GUILTY NH - Camden Hughes, 6, suffocated, Hampton, 14 May 2011 #2

(BBM)
Does anyone else find it odd that she was extremely religious but yet, hardly ever went to church and just dropped her son off??

If she was so religious...why would she think she'd be going to heaven after what she did? Apparently she doesn't remember "Thou shalt not kill". I think she's going to end up somewhere a lot warmer, if you know what I mean.

Also...does anyone understand why this is second degree murder and not first?

ITA, the same place that Ms. Anthony will be going when she leaves this earth. This woman is no different - they both left their beautiful babies on the side of the road. The difference is that Camden was found before decomposition and wildlife took a toll on his precious little body. RIP Camden and may justice be done on this earth!

MOO ~

Yes, we love SD! And having all my family in ME, CT, MA and RI, I know you all had a horrific winter and now all this rain and my son (in law school back east)(we chat about cases all the time) says they have not seen sun since the sometime last week. :banghead:

Ok I have a question, Cam's name 'Pierce Hughes'; has there been any info about Cam's dad?

Somewhere upthread a poster said Hughes was JM's maiden name, IIRC. Don't know why she wouldn't have reverted to it after he was born also. The several years before when she was arrested and using drugs so she may not have been raising IM herself.

JM's mother also has the name McCrery b/c she is or was married to the father of JM's ex-husband.

I wonder if Camden Maine had some meaning to her. I also wonder if she was planning a murder/suicide, then why would she leave him anywhere? Wouldn't she have wanted him with her? I don't think she was planning to take her own life, because of that. Interesting about giving the toys away prior to the trip too. I mean we've all given toys away so that's not strange, but just that it happened before the trip like that makes you wonder if they were most of his toys or what. I'm guessing LE will know certain things by her actions. Just sad sad sad....Maybe her life was getting so hard that she knew she was going to go back to drugs and didn't want him to have a life where his Mom was like that even if she had given him to someone else....I think sometimes these Mom's can love children so much that they do this so they don't suffer in a strange way. That's just my guess, but I've thought about that when I hear about some of these murder/suicides. Just so sad that the older brother has this to deal with his whole life.

BBM.

Stephanie67, I feel especially bad for the brother! He can't have had an easy childhood. And now this. At least he seems to have a very supportive father and paternal grandfather. They were flying to Virginia to be with him.

If she was yelling at Camden, it would seem that he was killed in passion, probably because of something he did that was 'wrong' e.g. ate something she was saving, ruined something valuable to her, etc. She only had $25???? How could she drive that massive truck with the price of gas right now for 30 hours? JMO

Oh ok yes, because I did see JM's FB page and saw who I thought was her mom with the same last name thinking M was JM's maiden name. Ok interesting about her mom marrying her ex's father. So Hughes is JM's maiden name. Yes I did see JM had a drug and prostituion history before Cam was born.

The mother of Ian's (Juli's older son) roommate in the Navy posted on Tonya's (one of Juli's FB friends) FB wall saying he (Ian) was going to Maine to claim the body, face his mother, and travel with Camden back to Texas. She is asking people to support Ian in any way they can.

So very sad. I just can't imagine what this young man is feeling. :(

Camden was a very smart and bright little boy.

He was in Kindergarten and in the Gifted Children’s program.

One teacher said a while ago that he could read at the second grade level.

One of his favorite things to do was to take his books and copy them down to practice his letters.

He liked to kick a football and soccer ball in the back yard.

Camden and I share the same birthday on March 15th and my birthday will never be the same again.

When asked if his client came to New England on a murder-suicide mission, Murphy answered, “Yes.”

I don't know if I agree with her attorney releasing details of his conversation with his client, but I do agree with him on the murder-suicide mission.

In the article, Murphy also states he doesn't believe cough syrup was involved in Camden's death.

OMG this is unbelievable. If this attorney, ( who is no doubt n appointed public defender who wants no part of this case) said this he stands to be brought up before the board of bar overseers and tossed off this case. His repeating anything said to him by his client in public is so against the laws and ethics I'm surprised there's not a press conference right now announcing he's been tossed.

Also where is he an attorney? She had to have a Mass attorney for her extradition hearing and a NH attorney for arraignment unless one us licensed by both states.

No, this isn't right. She may be guilty but she deserves fair representation under the law.

He is MA. Believe at the NH arraignment she was asked if she needed a public defender and she said yes.

Do you think it will get to the point of a trial?

The cough syrup thing bothers me since it seems like she tried to cover up her direct involvement in her son's death. The fact that she was yelling at her child (supposedly) while at the motel is very damaging. She's admitted to killing her son and could plead guilty and not go to trial. JMO

Even as her son's image was plastered across TV and computer screens nationwide while authorities worked to identify the little boy found dead along a dirt road in Maine, his mother dutifully called his Texas school daily to report his absence.

The last day the boy attended school in Texas was Friday, May 6.

The next Monday, his mother called to report that he was absent because he was ill, and she continued to call this week, saying he was still sick, said Pat Lamb, director of security for the Irving Independent School District.

You know I am going to take her "anger" as being totally frustrated with her life. It does appear that prior to that she was a loving mother to Cam. She has a ton of videos of him. He looked very happy and healthy. He was a "gifted" child in school reading at a second grade level at 6yo. So very smart. I think she was snapping in NH … I think this trek to NE was her path to destruction and she was at her wits end and probably starving and Cam was probably asking her for something to eat and she was panicking. JMHO.

Yes, and we are hearing and reading that she also called her ex, Robert Miller on Tuesday, and her Mother said she called her on Tues as well but the Mom was not home to take the call. Miller said she acted absolutely normal throughout the call stating only he noticed she had a bad cold.

I wonder if the reason she was in Chelmsford after 5 days instead of returning to texas is because she had no money to buy gas for the vehicle?? She went to the hospital for physical reasons not mental so could it be that she had no money to buy food for those 5 days? Or longer? Was the child not eating because they had no money?
I wonder how, or if, her plan had changed because she ran out of money.
If the last day he was at school was may 6th were they traveling since then? Was she planning something since then? Did anyone see them since then?

I feel so bad for the older brother, I can't imagine what he must be going through.

I was curious about that as well, Sleuthie_lu. I'll have to check that out.

You know, I will admit I do not understand depression and I do realize it is absolutely painful those that suffer with depression. It just blogs my mind in cases like this that JM would choose to end Cam's life instead of giving him to someone until she gets the help she needs. Her Mom (as it appears) is devastated, she will (I am sure) never understand (like us) why JM just did not give Cam to family and get herself checked into a hospital. Just so sad.

The problem with some mental disorders is they do not allow for the logic of thinking what might be the best thing to do...she may end up saying she was hearing voices (maybe she was) or had a break with reality (and maybe she did.) It's hard to know what happened here, as we would have to be able to see into her brain...

This letter from Cam's grandmother just broke my heart. There is just something about this case that tugs at me.

One of the things that is really bothering me tho is that people are 1) going out of their way to post nasty messages on JM's friends fb page and 2) why does the friend not make her page private. This reminds me of the Smith's and now they acted in the baby Gabe case.

Sorry for the mini rant but it really bothers me how some people are trying to be all me, me, me when this is really about a little boy who was murdered and his big brother having to claim his brothers body and then face the killer who turns out to be his own mother!!

My prayers are with little Camden and his big brother Ian.
