I think we all need to remember that when we hear about the kinds of horrendous things someone has done, our first reaction is to think, "How could people who knew this person have no idea how evil they were?" But time and time again, we discover that people didn't know. Whether that's because the odd behavior didn't set off any red flags, or because people chose to ignore those red flags because it didn't fit into the narrative they wanted, we can't say. But it is often the case that serial killers are very good at hiding their true selves from the rest of the world. The woman who knew him in CA when he still had "Lisa" believed his stories about a wife he loved who had died/been murdered. I would like to believe that Denise had no clue how evil BE was. And since Websleuths is a victim-friendly site, and at this point we think Denise is a missing person who is also a victim of this monster, I will continue to believe that she had no clue. I am also thankful that her daughter survived and, in fact, has thrived in a life that includes a loving husband and children. As far as we know, she is the only victim who has been so fortunate. I wish her much peace and love. She deserves it.
