Would that time-frame the police are interested in (Monday morning) be reflective of the time he took to drive from Auckland to Taupo?
I don't think so. They were asking for sightings in West Auckland proper.

She was found off Waitakere Ranges Scenic Drive which is 39 minutes? west of central Auckland. From there it is 3 hours 51 minutes south to Taupo. I don't think they have said what day the red Toyota was left in Taupo.

I don't see how it could be premeditated- who would take a victim to a casino- famous for eyes in the sky and facial recognition software? Plus he had to rent a car- doesn't sound like forward planning in my own opinion.

If it was accidental- say drugs involved- you call an ambulance- you don't cold heartedly plan a cover up.

So what does that leave?
Exactly. That's why I think there was violence, a deadly level of violence, done to her so he had to try to dump the body. LE found some evidence in his room and in the car?

I did the same when I was 24. I met hundreds of others along my route doing the same. We should be free to travel and not fear being murdered. Life is for living and exploring. She could have befallen the same fate in Essex. IMO.

She was seen on video at Sky City around 7:15 Saturday night. And at 9:41 at City Life Hotel a couple hours later.

ETA I too thought about her being drugged. If she went with him to the hotel, it might not have been so willingly after all, but I don’t know how long the so-called date rape drug would need to take effect if that’s the case .

Thanks. I was a bit confused about the Thursday reporting, but it makes more sense that both sightings were on Saturday night.

My understanding is that the pink bracelet she was wearing was for a draw to win money, so it was believed that she intended to return to Sky City.

Going on a round the world trip is not something that has likely chances of being murdered. She was in Auckland, not the outback. She could have just as easily been in her hometown going on a blind date.

I know thousands of people who have travelled the world, myself included, and it's a life-changing experience which does teach you a lot of amazing lessons but also forces you to get a bit more streetwise. You do need to be savvy and I have heard of some nightmare stories where people have been silly and luckily nothing happened, but going to a bar in the middle of a city isn't one of them. She went out and met the wrong person, it could happen to any of us anywhere. Backpacking solo isn't part of the issue here. Just my opinion of course.

She was 22 years old. She traveled with a group in Peru, and went to New Zealand alone. She was not hiking alone in unknown territory when she was murdered. Many people her age do the same thing - there's nothing strange about travelling to New Zealand and going out to a club in the evening.

I agree with this. I cannot wait for this 26 year old to be revealed. She would not spend time with some lowlife. I think he will be attractive, educated, has some money, young urban professional or trust funder. One article stated that he is a "NZ man". I think she met someone who seemed wonderful on the outside, and he is a monster on the inside. NZ seems to have a manslaughter option, but LE has charged the highest form murder.

ETA link: I found the reference to "NZ man" in the DailyMail article. DM and other media are also repeating now that he was a "Tinder date".

Also, the timeline is confusing to me. My assumption is that she was killed sometime Sat night or early Sun morning, yet he didn't rent the car until midday Sunday? I can only deduce that her deceased body was in his apartment that long??? Based on some of the press info, I have a strong suspicion he dismembered her body.

Just curious - what type of evidence could have been found in the perp's apartment that would cause LE to announce a few days ago that she was murdered when they had no confession and no body?

I woke up this morning thinking of poor Grace. I also had the horrible thought that this guy is another Brendt Christensen, and the apartment evidence showed that.
I agree that this guy presented himself as charming, personable and attractive.....but had a very dark side.

Sadly i think you may be correct. Quite often when a suitcase is mentioned in a crime it usually means a body has been stuffed in there and quite often it has been dismembered. This is truly sickening and my heart goes out to Grace and all her family and friends.

I think possibly they found her remains and informally identified her, before they officially announced it. Even though there would have be a strong suspicion from forensic analysis of blood and other fluids (some are only released by a body during or after death), plus video of him purchasing and removing a heavy suitcase(s), I think most police forces would hold off from making an official announcement, while they actively searched for a body.
