I question why I want to know his name. I hope that knowing his name and learning more about his personal history will give clues as to why he did this.

What do we know about him without knowing his name? He was living in the hotel, he's 26 years old, there's no job associated with him.

Did he see Grace as a financial target?

My best guess is that he is probably rich himself. That would explain why he can afford to live in a hotel without the need to work.

A spoilt little rich boy who thinks he can do whatever he likes with impunity, and the court is enabling him by allowing him to remain anonymous.

Could he be related to a public figure perhaps?

This case reminds me of the British banker I think it was in Hong Kong who was high on drugs and held a woman in his apartment for 2 days before killing her and stuffing her in a suitcase. May have even been two women he killed, I can't remember now.

ETA this case British banker Rurik Jutting fails to overturn double murder conviction in Hong Kong

That's an interesting thought. Grace would have likely felt comfortable with someone who seemed to come from a privileged background.

I wonder if anyone has noticed an unemployed 26 year old missing from the social scene in the last couple of days.

Unemployed and living near a Casino - maybe he's a bit like Joran van der Sloot who imagined that he was a professional gambler.

Or it may be that he is working in Auckland with an accommodation allowance.

Perhaps, but the omission of any mention of work in his description is something that much of the press has pointed out.

Unless it is a huge corporation and they are wanting any mention of them suppressed.

i live locally and a reporter has posted a pic of him in court on his personal facebook page then removed it. its slightly blurred and hes standing in the dock with a policeman. even though hes listed as a nzer he definitely looks like hes from another country.

Perhaps the UK press are allowed to report the name, because they are not under the jurisdiction of the New Zealand courts.

How can someone look like they are from another country? Did he have another country's flag on his t shirt or something?

Yeah, it's not great though. Nothing wrong with respecting another country's laws. I hope they're barred from future hearings.

I think its standard practice. Many times when the UK courts have had an injunction on the UK press, I go to the online NZ and Australian press to read the details. Admittedly this is usually celeb stories rather than crime, but the law involved is similar.

They should be ashamed of themselves, using this murder to further whatever their agenda is.

We also need to be careful about taking the Daily Mail info as fact. They are known for reporting false info, I guess for shock value.

'We're not a safe country': Sophie Elliott's father on Grace Millane murder

The father of a Dunedin woman killed in 2008 has spoken out about the murder of British tourist Grace Millane, saying he can relate to her family's grief.

Gill Elliott, father of Sophie Elliott, told RadioLIVE on Monday he feels "so sad for Grace's family, because I know what they're going through".

The 26-year-old New Zealand man accused of killing 22-year-old Ms Millane was granted name suppression on Monday, with the victim's father and uncle present in the Auckland District Court, having flown in from England.
