What is the chance that North Conway does not want to make a big deal out of this case, because of tourism? I'm guessing there are many people in the area who have a lot of influence (business owners?) who do not want to worry about scaring off tourists and losing money because they think there is a crazed abductor/possible murderer driving around. I do not think they would like the case all over the media, help find Abigail because someone abducted her, we have no idea who did it, etc.

From what I've seen, there's no chance of that at all. I've read that Settlers' Green isn't allowing posters/pamphlets to be posted, but I think that's a rule coming from their corporate headquarters. Lots of the local businesses in the town have Abby posters up.

If the people of conway believe her to be a runaway or to have taken off with a familiar person, then they aren't concerned. If they believed there was a serial killer or someone trying to abduct numerous kids, I'm sure they'd be paranoid. Their perception is their reality, whether it's right or wrong.

I don't think so. Everyone seems to have a devil may care attitude, which is strange from the outside looking in. Parents are still letting children openly post their lives on the internet. And I know children are typically more resilient than adults, but they seem neither concerned for their own safety nor all that concerned about the loss of what they claim was a very close friend (some referred to her as a sister). It has all the appearance of no one making that large a deal out of any of this, so I'm if there is a lack of "big deal" being made it must be something in the water up there because no one seems all that concerned. We had a young boy disappear when I was a teen and we all lost our bikes, we started locking doors even during the day, and God forbid if your parents didn't know where you were at every moment of the day and night. Not to mention, we children were all nervous and having difficulty being away from our parents, school felt unsafe, adults became people to fear and we even stopped going to the bathroom alone at school. If I were to guess, based on the town's reaction I would say they all think she ran away and perhaps she wasn't well liked because it doesn't appear she's all that badly missed. Now that's JMO, and I don't mean to cast any aspersions on the community because it does appear they've been very supportive of her mother, but the entire thing feels off.

But couldn't the lack of concern by locals be because of the lack of urgency by the media/LE? If LE was still holding daily press conferences, if they were saying Abigail was abducted, would everyone be more worried? Like you said, people might be convincing themselves Abigail ran away.

I've visited conway numerous times. It's a lovely area and I don't consider it backwoods at all. Sure, you've got lots of outdoor sports, hunting, shooting, etc. But that doesn't make it "hick". And NH ranks in the top 10 most educated states.

I don't know what to think.

She didn't meet someone online, they'd have that info.

She didn't have an accident on the trail...it's not an area where she would have fallen off a cliffside.

I also don't think it's someone she met in person and decided to run away with...there would have been texts or emails.

She has to have gotten into a car where there appears to be no trace....

absolutely agree. this community has gone above, beyond, sideways, backward and forward to keep her name out there. i've never seen anything like it.

that said, IMO it is one of their own that caused the disappearance of abigail hernandez. they're not afraid, per se, because they know who it is, and they know why. they're keeping their lids as tight as LE because they want the guilty party to come forward.

I agree that folks have a idea of who they believe the perp is. But HOW would LE get 2000 people to keep their mouths shut. There is no way they could keep the entire community quiet.

What you are describing is a cross section of todays society. Many people are and want to be in denial about it, but face it, this isn't the 80's anymore (I bet you thought I'd say 60's didn't you?). Todays teens; latchkey kids, and kids who don't spend time with their parents as much as in the past, don't eat at the table with family, etc., aren't as "tied" to their parents as we may have been (myself excepted, which is one reason why I can understand this). They are much more independent, and more "mature" (cosmopolitan) than most of us were. They want to be independent, and in many ways, they are more "equipped" (not to be confused with "ready") than our generations were. They're smarter, for one thing. For the most part, they don't have the fears that we had, and they sort of live by a "herd mentality", meaning they tend to lean on each other more. Their world is completely different than ours was and they are different also, as are todays parents. I remember when this phenomenon first started to be recognized; Readers Digest had an article about it, long ago. People say teens are rebellious, but what they really are is trying to be as independent as possible, and todays society makes that much easier than it was for us. I was outside the norm for my time; wild as a hawk as a teen and no one ever told me what to do, never. I grew up hard and fast, and paid a high price for it. Had a lot of fun though :wink:

But who knows...every LE deals with missing persons in their own way and mostly, not very well, IMO. Find the person, worry about evidence later...jmo.

I don't think the reality of what is in their community has penetrated yet. I don't think they get what a lot of people living in major cities understand. I go with what I previously said its a little back woods. It doesn't mean the people aren't nice. New Hampshire was a Union State ...Never seen so many Confederate flags lol

Proof is the operative word. The LE deal with facts, emotionless facts, and they may have their gut instincts but they have to go where the facts lead them and it sounds like the facts are few.

I've never heard of Dundee Mountain Road, so I just looked on a map, and it doesn't look like those 2 roads are near each other, or connect. Dundee Mountain Road looks like it's in Center Conway and off to the southeast of Hurricane Mountain Road. But I don't live in Conway; I only visit people who do, so perhaps a local will correct me on this if need be?

I looked on google and it appears that they do go in to one another about 7.5 miles up. Unless I have the wrong road up...yeah it would be great if a local could verify

Proof is the operative word. The LE deal with facts, emotionless facts, and they may have their gut instincts but they have to go where the facts lead them and it sounds like the facts are few.

Still, I think word would have leaked out if LE was even talking to, or interviewing anyone, it always does. And LE also operates on local gossip, at least to get things moving. So if a name was coming up often, LE could bring the person in for questioning, or try to, and that is when word usually leaks. And nothing like this seems to be happening. JMO

I still think you're making assumptions about a town and people you know nothing about, which serves no useful purpose at all. Just because a town only has a couple thousand year-round residents doesn't mean they never leave their town; North Conway is a busy resort town that many very successful and educated people move to, buy businesses in, or buy second homes in so that they can get away from cities and their stresses and problems. That doesn't make those people backward or naïve. The vast majority of people you'll see on any given day in North Conway are visitors or part-time residents from out-of-state or other countries, and that's because it's a resort town where lots of people go to vacation and/or shop.

I don't know what you mean about Confederate flags. As I said, most people you'll see there aren't actually from there. Maybe there are lots of Southerners who appreciate good foliage or hiking trails, and all are welcome

Personally, I feel that the fact that there are so many people who are "just passing through" North Conway on any given day is one reason why it's been so hard to find answers about Abby. If anyone did witness what happened to her, and if she was abducted, there's a good chance that witness was from another state or country, and doesn't even realize that someone was being abducted.

Don't know about that. Did you follow the Mickey Shunick case out of Lafayette, LA. It was months before she was found, only because her killer was finally found. If he had not been found, I don't think she would have been found.

Yes, well, Mickey's murderer intentionally bumped her bicycle with his truck, threw her bicycle in the truck-bed and abducted her. There was nothing accidental about it. She fought tooth and nail for her survival, just like I hope Abby is doing.

I don't post much but just wanted to say that I flew from VT to GA last Tuesday and found myself looking for her in the airports. I have looked for posters of her too and am sad to see none.
Today we were at Barnes and Noble and a man was watching us. I thought maybe because my four yr old grandson was giving his 14 yr old sister a hard time but it was kinf of creepy. Later we were in the children's section and here was there again watching us. I told my daughter and her sister in law because I found it creepy. The sister in law had noticed it too. We told the 14yr old what was going on and went to find my son in law. The guy was still watching us. I had told the 14 yr old about Abby because she to likes the Beatles and looks a lot like Abby, I have been follow Abby from the beginning and have been so worried.
