseas, any and all murders are abhorent wherever the victim comes from.

My thoughts are will all parents who have suffered this unimaginable horror

To be fair, this is the first incident of its type to have occurred under Jacinda's leadership.

Jacinda is a very caring, warm hearted woman who truly cares about people, so it's no surprise to me at all that she spoke out.

The fact is, Grace came to our beautiful country on what is a rite of passage for so many, and there is widespread opinion that we, as New Zealanders, let her down. I think people would've been more disappointed if Jacinda hadn't said anything.

The name suppression order is making me furious in all honesty.

On one of yesterday's NZ TV news items - showing footage from within the courtroom where the judge was talking - the reporter said that a large contingent of media, including from the UK, was present. Whomever it was that relayed the name to the UK press to then publish (after hearing the judge explicitly say this), needs to be prosecuted and fired in my view.

Are cameras allowed in NZ courts?

There are a couple of organisations here that could help out if help was needed*, but I don't think it is in this case, as Grace's family clearly have their own means. The reporter on TV (NZ news) last night said that the two family members here were being taken care of by police; I don't know what that care extends to (if it includes accommodation, etc., or is in more of a support capacity).

* The two I'm referring to are the Sensible Sentencing Trust, and Victim Support. In this day and age, however, with technology being what it is I imagine Skype would be preferred over flying out here and attending proceedings in person.

I have seen it mentioned several times on social media that NZ should fund the return of Grace's body to the UK; it is my personal opinion that the NZ Government should not fund this - not when we had one of our own nationals dying in a Bali hospital recently who our Government would not step in and help to bring her back home. They could have sent an airforce jet to pick her up, but they wouldn't consider it ... and she died over there. Grace's family appears to have the means to take her back home, but if they were to ask for donations from the public I'm sure people would be happy to contribute.

Are cameras allowed in NZ courts?

Only by media - pre-approval is required (but won't necessarily be granted):

Specific permission is required to film, or take photographs or make sound recordings in court. This must be sought in advance from a judge through the registrar at the court where a case is being heard:

Filming, recording or taking photographs in court | The District Court of New Zealand

If approval is given - depending on the case, sometimes the accused's face will be blurred; other times it won't.

Yes we can see the Daily Mail Post. However we (people in NZ) are not allowed to name him on social media or in the press or display images of him. Quite surprised the Daily Mail are doing so.

Me too. IMO it shows a lack of respect for NZ courts.

Not just in the Daily Mail but I've seen his name published in a number of other different British newspapers including smaller local papers as well as in an American site...

Does he not comprehend that New Zealand Law holds no value outside of New Zealand?

So it’s perfectly legal for the rest of the world to share his name
. Just don’t be stupid and do it in New Zealand even on Social media as I’m sure you can be charged.

With all due respect, I disagree.

Don't do it, full stop. Don't get caught commenting on articles mentioning his name; don't get caught mentioning his name to people in emails or on messenger ... NZ law enforcement does take this very seriously and won't hesitate to prosecute. A relatively well known NZ blogger found this out the hard way.

Think about it - clearly work is going on behind the scenes to wipe the articles that did disclose his identity, as well as to remove trace of his comment from Grace's FB page.

NZ is not like America where you can find out a lot of information about people, including inmates, with a few clicks of the mouse. Our privacy laws here are very strict.
