And if she is with a threat and hasn't moved from the area the letter came from....perp sees their location on national news and panics...not good.

They have a damn post mark which shows where the letter was sent from. They want the public to keep their eyes open. But,, they refuse to tell what area she may have been in???

Authorities hope Friday’s announcement in the case will generate new leads and garner national attention.

Maybe LE now does think although she may have left on on her own and she is out of state (perhaps because of the post-marked and/or maybe being trafficked)? This has been a strange case from the beginning.

So: Why release this now?
Was it about to be leaked?

My opinion is that the information was leaked, inadvertently. If I remember correctly, it was a news agency in Maine that first reported it and then it spread like wildfire. They quoted a "source" in LE, could be anyone even a dispatcher who leaked the info. Then I believe they immediately went in to damage control mode, called a pc for the following morning and spent the night figuring out how to handle it. The worst part is that many in ZH's community thought she had withheld evidence, so they had to address that. They also had to address the runaway theory, i.e. why spend so much manpower for a runaway and why should the community continue to support a child who left of her own accord, etc.
Here's the thing that bothers me on a "find the child at all means" level: there are over 9 million teenage girls in the USA right now. Out of those 9 million, about half are asian and/or african american. So that leaves 4.5 million teenage girls. Say that again, 4.5MILLION teenage girls. There has been nothing said about AH that in any way indentifies her or makes her stand out from any of those 4.5million other teenage girls. We know she had long brown hair, hair that might very well now be short and red. And she's certainly not wearing the same clothes she took off in 2 months ago. Now they have a postmark on a letter and they won't release where? I don't feel that the public is being given the information they need so they can help, if you want public help we need more to go on than that she's somewhere and she's a teenage girl with long brown hair. Personally, I'm tired of endless press conf's where no information is given so the public can help, and I'm particularly peeved to sit through 20 mins of back patting. They can do all the back patting they want once this child is home safe, but for right now if you want the public help and all the eyes out here then there's going to have be some information released.

Did they say it took one month? My sense was that they just chose to release info about te letter to the public now, for whatever reason, but knew who wrote it some time ago.

Gitana, you're right. I misunderstood that part of the press conference.

Right on Mom. Enough of this pussyfooting around. People can say oh well gee it might hinder the investigation. Ya, right! The ones hindering the investigation are the very ones heading it. We want your help but we aren't going to make it easy for you.

Well, Bessie that is your opinion and your welcome to it. But like you, I am here to give mine also.

I also found it weird that they told Abby to reach out to her mother, sister or law enforcement. Are they saying do not reach out to your dad?

So how would releasing the location be helpful? Would it be enough information? Or is the public entitled to more?

Releasing the location could stir up peoples memories if she were seen there and with whom. But ya what good would that do?

And,, as far as more information goes the more the better. Hows that??

Releasing the location could stir up peoples memories if she were seen there and with whom. But ya what good would that do?

pretty crazy that someone would argue that knowing the location the letter was sent would not be helpful to the public trying to assist in this case.

really weird that someone would argue that knowing, at least in a vague sense, the contents of the letter would not be helpful to people trying to find this girl.

how much is this investigation costing? who is paying for it?

So how would releasing the location be helpful? Would it be enough information? Or is the public entitled to more?

It would give a general area to keep eyes peeled. Fact is, I've seen people holding a picture of someone who walks right by them and they miss it, even if the only alteration in the person's appearance is their clothing.
And then who this person is. Does she like anime? That's a whole culture of people to look for her. Does she have a lisp? A tattoo? If she were a criminal and they wanted to find her they'd release more information, and that's how criminals get found. What about her makes her any different or stand out from the 4.5 million other teenage girls? Brown hair...I'm not a brain when it comes to hiding out but the first thing I'd expect is a haircut and a change in hair color. So really all the public has to go on is where she isn't, 86 village way in north conway, nh.
I think every press conf is carefully constructed to get someone to talk, but they aren't talking and in the meantime the clock is ticking.

I am just jumping on Abigail's thread to get myself updated...

Such an interesting piece of news!

Abigail sent a letter to her mom...

Dated - 10-22-13...(4 days after Abigail's disappearance)
Postmarked - 10-23-13
Received by her mom -11-6-13

-- Per authorities, letter is believed to be written by Abigail... "Authentic"

I am not sure what to make of this at the moment...:waitasec:

but... It does give my heart a little encouragement that Abigail is alive somewhere... :please:

I don't agree with the word hindering, I think they're working one angle and I don't believe it's as productive as the angle of public help. I agree with not releasing the content of the letter, I don't even care what was written, who it was addressed to, or even when it was sent. The important thing for me, jill public, is the postmark. If I live in that area I'll keep an eye out. I'm less likely to notice a teenager who fits her description if I don't believe she's in my area, especially since appearances can so easily be changed.
But no, I don't think they are hindering the investigation but it does seem more like psychological games and politicking rather than enlisting the help of the public. I have a friend in MO who would love to help, but she's got nothing to go on. I have friends and family all across the nation and they would love to help, but there's no information. So here we sit.

Well, IMO, if that is ALL we needed to know, and ALL we needed to do, then WHY isn't Abby home? Because we've been doing that for months and it has NOT resulted in finding Abby! :seeya:

I was initially heartened at first too, until I realized if the letter is authentic and it was written on 10/22 all we know is that she was alive up to that date. I'm holding out hope, but the flame is flickering and the candle is melting down.

I am not sure that the dating and receipt date of the letter warrants too much questioning. It was sent to a PO box that the family did not check daily. There is really nothing more to it than that. Postmarked oct 23rd. Found in infrequently checked PO box on Nov. 6th. I don't see anything suspicious in regard to her mom or dad and how often they picked up mail or anything.

They refused to say where the letter was postmarked so as to not give info to someone who might send a fake letter and try to mislead LE. That is entirely reasonable and sensible IMO
They may have already had to deal with false leads.

They could have given a vague answer.....like within the state, or out of state without giving the city or the state.

I don't know. I'm just frustrated with the little bits and pieces, and crumbs thrown our way, and do not understand this investigation at all. Just baffled. Going back to my corner! :banghead:
